Well what a day...

Olympic started off very poorly, however despite Manurewas possession they rarely created any chances. Olympic began to create a few chances, in which Miky was able to score off..
Second half Olympic began to play some football in which they scored a second through a Jimmy freekick bottom corner. Should have finished off the game with a couple more, however the score ended 2 nil.

There were 2 bus loads of Manurewa supporters, so they deserve some credit I believe.

Olympic remain unbeaten and as for Miramar, well hard luk ay... Would have been nice to have a all Wellington final. Maby next year. Hopefully the final is in welly, but if its in Aucks, well, Road trip!

Outclassed? I think not.
That goal was not an "absolute beauty" it was MUCH BETTER than that. What a fantastic strike!!!!!!!

How many Miramar fans made it up there? Very very few is my guess.

Mohammed, on the left, I'm still in touch with. He's now living in Agadez, Niger. More focused on his animals now as tourism has dried up. Is active with a co-op promoting local goods, leather work and bijouterie, into Europe.

I was at the game today and really enjoyed the football in the rain. The highlight of the day for anybody that turned up there has to be Sam Matthews goal. The other highlight for me was the the aftermatch speech of John Cameron. He spoke an unbiased truth littered with humour, he seemed to be a real gentleman with a strong passion and understanding for the game. I think James Darbyshire played well and showed his class but let himself down a little by losing his rag at the crowed in the final third of the match ( that can be expected in this situation) Peter Halsted played well and got himself in some really good scoreing positions but muffed two or three real chances. Jesse Van Keekam for three Kings was poor and let the Mar have there way until he got dragged after about 25 mins. Louis Del Monte was class for Three Kings but its hard to look at any performance after seeing that goal by Sam Matthews.   What a good day, I think I want to boof John Cameron.

Matthews goal was the best i have seen in local football in this country. The timing and technique was just sublime and even the best of us in goal would have struggled to get a hand to that.

Man of the Match for me would of been either Del Monte who i thought was excellent or Walters who had a fine game in goal for TKU.

Looking forward to the final now.

Three for me, and two for them.

Yay for Three Kings!!! Instead of worrying about where and when the "all Wellington final" would be, shoud have been doing your homework on Three Kings. Who absolutely took it to Miramar in the second half!! And now the final is in Auckland!!

Nico, just wondering what the crowd in Akld was?

At a rough estimate, I'd estimate somewhere in the vicinity of 1500 on a pig of an afternoon weather-wise - those Wellington clubs must have booked a seat for Mother Nature on their flight north to help make them feel at home! :-))

One particular downpour, around the 2.30pm mark, was one of the heaviest I've encountered at a football match. Nobody escaped, including local MP, Phil Goff - a good football man, and the uncle of retired Football Ferns star Simone Carmichael (nee Ferrara).

Massive result for the TKU club, this. Club membership clocks in at around the 2000 mark, so if the bulk of them make it across to NHS for the final, and drag their family members along with them, add on the Greek supporters, and the decent-sized contingents Lynn-Avon and Claudelands will be bringing along for the women's final, and it should make for a pretty decent day out.

As for Sam Mathews' goal ... one of the all-time-great Chatham Cup strikes, no question. It's no disgrace to have your season ended by a goal as good as this one.

Cheers,

JR
PS  For mine, it's quite fitting that the final is set to be contested by the two teams in the country who still boast unbeaten league and cup records heading into September.

I thought James played really well, especially when he moved into left back. He tackled well and moved with the ball at ease. He was a genuine outlet at left back. I noticed him having a crack at someone in the temporarry stands more than once but was too far away to hear what he was saying.

Sam Matthews  what a stike, thats what dreams are made of arnt they??? we were right behind the goal the whole game. Miramar could have finished the game off in the first half really they had like 3 1 on 1's with the keeper. Greg was awesome in goal for tku i thought. Andre the centre back made a couple of cracking tackles as well. Del monte was great as usually. Does anyone know if nik robson will be back for final???What number is James Darbyshire???? The left back and no 7 for Miramar were pretty good i thought, even thou the no 7 dived terribly a couple of times.
My man of the match was Paul Marshall for pulling Jessie off after 25mins it was a massive call but the right call

ps The rain was terrible for the biggest game of the season.

