So the rules are no pay at all, yet clubs are handing out $5K in fuel vouchers, is that how this is? Or am I reading it all wrong?

Hi Vim,

Is the Coastal pre-season tourny all go, if so when does it 'kick-off'. Cheers

Permalink Permalink

Of course it is, means football can go midweek before the season really kicks off.  Not sure on exact dates as yet, usually February tho.

goto capital football site and find NZF regulation 5 status of player
the rules are pretty open but do have certain criteria for payments and contracts hence fuel vouchers and appearance payments….

Most likely Linfield, although that's another guess too.

Would that cause issues with one of the usual pitches currently being 5 a side pitches?

Ordinary comparison fella. Man U revenue for the 2011-2012 season was 320 million pounds, it's not just about winning league for them (which of course they didn't even do that season).

That said your point is solid, everyone does like to be part of a winning team. I'm not close enough to any MPL sides or inside running of clubs to know what happens these days but back in my youth, when i was a tad fitter than i am these days, i was paid to play. The money all came out of corporate sponsorship (Shirt naming rights, ground advertising, match day programme adverts and plaques on club wall etc). The better the players you could attract, the more sponsorship you could generally get in to fund it. It all worked well but was very reliant on the generous nature of local businesses who probably didn't get that much return on investment in truth.
Players give up a lot of their time for their clubs (some moreso than others...), so personally i'm all in favour of them getting whatever rewards/benefits they can for their endeavours

But what if it's only two clubs in town that do it?  What if it's all done under the table so has no nobody knows anything about it financially (IRD, Working for familes etc)   What if players are poached from other clubs on the basis that they will get some $?

Does all this sound a fair system?

I fully agree it shouldn't be done under the table. Back in my day it was always done legally and tax was paid. I don't see what's wrong with clubs working to raise funds to pay players though. They should all be allowed to do it, the hardest working clubs will invariably come out on top and i'm ok with that. Playing poaching happens in every league throughout the world. Maybe some kind of "salary cap" to ensure thing don't get too silly would be needed though i'm not sure in a basically amateur league that's even necessary. There are always ways around it if you try hard enough anyway.

I don't think it's a sad but true point that people like to a part of a winning team. I ruddy well love it.

But there is a greater sense of satisfaction knowing that the team and club you support does it by the book, and the players are in your team cos they want to be there. Not that some are getting paid to be there, while the others in the team are thinking, "Why aren't I getting paid?" And the other teams in your club don't say "Why aren't I getting a new set of strip this year and we're paying thousands to a few players?"

Is that a good point?

Vim is this all gossip or can you tell me who from clubs get paid and what .

Permalink Permalink

I think it's common knowledge around town, and as far as I am aware it is only Bays and Tech that pay certain players. Normally just the national league players get looked after, however there may be others.

Don't be so naive Chelsea pensioner. Players in Chch and pretty much every other league with a reasonable population base are "paid" - not all players, not all clubs.; have been for years, are being paid and offered money today, and will be for the rest of my lifetime. Nothing inherently wrong with being paid for your time. The problem for Vim is that it he would like it above board and "official". NZF and the federations won't be inclined to follow that course of action though as nz doesn't have the spectator mass (and the corporate $ that follows any reasonable sized market) to justify a move to a professional footing. Also too many clubs went bust chasing national league glory 20-30 years ago. If you look at the history of leagues as they developed around the world one other thing is also required - the ability to take a gate - charge entry to a specific location to watch a game. That can only happen at grounds which can be made secure and are not publicly open fields. Only 2 of them in Chch - ASB and Garrick park, plus school grounds. I don think we will move from the current shamateur situation anytime soon.

The reason I ask is I play at fc in a masters team that Browny of tech used to play for. So I questioned him about the things on yellow fever , to see if they gossip or true .His response was they don't pay money but with boot vouchers and petrol vouchers for players being selected for utd . Which is a club incentive that is common knowledge. They also pay subs.

So is all a wee bit of green eyes stuff. or is my old mate telling me fibs.

So is $400/game petrol money?

Or what about the player who is on the staff at a company a club chairman owns? Or flats for free at someone's rental property? Or turns up every now and then at a junior coaching clinic to fulfill coaching gig - which might have been funded with grant money. Is that being "paid"? See there are ways and means as browny alludes to.
The point Vim makes is valid and I agree - it would be better for it to be open but I don't think that move to professional status canhappen for reasons previously outlined.

Who gets $400 a game?

Tech played about 35 games last year?Lot of coin

The point I'm getting at global is I've read a lot of quotes on this which is directed at certain clubs which seems false unless you can back that statement up. Mainland tried last year to get an expense figure in place but nzf wouldn't support it.

I was just wondering if this is a forum where it is genuine football people who care for the game and are in the game. Or people who just go on for a wind up.

