careful all, 99% of what has been written about us is untrue. However Welly U have to compete in the real world and part of that is bringing better players in than last year. Rest assured though that the new largesse is not grand and is carefully allocated. And it is nowhere near as grand as what I know for certain is available and being offered at other clubs even down at premier level. Just go talk to the players to confirm this, you all know who they are now.

Why dont hey spend their money on developing juniors so they dont have to buy in players

I make two points:

1. The money spent on players is THE major topic of discussion at the start of every winter season.  Most commonly people are either pointing out how wrong it is, or defending is (a la rightstr above) as "no worse that what everyone else is doing".

2. Capital Football have always been silent on the issue.  Note that this is NOT a dig at the current adminsitration, because the previous one did nothing either.  I just wonder why nobody is prepared to stand up and say: "hey, this is an amateur league ffs, stop paying players!"

Wouldn't it be nice if, prior to the season kicking off, we were talking about who might actually win it, rather than which player is getting paid the most where and how ridiculous that is?

The Greeks have spent the money they saved on missing out on Cowan on a new sign for their clubrooms

United set for biggest season ever
19.02.2009
By Gary Caffell

The current economic recession may have provided Wairarapa United with an extra incentive to produce the goods in the 2009 central league soccer competition.

It will be Wairarapa United's first season playing at that level and by finishing in the first two they could have the opportunity to represent New Zealand in the Oceania qualifying round of the world club championships.

That scenario will become a reality if the New Zealand Football Association decides, as seems likely, to replace their current national franchise league, which is being scrapped for financial reasons, with a competition comprising the top two teams in the northern , central and southern regions.

"That's the talk at the moment, and what a carrot it would be for the central league teams if it happens ," said Wairarapa United coach Phil Keinzley who is "very happy" with the 14-man squad and four standby players he has named for their central league programme.

The most notable new name in that squad is the current Manawatu national league skipper Adam Gordon although considerable interest will also be taken in the form of Chris Kirkham, who has been promoted from Masterton Athletic's local league side.

Gordon has been playing at striker for Manawatu but is capable of filling practically any position on the field and Keinzley believes his versatility will be a huge plus. "It's nice to have players like him who you can put anywhere and know they will do a decent job," he said.

Kirkham is seen by Keinzley as the ideal replacement for promising youngster Anton Ross who is now at Otago University.Like Ross, Kirkham is a natural left footer with a good turn of speed.

Gordon is one of four players in the Wairarapa United squad who have been playing at national league level this season, the others being Matt Borren (Manawatu), James Oxtoby (Hyawkie's Bay) and Seule Soromon (Hawke's Bay).Skipper Pita Rabo would almost certainly have joined them but for a shoulder injury suffered late last season. He will lead the team again in 2009.

The full Wairarapa United central league squad is: Matt Borren, Carl Shailer, Waisake Sabutu, James Oxtoby, Adam Cowan, Andy Robertson, Sakeo Valevou, Aaron Spierling, Kote Maeno, Miriek Tvaroh, Pita Rabo, Paul Gregory, Chris Kirkam, Seule Soromon. Standby: Matt Steele, Joel Macklin, Niki Keinsley, Guiseppe Cugliari.

How can you get Waisake "The Fridge" Sabutu's name right but not Cowan's?!!

The best bit is that Cowan's name is correct in the team list and this supposed superstar Adam Gordon's name doesn't appear.

Up in the air currently.

I suggest that they have mis-understood the people involved in the NZFC and many clubs if they do go down this path.

From what I'm hearing it's probably 50% likely, but may not happen for another 12 months.  Seeing as most of the problems with this seasons NZFC can be laid at the feet of NZ Football, then it would be a bit rich for them to close it down due to their incompetence.

Scrapping the NZFC would be such a disaster...those involved need to go back to why the NZFC was formed in the first place and have a think.  It's not perfect and needs work, but the first step should be to turn control over to the clubs.  Rather than fighting NZF they can fight each other!  And maybe, maybe we might get a little lateral thinking about how to grow the league because NZF have really done very little.

Anyway, sounds like an exciting central league is shaping up, what chance that Wairarapa win the thing at first pop?

The Central League.

With Olympics 50th year ahead of them will they finally get there hands on the trophy, or will Miramar be looking to snatch another one for their prizedshelf, will Lower Hutt step up to the plate and take one home, or will Wests get back on their horse and carve their names into that trophy yet again.

Only time will tell bob.

since you started this thread - how about telling us about developments at bubble central

Developments you say...

How about i even go as far to bullet point them.
- Good overall squad
- Depth
- More garlic promised in the mititeas at the clubrooms.

Hopefully with those things and the fact its our 50th, im wishing the boys will FINALLY step up their game and bring us a trophy back.

Every year i hype us up and unfortunatlly we havent been preforming up to this hype even though our abilities speak otherwise. As long as we can stay strong as a club, remove all those petty arguments and problems that weve encountered in previous seasons, keep our heads down and play as a team then i feel that olympic have a good chance to bring some silverware back for 09.