I still have visions of it running through my head. Never before has the phrase 'Worth the admission price alone' been more appropriate.

Very disappointing.

Ref's told us any sort of smoke during and even after the game inside the park and they would suspend the game...bastards.

BUT all in all, amazing day, and one for me that went well into the late hours of the night.

AMAZING!

I was hoping for a fight! The game had a good edge until Olympic scored the second goal. Those Manurewa boys looked like they had eaten waaay to many pies.

With that wind and rain there was no chance of smoke going near the pitch... just make sure you did it downwind of the pitch.

On behalf of the Three Kings players and management, thanks to everyone who braved the rain and come to support the teams at Keith Hay Park yesterday.  1500-2000 was a very good turn out in those conditions and the players appreciated so many coming to watch.
John Cameron was very humble in defeat and gave a great after match speech, the Miramar boys were also very gracious and gave a great account of themselves.  It was a real cup tie and hopefully worth the $5 entry fee, even though Sammy's goal was probably worth that alone.  It was a great game and both teams in fairness had chances to win the game but in the end it was decided by a bit of magic.
We are looking forward to a great final with Olympic wherever it may be, as long as the locals come out and support the two teams.

Have to say, great to see 1500 crowds for both Cup semi's it would be a while since the Chatham Cup has generated that sort of interest and an excellent sign.  Also good to see people of every club supporting the local sides not just the family and friends of those playing.

Yep have to agree.

Lets just hope that the final is in Wellington (the home of football), a curtain raiser for the Phoenix would be great!

The last couple of years haven't had TV coverage.

Be good if they did, think of the 3 Kings at the 4 Kings gags we could make in promoting it.

Would have to be moved from the 20th then I would imagine.  Rugby test the night before and an early Phoenix game wouldn't work.

18:00 on a Sunday ?

Not sure that would grab the fans, or keep them in.  Also (I'm guessing) the stadium costs would probably increase if the lights are needed ?

Any word on when the decision will be made? I'm in Auckland on the 18th so if it's the 19th at NHS, I'll just stay an extra day and go (reluctantly) cheer for Olympic...

Indeed.  NHS have the hump with NZF over the November 14th game can't see them justifying sending the Chatham Cup final here.

As one of the small band of Miramar supporters at yesterdays game I'm still trying to get over it !
Was a good game in some difficult conditions - no pitch in the country would have coped with that downpour and it would have been interesting if it had continued as puddles were starting to form.Matthews goal was an unbelievable strike - the sort that either goes in the top corner or out for a throw in.Am amused by the comments that 3 kings outclassed Miramar. Relistically with some better finishing the game could have been out of reach for 3 Kings by half time .
two turning points were :
1. marshalls courage in subbing the Centre back after 25 minutes - he was getting roasted by Halstead and rowe.
2. Blatant penalty to Miramar after 1/2 an hour  when the GK took out Barron. Personally I think O'Leary bottled it as if he had given the penalty then he would have send the keeper off. However he did fail to give 3 Kings a penalty shortly after for a clumsy challenge by farrington. Think he evened things up there. Aside from that he had a generally good game as conditions were difficult.
Once 3 Kings equalised then there was plenty of action but Miramar squandered a number of chances and the ball would just not go in and 3 kings were dangerous on the counter attack.
John Camerons after match speech was initially not well received by a couple of idiots in the clubrooms but after they heard it all I think they realised it was dignified and honest

Still pretty surreal for me.

Having being involved with the club for 10 years now this is the closest to victory i've come and i do like the taste of it.

Hats off to the manurewa supporters and staff, and OBVIOUSLY to our boys who were involved with the running of the day. (especially the entrance music, got the blood flowing)

I felt we should of had at least another 2 quite easily, but scuffed the chances. I really think we have a great chance to bring home the cup, but dont want to jinx it yet.

Hopefully the whole of wellington football will get behind Olympic for the final as we try and bring the silverware back home for the first time...EVER!
