'Clear the air' meeting works for Wairarapa
16.04.2008
By Gary Caffell

A team meeting on Monday evening organised to "clear the air" is expected to have positive results for Wairarapa United as they continue their participation in Capital Soccer's premier division competition.

The disappointing 4-1 loss to Tawa at Queen Elizabeth Park oval on Sunday was the catalyst to the meeting at which the possible defection of at least two of their Fijian players to another premier division club, Island Bay, was a major discussion point.

Coach Phil Keinzley said the first he had heard of that rumour was after the Tawa loss and that while no transfers had yet been signed or even asked for inquiries had indicated there was some truth in it.

Apparently two of the Fijian imports had been approached with the offer to play for Island Bay and going into Sunday's match they were still in the throes of considering a move.

While making no excuses for his team's loss because of the excellence of their opposition Keinzley reckons there was "every chance" his team's performance was adversely affected by the "uncertainty and confusion" in the minds of the players concerned.

"I think it's fair to say they weren't quite as focused as they should have been and you can understand why," he said.

Keinzley was at pains, however, to stress that the vast majority of players "imported" by Wairarapa United from the Pacific Islands had served them with distinction over many years with two of the squad, Pita Rabo and Sakeo Valevou, now in their fourth season with the club. "They have been huge ambassadors for their country, both on and off the field of play," he said of that duo.

Keinzley said the upshot of Monday night's meeting was that all of the players present committed themselves to playing for Wairarapa United in 2008 although a question still remained over the future of fullback Petero Dauniseka, who did not attend

"There was a strong feeling that the Tawa loss has to be put behind us and that everyone in the squad has to be working on the same wave length," Keinzley said.

"What happened on Sunday is a hiccup, no more than that"

A statement which makes good sense when you consider that defeat was the first suffered by Wairarapa United in 2008, a season where they have already beaten three Central L eague sides on the way to winning the Hilton Petone pre-season tournament and thumped Kapiti Coast 4-0 in their only other premier division match.

Keinzley is, however, expecting Miramar to pose every bit the challenge Tawa did when Wairarapa United plays their third premier division fixture at Miramar on Saturday.

He said they, like Tawa, are pretty much a "no-frills" team which concentrates on doing the basics well and who have the tactical nous to take advantage of any weaknesses in the Wairarapa United game plan.

"They are a very good side but it's a good chance for us to show what we made of, to bounce back from last weekend with a good win," he said.

Meanwhile, Keinzley sees the decision of Rathkeale College to play their first XI in the junior premier league in Wellington on Saturday mornings this season as a "very positive" move, not only for Rathkeale but for Wairarapa soccer in general.

Keinzley said it would expose the side to a higher level of soccer on a regular basis and therefore have the players better equipped to perform well on the representative scene and for Wairarapa United, if they elected to play for them too

"It's a big step but the benefits for the sport should be considerable," he said.

I am absolutely gobsmacked at all this. IB must really be throwing some money around, for what real purpose one can only guess. I thought the Central League did some dumb things money wise but this takes the biscuit. And to think I saw all those Wairarapa PI guys standing around at the Hilton Petone prize giving only 3 weeks ago pledging their love to Phil.

Upon watching the game,  nothing seemed to be out of place.  Seemed like everyone had a bad day.  Then after discussions with a few people, the focus was on what did Wairarapa do differently than last week.  By memory, Tawa's equallising goal came from a corner, in which a tall centre back for WU, was missing somewhere. No challenge.  Goal.

Tawa's second came from a delivery of a ball from the mid feild up to the newly substituted striker, who had the skill, pace and finishing to leave the tall centre back for WU standing watching (basically).

Tawa's third came from a mis controlled ball through to Mike Rameakas who finished clinically.  Not sure whether this mistake was the tall centre back or James Oxtoby.

Not sure how the 4th goal came about.

Overall the tall centre back played himself out of the game rather than into it. The free kicks, he did take, were along the ground, and he went missing when needed.

Full credit to James at the back.  He had stormer.  But then you realise, he had to make up for whatever the tall centre back wasn't doing, and that was playing for the team he is contracted to.  Head in clouds maybe.

