Mainland Premier League (Part 1)
I totally agree that the standard is not awfully high here is Chch but Cant Utd aren't gonna import that many players. The mpl is going to be where a large proportion of the players are going to come from...we just dont have the money here that the Auckland sides do to throw at imports.
I think it would be good to discuss who would be most likely to be effective in the ASB premiership. Some names that have played at mpl level but arent proven at ASB premiership level but i think would be effective:
Strikers: Welbourne (CS), Miles (Western)
Midfielders: Piercy (Bays), Smith (Nelson), McIntyre (Bays)
Defenders: Wilson (Western), Parker (Halswell)
Agree? Disagree? What do you think?

Agree, Reece at Halswell is a quality player bit of a waste that he plays in defense imo.
Yea i think Murphy should be given a go. May not start for CU but would be a good player to come off the bench and make an impact. If its true that Miles is going to the states then this could be a big loss for Western. Think he is their captain, was the youth team captain too, and the couple games i saw was the best player for them. I agree that if Thomas was to concentrate on his keeping he could well overtake Batty for the num 1 spot...but will this happen?

Think the guy ur talking about from Western is Anthony Jones, and i agree he should be in the squad as he's been excellent this year and has done well in previous seasons with the Canty youth team. A few of the other shouts in this thread are also worth a call up but it'll probably be the usual suspects that make the team.
Nelson Suburbs walked all over Richmond last year. If you compare the players one on one, Nelson Suburbs still has the better squad. Richmond haven't played a tough team all season. (except for my Marlborough) Even with Nelson's young squad, they must be favourite. You're obviously a Richmond supporter.
Bays 4 ChCh U 2 Half time 2-2
Woolston Tech 4 Halswell 0
Coastal S 1 Nomads 0 HT 1-0
Nelson 5 Western 2
That makes Tech's catch up game against Western very important now (we get a sneak preview as these two teams square off in the Chatham Cup at Ferrymead Park on Monday), a win in that game would put Tech 2 points behind Bays and Suburbs, they play Suburbs next Saturday at Ferrymead Park while Bays play Western, a game Western desperately need to win to get their season back on track. I let my guitar speak for me
Kotahitanga. We are one.
Caversham v Western
Roslyn-Waikari v University
Richmond Athletic v Coastal Spirit
You got your wish Vim! The only all Mainland battle. Interesting that Southern teams were involved a round earlier this year, makes for a few good road trips.
So if all three Christchurch teams lose, then its a three-way tie for the Macfarlane Cup?centre_half2011-06-07 15:46:46
