He is just one player - who when you look at it probably spent more time suspended than playing.  If these players are paid, which I don't doubt, it would more than likely be on a appearance fee structure to prevent suspensions and injuries chewing up all the money.  But at that end of the day I am just a club member and as far as that stuff goes, I don't really care.

Ye ye, just facts there feverish, not sugar coating any of it.

And if anything, if the season ended for us now, we've done a great job. Especially if you go back and have a squiz on where about 90% of the predictions for our season were 5th and below with no silverware in sight.

AND i understand, if we lose, i will get stick, BIG TIME, but its part of the game i guess.

And just curious, what am i CLAIMING feverish?

just suprised to come on here to basically see you banging on about how great the season is. - like you'd won something already.  If you dont beat Wests it wont be great at all. Third is the least you would have been aiming for pre-season. Just wait till that moment is all I say. I havent actually seen Wests play this year - but I would say they are favoured.

So you don't think we've done well as a club to have gone UNDEFEATED in the central league, drawing twice against miramar, haven beaten wests already and made it to the Chatham Cup semi-final? There is nothing wrong with highlighting what we have done so far this season.

Ive made it obvious that it is no where near finished, we probably have the biggest games ahead of us and i look forward to them with great excitement. Im not getting ahead of myself, just replying to some stooge that is trying to take out his frustration of today's loss against us.

Personally, I just think you saw an opportunity to bag us and make me look arrogant.

im not bagging you. you could have the blinder season to end all blinder seasons. Just dont want to see you getting ahead of yourself cos I think you are quite humble normally.

Yup, point taken.

Just hard to hide this excitement.

Seconds get promoted to chaps premier and firsts have a decent chance to ACTUALLY bring something back this year.

After seasons of dusting cobwebs off our cabinets the hope of bringing anything back just gets me head over heels.

Wests have to be worried coming off two defeats one at the hands of Olympic. I went and watched the West/Olympic game and I thought that Olympic were by far the better side. Matt must be in panic mode surely?

I don't think panic is one of Matt Calcott's emotions.

Grumpy, sarcastic, terse.  These are all MC standards.  Don't think he'll panic though, he's been around the block a few times and might even have a trick or two left up his sleeve.

Incredible stamina. No shame. Yellow Fever.

I am sure he would have thought 4 weeks ago as did all the write ups in the paper that he had it in the bag. Its great to see the CL come down to a final game I remember last year Miramar had it won with about 4 weeks to go and it made a joke of the last games. Will be a great game I am sure if uncle steve and his Olympic boys come to play it should be like a CL final should be decided.

Obvious Olympic have there semi fianl this weekend what are Wests up to as I assume they didnt play over the weekend as such will they be ready for such a battle? Will both teams line ups be as per the last game? I have heard that Wests have lost a few players overseas as per Miramar and that Olympic may have a few card issues? Uncle Steve you seem to know what is happening with Olympic how many of them are in card trouble surely Lewis will be close to sitting out another game?
Permalink Permalink

I dont think we are in trouble with cards, some suspensions have just been sat, so we should be fine. I dont think any of the boyz will be even thinking about this Wests game due to this week semi final chatham cup fixture. Hope to see a large crowd, I already know a huge number of greeks will be there that dont usually turn up to games, so thats a good sign (for olympic).

I bet you Wests will be there watching........ and I am sure they are thinking all about it as its all they have left. They have some talented players thats for sure but seem to be very one dimensional in how they play. In watching the game against Olympic they seemed to be out of ideas as to what to do. Their game plan seems to be if it doesnt work they have no plan b so just keep trying and hoping. Olympic seem to be have players who can change and at times it appeared they did things that there coachs was telling them not to do which could cause problems as it allowed wests to get back into the game. To be fair I havent managed to watch a lot of either team this year but that was one game I did enjoy and I am looking forward to the replay....

TSMA "Fair comments.  There is next year.  Our boys acheived probably more than expected.  Beating Miramar away. Ending up mid table. Not bad for our 1st year in central league as we know it now."
That is absolute crap. The amount of money dished out for players and the quality of some of them that came into the squad finishing mid-table is rubbish. Yes it was your first year but take for example Gold Coast in the A-League they have spent so much money bringing in quality, if they finish mid table that would be crap. So Wairarapa have had a poor season sorry.

Olympic boys no matter what happens it's been a very good season for you. Didn't think you would be up there after we beat you in the Hilton Petone haha. Feels pretty sweet to be the only team to beat you this year even though it was in extra time. None the less even if you lost your next 2 games I think it would be above pre-season expectations. But obviously if you lost the next two games you would be very disappointed.

Wests must be feeling a little nervous as they have jacked up a friendly on Saturday against Tawa. Matt Calcott wanting to play against Tawa (never thought I would see that day). Jokes aside though, makes sense though, otherwise would be two weeks off without a game.

Who to win Central league? Caught in the middle of who I would rather win. Maybe Olympic, for another club to be champions.

do you know how much Wairarapa spend or are you just going on rumour and speculation? bit of a stretch to compare Wairarapa to the Gold Coast

Interesting comments considering that the A-league has ony just started.  Gold Coast have plenty of games to play.  If they do end up mid table, they would probably be disappointed, but their squad had been together BEFORE the season started.  Our new players (Cowen, Roydhouse, Banks, Gillespie) only came in half way through the season.  And look at the difference that made.  Very proud of the fact that we ended up mid table, considering our full squad was formed mid season.

