Mainland Premier League (Part 1)

3-1 for tech against bays at ferrymead park. Bays missing Kamo due to red card last week, Tech had a few lads patched up but starting. Didn't see the first half an hour so can't really comment but believe it was J Price with a header from a free kick to make it 1-0. Otherwise it looked fairly even. Price almost scored again from 5 yards but managed to put it over the port hills. 2nd half tech looked the stronger and had a few half chances before a mix up with a corner fell to Price again, who put it away from close in. After that Ferrymead answered with a screamer from a free kick, can't remember the lads name but its geoff mc something, anyway it was some goal. Then they had their spell for 10 minutes and might even have equalised. Barton rounded the keeper to make it safe and that was pretty much game over minus a red card for the paddy in Bays defence and a yellow card here and their. Tech are back in it but still a long way to go before they reach last seasons heights. Tomorrow its ferrymead again and fully expect a backlash with Kamo back in the fold and a few tech lads on the treatment table.

Tech could have had 4 or 5 today and were definitely more "up for it" that Bays. How high does tomorrow's English Cup game rate for the teams?

Halswell won 1 nil, a Ewan Bakker goal into the second half, so Nomads while have and uphill battle to avoid the drop now. 

As a tech fan it does'nt make great reading but the neutrals must be delighted 7 pts separating 1st to 7th certainly makes it interesting. Does last mean  automatic relegation or is it a play off? How many go down this season? Nomads are an honest club, if they don't watch it their season will be over before June.

Yes it is automatic relegation unless Mainland change the rules. Altho I thought there was some rule that you have to give a season's notice if you are to change the rules.

The winner of Mainland's Div 1 (looking like FC2011) and the winner of the Nelson Div 1 (almost guaranteed Richmond) play off to be in the Premier League next year. That'll be a great match too.

I suppose their are dishonest clubs but I could neither confirm or deny who those are.

Just to change tack:the Womens Premier league continues to be very interesting,with a couple of unexpected results.Halswell were held 1-1 by bottom placed University(Halswell are definitely not the team of last year),whilst Western hammered FC Twenty 11 4-1.That was a great result for Western and thoroughly deserved:everyone was picking them as "cellar dwellers" pre-season,but they've played really well,individually and collectively.Could be a very tight and interesting season for all...

Shame about tech, well done bays. Good to see Nomads on the score sheet, I hope for 2011's sake thats not a picture of div 1. Bumped into a coastal lad in the pub and he said that they had mostly pdl lads out today, would reckon that would be mostly the case for most teams today?

Warning - English Cup rant follows: Coastal field a PDL side, Tech back up less than 24hrs after top of table clash v Bays, bottom of table Nomads thrash FC20 - supposed shoe-in side for promotion. It's "2nd rate" Cup comp the world over isn't it? Problem is we don't have the player base to justify decent English Cup comp as the tier 2 sides would not even foot it with half the Reserve teams around town. Clubs are clearly voting - Premier League status and Chatham Cup way more important than English Cup. No surprise there. Would Birmingham give back Carling Cup to stay up in Premier league - of course! Would Mancini City trade FA Cup for EPL - yes. Big Vase is a different question altogether. WIth Chatham Cup as our Big Vase i and given the shaky start to the year, seriously what place does English Cup have this year. Not being able to play it midweek it is a farce - and IMHO, disrespectful to its history - which is not in anyone's interests. Decision not to suspend it this year will come home to roost. Rant ends here.

Coastal didn't really field a PDL side, there were 8 or 9 of the usual starting 11 that began the game, altho there was a few new faces that came off the bench. 3 points on the Satdy for me was a whole lot more important considering what was at stake in the PL, so to lose in a cup is no big deal so I spose we agree to some extent. There wasn't much choice without lights in the city to play it midweek so I guess this is the best of a bad situation. I would rather have the English Cup played in 2011 than not.

Oh, and FC20 no shoe-in for promotion, they have to play Richmond first.

