Yes agree considering the Mainland League is meant to be an amature league. Hopefully is is not gaming money going as player payments.

U15 Nike cup: 6 chch and 3 nlsn teams entered in mainland leg. Local prelim rounds will cut it to 4 and 2. Expect chch teams to make it to next stage will be cashmere fc20 Halswell with waimak nomads coastal battling it out for the 4th spot. Nelson pretty strong at this age group at rep level, not sure if one of the clubs has the upper hand. My pick is cashmere because the team is chock full of lads who have played together for a while ( canty school of football, FTC, reps etc), plus a coach who has been with them all that time ( terry hall) plus Fred Simpson's experience with the age group in this comp last year. Players to watch: Halswell GK, 2-3 Nelson lads of Cambodian background, cashmere left winger, coastal midfielder, FC striker. Chch prelim round sat 2 feb.

Nomads probably stronger than Halswell. Be interested in how many younger ones got pushed up. They play a friendly v Coastal on Wednesday at ASB Park.  FC2011 played Coastal the previous week.

Chris Anderson playing for Nomads, has been seen at Tulett Park training.

Nike Cup. Nomads have a new raw coach for the team this year and have lost last years rep keeper.

Halswell def stronger than nomads. Nomads very young side I think and most can play Nike again next year. Isn't it the dregs of Dale Anderson's team, prior to his son going to APFA?

Halswell won 14D1 so defo won't be mugs. Pretty sure the vast majority of nomads will be back for the 2014 cup.

Tech to win it - the whole team is FTC and/or Rep with quite a few playing 15s last year.

Draw for the 3 pools of the prelims of the Nike Cup have been done which have Coastal, Waimak and Tech in one, and Nomads, Halswell and FC2013 in the other. Top two of the pools play in the proper comp with the 2 Nelson teams.

AFPA boys turned out for Nomads last night. Both sides had rings in.

Stretford is correct about 1x Coastal midfielder when he identified players to watch ,  Pleased he's chosen FTC/NTC.

Unconfirmed grist to the rumour mill:

1. Cashmere Technical paid employee (i think they have a few on the payroll) has either had hours drastically reduced or lost his job due to club losing funding from gaming trusts. Apparently major stoush between Cashmere/Tech club(s) and Mainland over "smoke and mirrors" approach by the newly merged club(s) led to pow-wow of chairmen/women of each organisation trying to sort on-going issues.

2. Apparently the proposed new "Burnley pathway" is going to cost $1,000 per annum for players; slightly more than FTC (personally I'm still confused over whether or not the Burnley thing is just a "coach the club coaches"/scouting exercise). Regardless, Mainland look to have another APFA-style academy on their doorstep. Relationships between Mainland and APFA, Burnley Academy, some clubs (see #1 above) at an all time low. Development pathways galore; which ones do forum viewers think is best?

3. Resignations, heated discussions and new jobs in futsal-land as Mainland 'align' the sport which has been quietly growing the last few years.

#1 doesn't surprise at all. Its a shame someones lost their job but hopefully the issue/s are sorted.

#2 - FTC/APFA/Burnley/Whatever - it doesn't worry me as long as all of them are afforded the same respect from mainland/NZF. NTC accreditation would be ideal and instead of 16 kids getting a chance 40+ would. win win for the players, the coaches & mainland/NZF.

#3 - sport is growing big time, hopefully this means it is managed & promoted better (website included). our mainland ladies are in aussie this weekend competing apparently.

Its already been mentioned but a certain ginger midfielder 10k a season @ bay$ - locked in and ready to go apparently. Will this lead Western for relegation?

Heard the students have picked up a few gun players from nelson/welly/overseas and are backing themselves to win Div 1 - things could get interesting if that happens.

They have been applying for funding under the Woolston Tech, Cashmere Wanderers and Cashmere Tech monikers apparently. Never mind double dipping try triple dipping.

All academies should be based at clubs FFS. These independent academies (including the so called School of Football) are ridiculous and only serve to undermine Mainland and NZ Football, they will never get support/respect from Mainland/NZ Football because they seek to be independent therefore there is no way they should actually exist. What is it about the clubs that causes someone with too much money or a supposed connection with a club or name from the past to think that they can do so much better? Ridiculous. All they do is  undermine the efforts of all clubs. Put that same support into clubs and really see the game grow.

He hasn't played for Western for the past 2 seasons as far as I'm aware

Now that would be good for the game!

I think western is the only MPL team I didnt watch last season as I dont remember seeing them/him. Still think they'll be at the lower end of the table.

Agreed the students in MPL would be good for the game here, although waimak must be getting to the point where their youth set up reaps benefits at the top

Waimak. Not close judging by performances of last years Div 1 team.

a certain ginger @ 10K, all I thought of was you gings...

1. sorry if someone lost their job. Wondering of Lotteries Trusts have an opinion?

2. Issue still remains on where these players come from. All academics want the best, it helps them sell tickets/spaces. Furthermore when it comes to the next step up when all things are even the selector may well pick the guy he has seem 40 times as opposed to the player new to him. So have open accreditation for whoever is this months flavor of coaching excellence, but if the NTC selector is the FTC coach...

More opportunities for more players is of course on paper a good thing. My real reservation is watching 'elitist' training camps where parents outlay $ , and I watch fairly average players with average skills getting average coaching. They then complain that the pathway to higher honors is blocked by forces that never identify problem #1, your kid wasn't good enough, despite the small fortune you spent on him.

3. Now there is a surprize!

Yeah they were rubbish last year but apparently 1st team training out there started early and they've got a young team. for the good of div 1 I hope its competitive between a few teams.

Haha foal we both know I wouldnt go near that club.

PDL draw is up on the Mainland site, and as previously mentioned somewhere, it appears to mirror the Premier League. So the reserve teams play at the same place as their top team. Both Western's premiers and reserves play at English Park.  Works fine for everyone apart from FC20, whose reserve team plays at Avonhead Park and the premiers are back at Burnside Park. I take it that it the fields/facilities are up to Premier League standard.

I wonder how on earth Western can afford that. Its not like they have a huge junior section to prop up the MPL teams expenses

Nike Cup, some clubs are finding a few players are playing for their high schools this year.

Parents not aware of regs re changing club or to a school from last season not being eligible to play.

what is the rule?

whoever you play  Nike Cup for in 2013 is also your side for the winter 2013 season
whatever club you played for in 2013 has to be your Nike team for 2014

Here is the rules from the Mainland site:

4.8. Players can only play, in the MUPC 2013, for the club with which they were last registered during the
2012 winter season (February – September).
4.8.1 Further having moved club during the 2012 winter season and played in the MUPC during the
2013 competition, the player must remain with that club for the duration of the 2013 winter
season.
4.8.2 Any request for transfer or matters regarding the eligibility of players to transfer will be at
the sole discretion of NZF and made in accordance with NZF Regulations.

The REAL question though is: will the rules be enforced?

Last year alone, there was the example of a 2012 Cashmere Nike Cup player who played for Christs College in the 2012 winter season; and the Cashmere 2011 player who played 2012 Nike Cup and season with FC20. There will no doubt be others. As someone mentioned earlier, 2013 APFA boys (4 that i know of) have been playing in lead up games for Nomads and Waimak and FC20. Not sure whether or not they'll be playing for those clubs this year.

in regards to the APFA lads. are the rules they must *play* for the club in 2013 or must be *registered* - can see this being like Halligan's lads being in the CSOF but still registered to nomads and thus eligible for Tsunami etc.