It is a shame, if it has come down to money.  These guys are good to watch.  But then again if your heart is not in it, then no amount of money will change that.

People have to realise (Winston Peters does), that most of the Pacific Island players have been brought into the Wairarapa United club as employees.  This means when the transfers between the Pacific Island Clubs and Wairarapa United were drawn up, they specifically applied to being employed by WU football, thus applications for work Visas state this.

I think this only applies to 3 of them, the others have NZ citizenship.

If the player breaches that employment contract with WU, then their NZ Visa dissapears with it.

If Island Bay are seriously looking at taking him, these things need to be sorted out, as he will play about 3 games for them and then have to leave the country.

Large price to pay for little amount of game time.

If Wairarapa is to be weakened (therefore out of contenton) than it would have been in Island Bays best interests for them (Wairarapa) to have beaten Tawa in the weekend I would have thought.

that gossip is gold!! it just surprises me how much  clubs are willing to pay for what?? the prestige of winning the league? what do they hope to get out of it?

may as well dig a hole in a field and bury it! its hardly an investment!

The thing that gets me is that why would island bay have paid or express interest in such a player now rather than cause the tormoil in 2 weeks when WU host Island Bay? Maybe they thought they could beat Tawa, and not Wairarapa?

IB already have a Fijian playing for them I've heard (he is ex Wai U). Perhaps he has tempted the other WU PI boys down to Wakefield. Who knows? If true, its the end of IB as a serious senior club for a few years. Money down the Wakefield drain, what a stupid stupid waste.

i think that article was including the IB guy in the mix (2 players mentioned) - even though he doesnt play for them any more.

I was going to ask a question about this....something about when the Fijian player at IB left them (I thought he had been playing in the midfield on Saturday against us?)....but then I got distracted by Mr T dancing.....

I heard that the Wairarapa United Coaching staff had to import specially made goal keeping gloves just to fit the 6th finger.  I am allowed to say this because I live in the Rappa.

hahaha yeah u'd have a shot......but i think my years of playing at a decent level would see me have enuf nouse and awareness to be parked on the bench with a heineken. next season nightz......the comeback is on!

so if TW didnt release their players.......Wests could even get relegated? I know thats highly unlikely but anything is possible

This year O league matches ran from 27th of October through to 2 April.

CL runs from 5th April through to 10 August (also usually finishes later due to CC game, weather etc).

and NZFC started on 5th November.

How long before of the start of NZFC season would players come together for training? 2 Months?

I would suspect that NZFC players would take a couple of months off after the final and then rejoin their CL teams in June/July.  Then once the CL has finished go back to their preseason for TW in late august.  Sound about right?

this weekend - Welly U v LH. A test for our lads and spiced up by the mouth watering clash between the two biggest goalkeeping egos around in CL. Who will win this one -Nik van Hattum or Dale Warburton?

if its an ego competition then NVH has it down pat! (luv ya bigman! ya ego is 2nd only to mine!)

In terms of sheer gk'ing ability i'd have my money with NVH also, ive known Dale in a football capacity since god knows when and he has certainly come a long way, good to see hes playing CL football n' all....but i think NVH is a better GK.

Truth be told ive not seen Dale for a few years, but i always remember him being quite short for a GK. In saying that hes a helluva shot stopper with an uncanny nack for pulling of miraculous saves when all seemed lost. Further to that he never really had a lot of talent in front of him and im pretty sure he'd have that at Wgtn Utd.

Should be a gooden but LH to win a tight, physical battle 2-1.

Your a hard man to please Barber.  I'll blame my parents genes for my lack of height

Actually Bobby Minshall claims on our website that I'm "probably only about 5 foot 6 inches tall, (even with his long studs in his boots)".

As long as I can touch the cross bar.  Isn't the prerequisite for being a GK?

If it's a question on who will shout at his team mates, likely to be sent off, or wear a pink shirt then it's got to be NVH.

True but most of them are against rubbish like Everton.
They also dont have to work a 40 hour week like our players.

Id cut nzfc back to two rounds + playoffs. lower costs, lift the level of footballing and marketing intensity.
ps - this is horrendously off topic!
