Weekly wage bill for rovers  is just shy of $5,000. Judging by yesterday's performance biggest waste of money. What club decides to spend this big when they don't have any real junior grades playing. Biggest joke in nz football.
Surely rovers fans aren't happy with this?

So a club on the Shore can organise themselves a "star-studded" line up which they throw $5k a week at in an effort to win what? But all those egos and idealistic English attitudes can't band together to organise a decent attempt at getting into the ASB Premiership. Talk about focussing on completely the wrong thing

Some intriguing fixtures this weekend;

Bay O vs ECB

Waitak vs Ngaruawahia

Three Kings vs Glenfield

Hamilton vs Central

Birkenhead vs Onehunga

Bays will be looking to get their season back on track after experiencing the rare situation of two losses on the trot.

Waitak and Ngara will both want to climb clear of bottom of the table.

Three Kings keen to extend their good start whereas Rovers will be desperate to justify their hefty wage bill after only picking up 1 point in their last two fixtures.

Rumours of some rifts at Wanderers won't help against a Central side out to prove a point despite missing their ACFC players.

Birkenhead will look to extend great start against against an Onehunga side that have also started well.

My pick of the games would have to be Birkenhead vs Onehunga with some excellent young talent on display from both sides.

Went along to Wanderers v Central today, 3-1 to Wanderers, two goals to Gurjeet Singh and one to Jarrod Young from the spot, Zambrano for Central. A bit of scrappy game, the pitch at Porritt is just awful so that's the main reason why, Wanderers played decently in spite of that - Singh was his usual self, created some great chances with his pace before wasting them, and then scoring an absolute ripper from outside the box, a laser into the top-left corner.

Central were a bunch of youngsters (Sail, Mitchell, Cochran, Lausev etc) and then Adam McGeorge who wandered around a bit in the midfield, while Wanderers are a very young side at the moment - their backline is all under 23 I believe including a couple of promoted faces in Pratt and Rogers, while Young and Molony continue to show promise. Broderson went off injured with a calf injury, but their Argentinian replacement - Hassan - went well in his place. Game was well controlled too despite a whole lot of niggly challenges (pushes in the back, trips from behind etc).

Wanderers will be around and about 3rd or 4th again this year I think, Central obviously we shall wait and see after their likely reinforcements arrive.

N Bomb, you say the pitch at Porritt is awful. What do you base that on

The Birkenhead contingent are a tad quieter today.....

Everything. Testimony, watching the game, having been on it, lumps everywhere, uneven grass, thankfully they're doing things about it, which is handy, but today it was hard to play a ball along the ground further than 30 feet, players kept having to wait for it, losing it under their feet, etc.

Birkenhead did not play well today at all. Have a look at the for and against, can not convert in front of goal, 5 or more clear opportunties not taken.

Played nearly the whole of the second half with 10 men because Turner doesn't know when to keep his mouth shut.  This did not help.

Onehunga played well and their first goal was a ripper, a bullet from outside of the 18 yard box which I'm not sure the Birko keeper knew anything about until just before it hit the net.

This is going to be a close season based on the 4 rounds to date.

Thanks for the photos and write up Enzo - you made the game sound better than what it was. The scoring in the first 20 was entertaining, the rest of the game was pretty dour. Waitak had 3 good chances in the second half and all of them were directed straight at the keeper.

Ngara will struggle unless they play a lot better than they did yesterday, and Waitak will be counting down the days until their O League players return - they'll need them if they want to trouble any of the top 6 sides IMO.

Another draw today - those are few (reportedly) expensive competition points. Other than Williams who else to come back in to Rovers line up?

Rovers 4 games 5 points 20k down the pan. All clubs should aspire to be like them.

Three for me, and two for them.

Yeah, I agree it wasn't a great game. The division 2 game I went to yesterday (Oratia Waiuku) was better...

Don't get me wrong, I really appreciate your game reports and photos - just read your Oratia Waiuku report, surprising result, great write up.
Thanks Enzo.

Why are 2 of the NRFL games showing as postponed on the website, Central v Waitak and Glenfield v ECB?

Permalink Permalink

I'll hazard a guess it's because u20 player call ups.

my question is how many players have to be involved for you to be able to request a postponement - 3?

Permalink Permalink

Central have 3 - East Coast Bays have 4.

Have Miramar had their game postponed as well?

i'm torn about this - great to have clubs getting their young players picked up but kinda thinking ECB should just lump it since they recruited from that team so must have known this would be an issue.

I have no vested interest in it though - so who really cares...

I think you have a point there Chopah. If you are going to recruit young players that you know that are going to be picked, then you know what comes with it. The flip side is if you did not allow that, would some clubs not recruit you?

At least Glenfield won't drop points this week. They won't be used to that.

Cripes, last I heard it was 3-1 to Birko. Sounds like a last-minute ripper to equalise.

Birko played the second half with 10 with Jack H-M getting sent off soon after half time, and Ngara played the whole game with 12! As well as the send off Ngara were awarded a pen that no one knew what it was awarded for and then in the first half a Ngara defender palmed a Smith header around the post which all the players immediately appealed for and everyone saw - other than the 3 blind officials!

Dan Morgan hat trick and he missed his fourth - deflected shot from his side of half way that landed on top of the cross bar!

Ngara's first and last goals were stunners to be fair.
