Hang on though, there is a WORLD of difference between monkey noises towards players of a different skin colour and calling someone who is quite obviously Greek and proudly Greek a Greek.

I don't know the circumstances but if people come off the pitch feeling a team had played dirtily (was there a Red card shown ?) and the team is commonly nicknamed after a nation (just what nations flag is that on the club badge in your signature Uncle Steve ?) and filled with players from that nation then isn't there a chance that it had nothing to do with race, more to do with the well established nickname of the team ?

If I walked off and said Dirty f**king Rovers after a game against Miramar that had been hard fought and physical would that be Racist against Rovers ?

Yeah but calling fellow greeks, a nickname is different. If a certain racial ethnicity was to call eachother by a certain name, it is acceptable, but if another outsider not from the culture called them the same nickname, it isnt acceptable.

I think the point really is where is the line drawn? Yes our club is nicknamed the greeks but at what point can we distinguish racial comments? We have been called dirty, sleazy, greasy greeks, do they constitute as rasist or ethnocentric?

I dont think this will ever be resolved because from what i see, slap some abusive comments before saying the greeks and its oh k.

My standpoint of the situation is, year in and year out we are labeled as dirty and abusive "greeks," and because that is our known nickname it constitutes a fair comment. Its unfair and not justifiable to a certain extent. We tiptoe the line of rasicm and get the book thrown at us everytime with no acceptions, but on the other hand here, its oh k because thats what they call themselves.

Bullsh*t.

By the way those views are my personal opinions and shouldnt be taken as the clubs collective understanding of the situaion.

Sleazy or greasy I'd consider offensive, even dirty if it was spat at someone of a Friday night down Courtney.  I it was said to someone in the crowd, it could easily be interpreted that way as well.

But, I think the point here is that in this situation it could easily be interpreted as a statement related to the match rather than to the ethnic background of a whole race.

Still, I'm not Greek so I can't judge how it is interpreted by those on the receiving end.

The Worst thing about mirmars equaliser was the fact that the referee was marching the boys back 10yds, which was fair enough because earlier in the first half raf had tried to take a quick free kick but was told to retake it as the referee had said that he always starts marching 10 yds unless a player calls for a quick free kick. therefore he had set a precedent in the first half which he should have stuck with, it shouldnt be one set of rules for one team then one set for another, then as the ref has his back turned to wiremu patrick woody has taken the ball to the side then passed it to an empty net. I have no problem with woodys decision, it was cheeky and the worst that would happen should have been a retake. when the ref was questioned by raf regarding the quick free kick he couldnt answer and when jamie oconnor had questioned him about him marching the boys back 10yds and talking to them (taking their attn away from the free kick) he froze and couldnt answer....

end of the day 2 points lost, and if the referees want the respect programme to work they are gonna have to be accountable for their decisions...because that is not a mistake he had the opportunity to over rule his decision but chose not to.

On another note, a comment was made by a miramar player following the game, about greeks...If this was an olympic player Yellow fever would have erupted but barely a mention on this occasion. lovely.

Straight up, down right lies here. Whats the point if were all just fabricating things?

And Brian Little said "The f**cken Greeks always self destruct" QUOTE! Very obviously referring to the team, not the people.

I agree that calling a greek a greek and a dutch a dutch is not racist but I find this comment hard to agree with when we (as a YF commuinity) decided that on this forum we needed to call them the "bubbles" rather than the "greeks"

Marist continued their barren run of form when playing in New Plymouth in the Central League as they crashed to a 3-2 loss to Team Taranaki yesterday.

The visitors took the lead with a well-worked goal in the 40th minute to David McCorkindale and they held that lead till halftime.

But a madcap 15-minute spell after halftime cost Marist as Team Taranaki banged home three goals and put the game out of reach for the Steve Green-coached side.

They managed to pull one back through Khair Jones with five minutes to go, but it was too little, too late.

Green was left wondering what might have been considering his side were 1-0 ahead at halftime.

"We were patchy," he said. "We weren't very good. They seemed to be sharper to the ball and half-a-yard faster.

"It was always going to be hard and we haven't got any points here [Taranaki] for three seasons. Taranaki seem to be our bogey team."

Winger Nathan Morath was a late withdrawal for Marist and they missed his pace on the flank.

Green said he was impressed with the work-rate of Ethan Dent up front too.

North End squandered a two-goal lead and allowed Red Sox to snatch a point from their 2-all draw in Western Premiership action on Saturday.

