Welcome to University to the 2014 MPL - draw has them playing against the top four sides from this season in their first four outings..

First up away to nelson Suburbs, then home to Ferrymead Bays, away to Cashmere Technical before facing Western at University Oval.

Yes but will all their players (University) be here for the pre season games, with studies not under way until March. Openinf ground of MPL set down for 22nd March.

I hope University can survive their first season.

Do you have to be registered as a student at CU to be eligible to play for Uni? Or can other staff or other students play? Etc

Pre season should be compulsory I reckon. Why would you not wanna play against teams you will play in the MPL?

Very tough start for uni, but are thr any easy games in the mpl? Survival is the aim for them.

May as well add Stu Kelly he plays for whoever pays the most which is no problem so expect to see him at bays! Roberts I believe is back in UK so not expecting him to return. Barton to coastal and Ede Im guessing Halswell. CTFC coach will be under pressure to repeat the form of last year wouldn't be surprised if he stepped down at some stage through season. Id love to see nomads stay away from trouble this year

I heard form a mate in Selwyn Div 5 team, that the club are "very" hopeful of signing Ede along with several other players to form a strong bid for promotion. Wonder if the chequebook has come out at all

Awesome result for Pride to go up there and win vs Northern who were chasing 3rd title in succession. With national club Knockout Cup win as well, fair to day - for now at least - Chch is the powerhouse of women's football in nz; and nz are ranked top 20 and rising. What can the men learn from the women?

Chequebook wont be the drawcard. There isn't one. Was tried recently by mpl player but got turned down flat. What's the point in buying a title anyway? Concept lost on many but by minding its own business they seem to be drawing in players throughout age groups.  The term 'coaching not poaching' bandied around out there. Hard but refreshing approach. One of their lads that got overlooked by FTC off to Perth mid January for burnley training camp. Join the dots... What's the drawcard if it isn't money?  coaching perhaps?

Yes great result for the Pride to go up to Auckland and come from a goal down and win 4 - 2, so well done all  the players and management for all the hard work leading into the ASB Women's League and durinng the league in recent weeks.

Build the team, build the system of play, have faith and be patient? Remove the old guard, and start over again. Now. We have 4 years, as long as we don't arse about trying to keep all the ex 82 lot happy and make the calls now. The longer we wait, the less time we have.

Whooooa, hold your horses, one fortuitous victory and a solid win does not a summer make. Back it up with a couple of similar results in the next 2 years then ok I'm right with you. How many national reps do we currently have? Nowhere near as many as Auckland/Northern I bet. 

Maybe it's time for NZF to rethink their development strategy - Christchurch based training camps for National age group teams? We certainly seem to have coaches capable of improving players individually and as a team. Many of the girls in todays win and the Coastal cup triumph were losing finalists in the Cup 2 years ago and have made massive strides.

Correct. A good player should always look for a good coach, coincidentally they tend to perform better under a good coach as well. Which explains a bit of a conundrum in NZ football. When little Johnny's parents go looking for a team what's their basis for deciding who is a good coach? Invariably they tend to go for expat poms (accent being the voice of "authority"?), not sure why - maybe there is a presumption that because they came from the country that founded the game they all know what they are doing? Not a problem, they tend to be knowledgeable about the game and keen to share that knowledge, which is great given they get nothing out of it in return apart from the satisfaction of a job well done. The way I see it though is that they tend to go at it from a top down approach i.e. they see themselves as top of the coaching tree and don't upskill readily, they generally rely on their own lower level experience then limit anyone they work with in the game to that level of experience at best. They tend to be resistant to training for a higher qualification and can also pass that attitude onto local coaches in particular. Many of them end up in positions of influence where their entire focus is not on the development of the players at their disposal but winning the local league. I don't blame them - my perception may be wrong, open to discussion here - this situation has developed simply through the ineffective governance of the game at NZF Board level and a complete lack of coach education at local federation level. It's commonly called abdication of responsibility. For goodness sake it's the easiest way to develop players - put them in front of better resourced and educated coaches who have their own development pathway. As 10CC says make coaching the drawcard and every club in town can put their financial resources into player development supported by a federation hell bent on developing high caliber coaches who can go on to a career in the game. Dozens of them.

How much $$ is being thrown at the women's game in chch by those clubs that seem to be happy to do so for the men? I really dont have any idea so am asking. My guess would be little if any. Similarly, the clubs more succesfull with the women ( and becoming more importantly the older girls u18/pdl) are all serious about developing the women's game for the right reason - putting ( coaching) resouces into the women's game. Coastal has the pathway in place with Steve A laying the foundations then passing them on as they progress. Parklands doing a great job with their programme. Selwyn have appointed a women's coordinator  on their board and had a sucessfull first season in PDL this year with better to come in 2014. Rumour they have a deal brewing that will greatly assist their girls getting top quality coaching. Waimak similarly without the interference of $$ are doing more than ok thanks very much with their girls.
In summary, the girls/women seem to be coached by younger fresher dynamic coaches at forward thinking clubs without the $$ swaying players from club to club season on season. They seem to stay with or get attracted to clubs that provide the coaching. Without the $$ involved there seems to be loyalty to those clubs that look after them.
Agree with Ronaldo that men's game coached by some that think they are top of the tree and want to stay there by surrounding (buying) themselves players year on year. Little interest in self evaluation as to if they are actually coaching or want to be seen still wearing the jacket.
Plenty of retoric nonsense 'coaching'  language getting barked at players at MPL and Dragons level by coaches that might have been acceptable 20 years ago, but simply doesn't cut the mustard in modern times. 
Easy to see that how Shushy got confused/carried away from Local to national game, as it is a problem right throughout! 
Spend the $$ on coaching not on buying players, and the quality wil rise. Time for some reflection for clubs to decide which side of the fence they are on...

Yes it is interesting now you have directed my attention to it. With all the success in the Women's game, it is surprising considering no money is being thrown at them unlike the Men.  Why is it so different. Is this the pay gap that people talk about?

I have heard that in Auckland they do pay Women to play, under the table of course, lets hope that doesn't happen down here.

Why would Longo have played for Mainland this year?
I heard She got a job in CHCH and moved down permanently.

My comments regarding payment of players were directed to the local leagues, where it is supposed to be illegal however many clubs do it in the Men's sides. Women, none as far as I am aware.

So that is 8 of their champion team all leaving. Must have been a real unhappy environment. If that is what happens to the top team, what will happen at other clubs. Do you have to lose competitions to keep players? Dream on guys!!!