Everyone gets into mainland , about rules and so on. The last 3 meetings I've been told that there's  a lot of people not saying much. Do you or Vim go and state ur strong opinions and knowledge of the going ons in the game

I haven't had a go at Mainland. i'm just stating what goes on - for some players in some clubs - here and everywhere. I'm not judging it.
Read the other regional or ASB franchise forums. The same discussion has been had/is being had in every region.
The people who have been on these forums for a while share a passion for the game; with every view under the sun being expressed; just as it should be.
If you are on staff at someone's workplace and having your rent paid and having a dabble in coaching and get free boots and petrol money, it's not hard to get to a $X,000 a season worth of "payments". Stu kelly describes himself as a professional football player and has played in numerous professional leagues around the world. You think he is in chch because he loves the MPL? It's only here or Oz that will pay him to play footy in the southern winter months.
It is NZF's ongoing decision not to go professional at this level (or even national club level) and there are extremely good reasons; the key one being not enough people would pay to attend games.
I don't know who Vim is but i respect his right to voice his opinion for audited transparency or similar. I happen to agree with it in principle, but I don't think it has an icecube's chance in hell of ever happening.

I know for a fact that all tech first team squad get a minimum amount of vouchers plus some get a lot more than others..Dont need to be in dragons squad to get it either.

Permalink Permalink

... Which is totally legit.
The bigger issue is (for some) thatnot every club is competing on the same level - but name me a league anywhere in the world where that's the case now. Historically, earliest amateur leagues and communist-era maybe, but even then clubs were favoured by army or state police in other ways.

tech are a club that invest heavily in their youngsters Napier for eg what is wrong with paying petrol  expenses etc. some travel further than others get more vouchers can't see the problem if some guy at any club gets  big money good luck to them. Been successful

Cant argue with the success factor of late for the men; just as coastal have been successful with the women - with a different philosophy i suspect.
To be fair, Tech do a lot of work on obtaining funding and seem to be very successful at that too - far more than any other club.

Every club will have different philosophies, means and opportunities. That will never change. Vim, can you be more explicit about the nirvana you seek, or how you would implement it, or is it just a kum-by-yah pipe dream?

It's probably a lot easier to gain funding when you own your grounds (am I correct with this in regards to Garrick?).... but there also has to be the programmes in place to ascertain this type of funding, and is possibly something a lot more clubs could be looking at!

Not the first time I have been accused of being a hippy, and it's ok I don't find it particularly offensive.
My Nirvana, great band, is where clubs have excellent junior and youth programmes, where players are trained up and make their way through the ranks to hopefully the Premier League. Sure there will be movement for a variety of reasons, however money shouldn't come into it. Mainland looked closely into the legality of such payments, and it is made clear that it is not ok. We then don't have players holding clubs to ransom continually asking for more each year, and other teams not getting anything.

If we were handing out vouchers for $? worth of petrol, this does mean that big money (wherever it came from) is being spent on one team at the expense of others. One rumour was that a player was on $350 a game plus a goal bonus, which could be almost $10k a year. Not a bad little extra to not declare on your end of year tax return. Yes Tech are really good at getting funding, sometimes being able to do it as a number of different football clubs!

Vim I take it your not a Tech person .

Talking about rumours as u say ur club are very sterile , so there is obviously no truth that when a certain Irish lad wasn't happy at Coastal he was persuaded with an incentive to stay.

Also a certain striker who was looking to leave was given a package to stay and reach 100 games.

Also heard that when pro Stuart Kelly was picking between Bay$, ca$h tech  and fc he considered  a $10 k offer from spirit to coach ressies

GG I read that as come-buy-a-pie dream which is the approach many clubs take to financial add airs, not a Vims necessarily and definitely not Cashmere's. They have the double whammy going on of successful relationships with trusts, council and other funding agencies and work very hard in those areas whilst also having the benefit of being able to charge $150 for a junior sub that then allows them the luxury of attracting better senior players through legitimate reimbursement of expenses. Other clubs may be envious or not but football, like life, is never a level playing field. The determining factor in my view is is it good for football? Where would the EPL be without paying players? Deep down I know Vim supports paying players because he has a Sky subscription that assists clubs in the EPL to pay those massively inflated salaries :)

What's sight without sound? Love without peace? Copulation without conception?

How much you guys don't know about me. I don't support the EPL as I don't have the Premier League add on to my already enormous Sky bill.

As for those awful rumours about Coastal, I have never heard of any of them, and would go against any other history the club has had. But, never say never! I'll see if I can dig up some juice on it.

1. The only "incentive" was he got made Captain at some point. Left the club for non-football reasons ie: opening a shop in Nelson

2. Package, small package = a night out with Ronaldoknow and Vim

3. Coaching, yes some Coaches get paid. But no not $10K for reserves. That's inaccurate to the point of farcical.

there might be reasons to moan at Coastal but dodgy as F*** payments clearly designed to circumnavigate the Amateur Rules is not one of them. And while I'm at it what other rules can we choose to ignore? 'Cos at the end of the day it's Mainland's fault right?