Nomads RPL season looking in trouble. Reserve team leading PDL but think they've had easyish draw - big wins over Mid Canty, Universities, and also beat Papanui, Western, Cashmere. Lucky draw with the Academy team on Sat. who had more possession and hit the crossbar. So all up, Nomads PDL talentpool unlikely to come to the rescue of 1st team.

It's really hard to judge that reserve league. With a 15 team league and only playing each team once, it's almost impossible to see who will win. Whose idea was that anyways? And is it a Player Development League? Do you have to have a certain amount of younger players per older players or did they give up on that idea?

Ha please see above post re: any change in procedure need to be put forward with one years notice. So no. Common sense must not prevail!

Not a nomad, but agree with them having an easy couple games in there..... I'm guessing that they will split the table again this season so if a team has had an easy draw when the table is split they may be up there "falsely" and then get a rude wake up call when the new round starts!

Surely no split. There are 15 rounds on the website which takes us into late August so that'll be it. Maybe semifinals or a cup round?

And did anyone notice that the Canty Academy is allowed to gather points this year? Thought they were not playing for points.

I suspect its a glitch in the goalnet tables system, I'm pretty sure the same thing happened last season until the default setting was changed (granted it happened alot quicker than it has this year).

I agree with the concept of the Academy, but not its execution. Yes we need to develop better young players in our region, but is whats happening at present really the best option?

Its taken players from clubs and sh*ts all over Mainlands own rules (I'm referring to the 'no more new clubs/entities' one which limits footballing growth in areas not currently covered by clubs and has also stopped more schools joining what is a piss poor 18s competition, yet the Academy is perfectly acceptable)

Yeah i think Gings is right re Academy teams playing for points - just a Mainland admin stuff up (ho hum). And VF will be right - they'll pay a full round and then a Cup unless weather/EQ gets in the way.

Re Academy "concept/execution" - do you mean Academy for trainings but play at clubs? Plenty of previous experience is rep players gravitate to one coach/club anyway (at all levels) so what's the diff? Surely as Cantabs we want the best getting the best opportunity don't we? Does it matter if it is at my club or yours or Academy? Seriously, I dunno. The Academy does however need to address pathway after spending time there (where will the lads training with Danny and Ceri go next year etc) and I note there is no Academy for the next group of players - 11 year old boys/12 year old girls?

As for quality of 17/18 DIV 1 see "hoary old chestnut/schools"

I do mind. I don't mind it being at your club, prefer it's at my club, however have an issue with it being the federation we pay money to run the game. Seems a little random that a big organisation is able to take the best players out of the clubs to call their own. My biggest gripe is how they can go straight into a Canty Rep team without trialling. Where is the incentive for other clubs to put in the hard work knowing their best kids are going to be skimmed?VimFuego2011-05-24 16:17:35

Simple fix - change the 15s to 16s and take out 17s. Seeing as quite a few clubs have 15s as the last step before PDL make it a bit tougher, and hopefully by merging 17s & 18s together its actually a decent competition.

The Academy is a disastrous concept.The 'Rep Migration' Problem is easily fixed by limiting who is at what club. A ceiling is placed on Rep footballers in the one team , this can also incorporate 'homegrown players'. AND NO REP COACH IS A COACH IN THAT GRADE and/or PARENT OF ELIGIBLE CHILD

The Rep football program for juniors is no better. It's not just that it to all extents and purposes is a clique, it actually drives quality players out of the game. The pressure to make the team is high, yet the trial , selection and actual coaching ability of the Rep teams is so utterly haphazard and inconsistent it's IMO better to not do it. I watched 2 age groups last year and it was embarrassing the gulf between coaching levels. And it's awful to watch seemingly pre-determined trials.

The issue then becomes the reaction to not nominating players... You either face sanction for not sending players or you send them to a situation that is bad for them. You can't win.

Another one is the player turning down the Academy, then not getting picked the following season.

I trialled for Canterbury Youth team about 10 years ago. I could tell from the minute I got there I wasn't going to make it. Sure enough the guys who all knew each other and the coach made the grade. Worst thing was it was the day after my 17th birthday and I stayed sober the night before just for the trial. Should have given it a miss.