After goals from Dave Boyack and Matthew Bruhn, North End looked to have the points in the bag, but a five-minute lapse in concentration cost them.

Player-coach Dave Boyack said he was happy with his team's effort, but the outcome wasn't the desired one.

"We should've scored a few more goals and a couple of defensive lapses cost us," he said.

"We are pretty happy with the way we are playing, but it's not the result we wanted."

Takaro International underlined their quality with a 4-1 win over Wanganui Athletic at Wembley Park in Wanganui.

It continued a good run for Takaro, which beat Palmerston North Boys' High School 2-0 last week.

Calvin Horne was the star for Takaro netting two goals.

Coach Sam Put was happy with a dominant four-goal, first-half performance which set up the win.

"I said to the boys I wanted four goals in the first half and then the job would be done," he said.

"I'm very happy because last year we weren't being challenged."

Their clash with North End in two weeks is shaping up as a pivotal game for both teams' chances at the league title.

Feilding lost 5-3 to Wanganui City in a high-scoring affair.

Massey Women got their season on track with a 2-0 win over Upper Hutt.

Playing away from home, Massey started the game a lot stronger than last week and the win was set up from great performances in the heart of the midfield by Kelsey Rutuene and Leah Gallie.

Massey Coach Richard Dalby said he was happy with how his team responded after last week's disappointing loss.

"The girls started a lot stronger," he said. "They were better this week; they weren't asleep for the first-half."

The goal-scorers were Rhonda Bridges, who continued her fine form from last week, while Jess Dent scored the other.

Put your fastest guy down the flanks to attack their fullbacks, they are slow to turn and also wander, especially the big guy on the right, and it's easy to get behind them. Sounds like the Mar did that successfully but we weren't able to. In defence put your best defender on Soroman, man mark him all day. He make runs in between the fullbacks and central defense and has plenty of speed. Stick to him like glue, he is their only weapon. The other player to watch is the blond midfielder who can play a bit. Hope that helps.

In all it is racist if the way in which it was said was intended to be a cultural put down and could be inferred by the person hearing it as same.  The words said are secondary.  I recall a Somali being offended when being called "a muppet" when he missed timed a kick. Not racist as place / time and intent not there.  In this instance the player did not understand what it meant.  It was a put down but not racist. However change that with stronger tone and colour or race work then you could be racist.

So when I see some of the Olympic boys on the town and call them "Cheeky Greeks" and they rib me about being Scottish thats racist? The fact I know quite a few of them and they know me makes everything in jest. Conversely, if I'd seen them in town and said "i'm not goin in there, not if those f*ckin greeks are in there arent they" - then THAT is racism. Uncool. Uncalled for.

People need to learn some communication skills and not take everything literally I think - its all about the intent behind the comment is it not?

Racism is racism and it has NO place in football (Inter Striker Balotelli has been the victim of a lot of abuse lately, it aint right man) but a few jibes between people who have some kind of bond/commonality?? different ball game innit??

Signing off,

Im over this crap anyway. Ive expressed how i felt and those of you who also expressed their opinions i have gladly taken to and understood but as far as i see it, Olympic are under the microscope every second of everyday and when even a tinge of possibility that another club or person has said something to offend olympic, everyone jumps on their side of the fence and looks at the why nots instead of the why's and is quick to criticize us and take the word of anyone else over ours.

Anyway, Upcoming fixtures, Miramar Wests, looks to be a cracker, or will it fizzle out and produce a 0 0 scoreline. With the way miramar are conceding and ben feld scoring, i put wests to take this one 2-0.uncle steve2009-04-23 21:30:51

Defend Wests longball and stand them up in the tackles in midfield and they won't be able to score past you.
I'd pick a draw.. and no red cards. Olympic to pick their game up.

Well I picked Wests to draw, but I thought they were playing Olympic. Whoops.
Wests 2 - 2 Miramar

Marist 2 - Petone 4
Pretty open game, stroll for Petone. Marist goalkeeper pulling off some really good saves. Marist second goal was a nice through ball, first goal looked like an own goal. Don't think Bannetyne was tested at all.

West somehow pulled off a 2-2 draw.  Included a last minute penalty after Simon Shone bobsleded a west striker.  Miramar up 2-0 and should have killed the game off with a couple of good chances.

Petone first goal was in fact an own goal with Davey Lane scoring one for each team.
