Mainland Premier League (Part 2)
My picks:
1) Tech
2) Bays
3) Nelson
4) Coastal
5) FC
6) Uni
7) Halswell
8) Western
I'm picking Halswell [as per my picks same as MM} to be bottom from this Saturday to the end of the season.
Last hit out for Halswell on Tuesday night was a 1 all draw with Nomads.
We are almost there weekends action as follows:
Saturday 2:45pm
FC Twenty11 vs. Western - Avonhead Park
Ferrymead Bays vs. Halswell - Ferrymead Park
Universities vs. Coastal Spirit vs - English Park
Sunday
Nelson Suburbs vs. Cashmere Technical - Saxton Field 1pm
Last call for the regulars on here for the Pools Comp. We have 16 so far so just confirming that entry fee is a tenner and a can of beer, to be paid at the end of the season to the winner.
Entries close at 6pm on the Friday night, when I will post on here your picks. (unless people want to keep it secret? More fun to see others I reckon)
Still looking for someone to help out with the google forms and organising if you wanna.

MPL Reserves League. This league has a bye each week with only 7 teams now in it.
Mainland had a prior draw out with 8 teams and no bye needed.
They have had the old chestnut from previous years of trying to fit all clubs reserve teams {MPL & CCL] into a league to suit all.
CCL Reserves have 5 teams and a bye.
What happened to Mainland coming out with we must have 8 team leagues?
There is a game between the two teams with the bye each week.
Western due to play Selwyn in the first of these games at the same time as the Western MPL team are at English Park v Nelson.

The previous draw had both leagues combined for the reserves but a few teams objected to this as it makes things a lot easier when reserve teams play before main teams at the same venue.
Having had to rush across the city to sit on the bench previous I can guarantee as a player I got to play longer for a reserve team when both were at the same place. It just makes logical sense
I wanna see lotsa tweeting going on this weekend please! It's the 21st century inall and I want my football fix. As AW82 says, use and search the hashtag #chchmpl.
Follow coastalspiritnz for all my tweets that start our really eloquent and frequent and then end up slurred and incoherent by the end. That's if I end up tweeting the final result.

That's The Coastal Way
Central United from Auckland have two teams in the tournament "Gold" and "Red".
I imagine it's similar to Coastal Spirit having a "Black" team and a "White" team at the South Island U-19s Labour Weekend.
Great weather to kick of the season and a really good game of football at ASB between 2 good sides. I'm sure Uni wont be happy letting a 2-0 lead slip but think a draw was a fair result in the end. Positive start to the football season for mibe
Mainland Premier League
Men’s
FC Twenty11 3 (Mario Hofmann, Abdul Khalifa, Dylan Chadwick) Western 0 HT 2 - 0
Ferrymead Bays 3 (Michael Forshaw, Elloitt Jones, Preston Bell) Halswell 3 (Joey Clapperton, Dagan Bland 2) HT 1 - 0
Universities 2 (Aaron Heath, Hamish Foy) Coastal Spirit 2 (Tristian Nichol, Aaron Spain) HT 0 - 0
Halswell and Coastal come from 3 and 2 goals down respectively to gain a share of the points.
Proof tht it's never over til the final whistle. I think the Halswell result must have shocked everyone. From wht I heard coastal uni game wasnt the most entertaining game particularly the 1st half but I guess tht can be expected from the 1st round. Any players stand out in games played today?

that depends what u define as entertaining! Both sides certainly tried to play an attacking brand but both were cancelled out by organized defense at both ends. Was certainly hot conditions second half which saw more opportunities, but in my humble opinion was a decent game all round by both sides. Think both will have aspirations of pushing into top 4 and from what I saw todays game there is no reason both wont be there about come season end
I enjoyed the game mind you who wouldn't when you're 2-0 down and come back to 2-2. There were golden chances for both sides however some great goal line clearances from either the keeper or last defender. It was pretty action packed if you ask me and bodes well for a wicked season.
In picks news no one will be getting 100%. In fact I've only got one result so I'm going to cancel all bets...

Vin now that there are sides from outside Christchurch in both MPL's is the #chchmp and #chchwpl time for a more global one. Hell I must be getting PC.
what's wrong with #mplmen & #mplwomen ?
given Nelson has been a dominant side in the #MPLmen for the last 16 years its taken you a bit of time to get PC ;-)

I did ask Mainland to do a push with clubs but nothing.
I know that Andrew Currie, Wanda's replacement want's to push social media for their Friday night games at English Park.

I try to do it - but the Ref tells me off for using my phone while playing.
All Seriousness though - will we be including the CCL in this also?

My point was that we've just kicked off both the men's and women's premier leagues and we've had sweet fudge all in terms of promotion and nothing on game day. Would be great for the many staff at Mainland (or take turns) and take an interest or put some hours in on Satdy to send out some updates or promotion stuff.
I dunno, just looking for those leading the game to assist in making our game better and more popular. Pie in the sky?