Obvioulsy expectation of next year is high if the current team sticks together.  Which I think from a club perspective, winning the league would not be too much to ask.

Personally i thought when we played Wests, we looked dangerous from every part of the field. I think the key for me winning is our midfield to be on top of their game and georgie to run at players more.
There's not enough of this in the CL and when defenders come up against him he either draws the foul or skins past them. I think him and Raf are key in that midfield and with Mikey and Jimmy supporting, if they're all on their game there's no stopping us.

As for suspensions, everyone has served them and 1 or 2 players seem to be on 3 & 4 yellows from my memory, if anything we might be missing one player for the west game due to reasons unknown to me.

Cowan was there from the start so not sure what you mean by adding him to the list Gillespie came in because Sasha packed a wobblie, Yes to Roydhouse and Banks good players who will make a difference to any team but the dollars spent for results gained interesting....

I'm pretty sure Cowan was not there at the start.  True about Nathu but Gillespie made a difference (by staying on the pitch for a start).  Does anyone know the actual facts regarding these player payments.  Sick of everything revolving around our "paid Players'.  I.m sure we are not the only club that pays players in some form or another.  Just because we have a sponsor who reaches into his pocket does not make our whole club bad.  Where would the Phoenix be without Terry!!!!!!!

Silly comment.  There is a salary cap so the Phoenix spent exactly the same amount as all of the other sides.

Wairarapa on the other hand did not, which really is the point isn't it?

And yes, to some extent we are all going on rumours.  But Football in Wellington is a pretty small place and it's pretty obvious that Adam Cowan, Campbell Banks and Richard Gillespie aren't playing for Wairarapa because they love wineries and the serenity

Appalling standard of refereeing, says Spierling

The standard of refereeing in Central League football matches this season has been described as "absolutely appalling".

Greytown identity Alistair Spierling, a former referee and with more than 40 years involvement in the sport, was moved to make that comment after watching Wairarapa United lose 2-1 to Olympic at Hullena Park, Masterton on Sunday.

Up against an Olympic side who had gone through their Central League campaign undefeated and needing to beat Wairarapa United to keep their title hopes alive, the home side produced some of their best football of the season to lead 1-0 at the halftime break.

But any chance of a shock victory disappeared when they had two players sent from the field in the second half, firstly James Oxtoby and then Waisake Sabatu, leaving them playing the last 20 minutes with just the nine men.

Even then, however, they were unlucky not to draw with one of Olympic's two goals coming from a penalty awarded after the referee had ruled for hand ball, a decision which not only mystified the Wairarapa United players but Olympic players as well.

Spierling, whose son Aaron is part of the Wairarapa United squad, was one of many in the large crowd at a loss to explain why so many of the rulings made in the second half, in particular, went against the home side.

< name=INVadSpace1 Border=0 width=0 onload=":try { .getElementById('adSpace1').insertAdjacentElement('beforeEnd', .s['INVadSpace1']..getElementById('adDiv')) } catch(aamErr) { }" height=0></>

"Honestly, there was no sense to it," he said. " It wasn't as if they (Wairarapa United) were any worse or better than Olympic when it came to infringing, it was just most of the decisions seemed to go the one way. It's impossible to fathom that sort of thing."

Making it worse for Spierling was it was by no means the first time this season that Wairarapa United had suffered in that manner.

"I hate to say it but, frankly, the refereeing in Central League has been absolutely appalling," he said "They (Wairarapa United) can be physical but no more than any of the other sides yet they keep getting caned by the referees, and you have to wonder why.

"In fact, you have to wonder whether some people actually want us playing at that level, and if they don't then they should tell us and be done with it."

Spierling believes much of the blame for referees all too often being the centre of attention lies at the hands of administrators who had taken discretion out of the refereeing process.

He recalls when he refereed those with the whistle were encouraged to keep play moving when minor offences occurred and to have a "quiet word" to the offender while on the run.

Now it was a case of referees blowing up for every little indiscretion and continually halting play while they "talked down" to the guilty party.

"It's frustrating for players and spectators and it's no wonder everybody gets a bit uptight," he said.

"You have to treat adults like adults, simple as that."

We had that ref against LH, he made his mark by sending off Reggie for an elbow which only he saw, no one else at ther ground including the LH guy who took the alleged elbow saw anything untoward. He then turned up in our rooms, had a scoff, and left without a thank you or goodbye. Arrogant sod, the food wasn't that bad. CF gave Reggie a one match ban for violent conduct (usually an auto 2 match ban isn't it?)  which tells me even they didn't believe the refs version. But he's been the only real bad ref, the others have been very good to middling.

ROFL!!!!

These are the same adults that whinge about every single decision, pack a giant sad if booked, and all bar stand over a ref if they disagree with their decision

The reason the refs have been so much more vocal is because people are unable to control themselves on teh footy field.

Sure they will be treated like adults, if they acted like adults instead of petulent teenagers (no offence to any nice teenagers playing Central League intended)

On the refereeing point, I do feel that things got out of hand when the referees began being marked on how good a game they had.  Ultimately, what they should be marked on is their contribution to a good game of football, sounds similar but it isn't actually the ssame thing

Interviewing a fan on the sidelines who has a son in the team about the standard of refereeing isn't exactly an objective comment - I'd say that isnt in the course at journalism school
