Last Saturday game between Cashmere Technical and Ferrymead Bays was also the 100th fixture for the Hurley Challenge Shield. Design for the Shield was based on the old Hurley Shield with former New Brighton player, Paul Bradshaw the craftman for trophy.

Shield was first introduced at the start of the 2007 season and played for betwen the Canterbury based sides in the MPL, with the holders having to put the shield on the line for every home league fixture, with the challenger needing a win to lift the shield.

As the top placed side Canterbury side in the MPL in 2006 - Ferrymead Bays (who won the league) were the first holders.

Of the 100 games the shield has been defended 79 times and changed hands on 21 occassions, with Burnside, Rangers and Universities never having lifted the shield. There have been 13 draws over the years with 360 goals having been scored in the 100 games with the holders scoring 256 of them.

The longest three tenures are held by Cashmere Technical 30 games, followed by 13 for Woolston Technical and then Ferrymead Bays with 7. There have been 8 occassions when the holders 'lost' the shield on their first defence.

Below is the table showing the stats for the Defender's and the Challenger's:

Hurley Challenge Shield - Defenders

Hopefully the predicted rain is not too bad and we get more than just the MPL played this weekend. English Park has been penciled for the MPL if grounds are out with games as above order kicking-off at Midday, 2pm, 4pm and 6pm.

Nomads getting more of the 2007 MPL winners back on the park tomorrow.

Next we will be back to Keith coaching them again, oh well maybe not then.

Maybe Wiily G could've saved the Dragons some coin and signed this player already with Nat League pedigree.

Too late for April fools isnt it Scottie?? Obviously Nomads through and through but seriously? Would Keith even be a step up from what you have?

While I prefer Keith to Mick I really feel the unsung guy is Charlie. His big band feel to Rock and Roll tracks has definitly helped make the Rolling Stones what they are today.

It was tongue in cheek re Keith. Nomads coach not going with another young lad that won't deliver on the pitch come game day.

That is a plus as imo he got shot of too many players with some guts and determination in them just not fancy dans.

As mentioned back to Keith's team of 2007 for proven players at this level.

Tech are paying $41 to beat Nomads 7-0 like the last 3 times they have won this year against them. I'm locking it in.

I wonder if the South Island league would make more sense with 6 from MPL and 2 from Southern. Nelson's result against Queenstown showed the MPL is the higher quality league.

Yup, good thinking. Will there be 6 CHCH teams keen on it? Remember you need to add in one more team (Selwyn) who will be MPL next year.

Hard to make a call on just one game, talking to a few down south and they are talking a 5 - 3 split for the make up. Sound like a good chance of a one round South Island League in 2018

Not only a matter of being keen, but meeting the proposed CY club licence criteria.

That's likely to place a few clubs out of contention.

Relegation will be a more dicey subject as well if the SI League takes up a full round. Only gives 14 games to decide who is down, often it's the crucial ties between the bottom two or three that determines it.

Providing all teams have all home games. Need to see clubs put the money up front at the end of this season if it's to be taken further.

Let's take Queenstown as a test case  four home games and four away.

So they play one game in Dunedin and three in Chch or two Chch and one in Nelson.

Costs for only 16  to travel with flights would need staying a night in Chch to get the cheaper flights and flight times.

Based on my figures with a night staying in a Baclpackers the 3 away legs not counting Dunedin could be done for under 10K.

So how about Mainland/Souther put some $amount that clubs would need to enter on the table quick smart.

With a staff of thousands I mean being paid 100$$$$K it's time for the talk to stop and action to be done.

South Island league. Don't discount Chch Utd putting their hand up for that and/or National league. Slava owns his home ground, has plans for mini boutique stadium and has invested in club infrastructure (coaches/junior players). He means business.

Current total is 22, one more than Michael White, with the 22 comprising of 7 on field 'oggies' and the other 15 from the 5 game were an ineligible player took the field.
