Hi BigT, I wasn't saying if it was good or bad, just confirming that it had happened.

In actual fact I agree with you. If a club/coach/team aren't able to provide everything that a player is looking for, then it's up to that player to try and work with that club/coach/team to change things and if they can't then it's up to the player to change club.

It's the same in school football. I am aware of 7 current Waikato based/schooled players that have moved the Auckland schools for the 2014 school year because they want to play at the highest level available to them, and as much as other parts of the country want to think otherwise, Auckland school football in the Premier division is the best football, in terms of standard and depth, available in NZ for teams of players aged 14-18.

Of course school football is different to club football, but also very similar in terms of supporting the point, sometimes players have to move club/school for their best interests.

As to whether clubs should look to build teams (particularly their first teams) primarily through internal player development or by looking outside their own club and 'poaching' - well that's another discussion altogether.

If you're a really good player aged 16,17,18 looking to continually improve, why wouldn't you be playing senior 1st or 2nd team club football? It's certainly easier to stand out playing first XI but if you are good enough at that age you need to get out of the comfort zone and start playing against men.

You can do both. e.g. David Browne played for St Peters first X1 Saturdays and for ACFC Sundays in the ASB.

Because most Premier Division schools are also well sought after to be at academically as well as athletically. A lot of players get both good football and a good education, a lot of times attending under some form of scholarship. So having joined that school - usually because of your sporting ability - you are expected to play for them.  Do you recall the articles on the TV when a couple of players from Westlake wanted to stop playing for school so they could play for ECB's instead? The Westlake students lost all their privileges and we're effectively "sent to Coventry".

And honestly, Auckland Premier level schools football is better than any second team club football and better than most Div 2 football in Auckland and better than a lot of Div 1 football - in my personal opinion. Of course NRPL is in another league again, but very few school age players are playing in this league anyway.

Yes, but he'd be an extreme exception. And he actually didn't play that many gams for St Peters last year, and when he did he was restricted by ACFC on how many minutes he could play for school.

And really there weren't that many weeks cross over, O League / school. Bit different for winter football when school kicks off at midday and most first team games kick off at 2:45 - on most weekends, logistically (travel time etc), a player just can't do both, even if he wanted to and the school/club agreed.

Why they don't just move school football to midweek (which is when nearly all knockout cup games are played) so that the kids could play for both school and club, is beyond me.

Different situation in Chch where quality of first X1 football quite average. The really good 16-18 year olds play 1st or 2nd team footy with and against men.

Oh I see. Whereas the standard of the first 11 football in Auckland (at least in the Premier Division) is very very good. Personally I'd prefer to watch a school game to a lot of Auckland div 1/2 club games.

I see why you call yourself "optimist". The games I've seen, at MAGS mostly, were very very competitive. But as for the standard being very very good.... hmmm. I'd settle for good. Sorry.

Ha ha. Yeah lots of passion and rah rah for the school motto etc in schoolboy sport.

I guess I've just seen too many kids who thought they were the bomb - until they played 1st or 2nd team club footy.

At the moment there are two Waikato youngsters training with Birko. 1 eligible for U20 the other not. There may be a third player come up shortly but nothing guaranteed. Hobbo has not promised the earth or guaranteed anything. I also know for a fact that the two lads from the Waikato were not hunted out by Hobbo. .

Good or bad?

Now for Papakura City's next trick... AFF pending transfer: Indianna Jones, from Waiheke FC to Papakura City AFC.

that one came from the Northern League forum - fuelled by Buffon who saw it as another piece of ammo for him to use against Glenfield in the paying players debate on at the moment.

nice rule of thumb to go on in the NL forum is if no-one denies a claim on there then it's normally not true!

Just one less mercenary they are signing then.

Three for me, and two for them.

I didn't say I don't agree with you - I just have far less chips on that particular table than you and Birko do.

Fair enough, but given they are our biggest and fierecest rivals and given the recent history between us in prems matches you would expect there to be animosity, wouldn't you?
