Topleft07, no problems with your approach, you have done the right thing and are using it as a development opportunity as opposed to grabbing all the elite 1stX1 school players from the local area who are already well catered for by the system.

The idea is to provide a pathway and development opportunity into Senior football and into the clubs for those players who are not at the top level yet. I think the big issue this season is that there is not a div 1 so we will get the Miramar situation. With luck Capital Football will realise this and re-instigate the top div next season.

We have used the League to develop those good 2ndx1 players from the local schools (and a few 1stx1 players) as well as providing an opportunity for the not so good players to get more game time, good coaching (if I do say so myself ) & help them reach their potential.

In fact this season we have a number of U21 players who are now playing for the club reserve & 3rd team so the pathway is working.

The big thing I see is that my club now has another 64 players who may stick around and play Senior football for us. The bulk of these guys wont make the 1st team but they are the ones that the clubs use to subsidise their top teams so if they are not looked after or drift away the game as a whole suffers.

Long winded reply I know but hopefuly it sums things up. I look forward to playing your team.
The part highlighted in bold, I would say, is the primary reason for us starting up the U21 team and the U19s is intertwined with that. At the end of the day, it's all about developing school boys into senior footballers. And just like you guys we're starting to see some of these guys train and play for the reserves already.
I can see your point about the elite players possibly being in the wrong place but two divisions is deffinately the answer. If the better kids want to play I can't see why we should stop them, the better the league is the better it is going to be for developing players. Ideally it would be good for more clubs jump on it so there's enough teams for two divisions in the future. That way we can please everyone, hopefully.

Fuck this stupid game

Teza, your problem is Mediocrity throughout your brain. You should embrace excellence and cultivate excellence, not exclude excellence within your U21 league. Don't just be another brick in the Wall.
I know I'm wasting my time posting this but

u21 league = cap 8 - 18

Elite kids are already being catered for.

nightz, you should organise a matchup between the 2 top teams from U21 playing against the 2 top teams from cap 8 and see whether you are right or not. Looking purely from the results, I suspect the u21 teams are far better than cap 8.

watching them they (Miramar) would give a cap 2 team a good game.

Most play college Saturday, 2 bench warm Saturday afternoon, if my source can be relied on.

I believe Miramars players are a mixture from St Pats, Wgtn College 1stX1 & the club (don't quote me on that though)

I've seen Sam Becker and Ethan Mortar play for them when I watched them once (they play for Miramar Reserves on Saturday) and they are decent lads. I'm told Joel Wiechern has played for them also and he is one for the future IMO. And apparently there's some other big lad from Auckland who's quite good who is just coming back from two horrific injuries - I'm told he was with the wider NZ U20 squad before it was whittled down. So players of that quality will make it difficult for any side against them.

We play the North Wellington second team at the end of training most weeks. Who are in cap 3 I believe. And we do alright against them. Have won a few, lost a few.
And my U21 team is bottom of the table with no wins this season. I would say that from that alone, we would be better than cap 8. And the Miramar, island bay and wellington united teams would be higher, cap 1 or 2 level.

You are not wrong there.

The issue is that I think a couple of the clubs have the wrong idea of what the league is about. It is not about sticking all your elite U19s in a  team to help prepare for Napier or giving all your U21 Senior 1st & 2nd team players an extra game, they are already catered for. It is about keeping those good (and not so good) solid U21 players who are not yet ready to play Seniors involved in football as well as those 2nd & 3rd 11 school players more football.

If teams keep getting thumped by the likes of Mirimar (no disrespect to them by the way) etc then we will start to lose the other players from the game which is counterproductive & detrimental to football in Wellington overall as these are the guys that will make up the bulk of the Wellignton lower leagues going forward.

For us it is an opportunity to develop and look at players for U19s, I don't see a problem with that. We aren't playing any of our first team U21s and mostly only any reserve U21s who don't get much game time on the Saturday. At our club we only have enough guys for one U21 team, there is a mix of handy players and some not so much but we play who we have and who wants to play. We can't say "the point of this league is not to win by 7+ goals so we should maybe try weaken our side to help the others out" because we are just playing who we have simple as that.

Given you've only got enough players for one U21 team what do you think has happened to all your 'Junior Combined' players from previous years?  North Wellington, Tawa and Onslow are encouraging them and are trying to get them into senior football.  What about your club? NW City well beaten by Tawa today.  Got to play on Wakefield artificial for the first time.  Match would likely have been abandoned had we not been on the turf.  Damn lucky to have it - cheers WCC.

Good to see that CF has split the league into A and B. This should mean that we all get better games for rest of season - if it ever stops raining ...

Im back..
I know we had problems with the proper ref not showing up. But could the capital football qualified ref from tawa please do something to fix the fact that the table and results look like this?

Nth Wgtn Athletic __ Tawa __ No result by 5.30pm
Nth Wgtn City 0 Nth Wgtn United 0

Just not so wonky (thanks iPhone)
If it's not his fault, I'm sorry. But he got our coach to sign the cardhe had so you would expect that it was up to him.
And it's horribly frustrating to check the results and seethat our first win hasn't been counted

I know that.
But surely since Capital football provide refs for our games and the refs keep the score card, they should be the ones responsible for that?
And despite our ref not showing up. The one from Tawa who took over was a qualified capital football ref and he called them to ask if it was okay for him to ref the game.
Should it not have been his responsibility?

It's the responsibilty of the home team to phone the result in.

The refs have been great in this grade all season.  And so has the attitude of all the teams.  No rubbish - just players, coaches and supporters getting on with the game.  Much more enjoyable than many of the grades I see. Turtle_Wal2011-07-05 20:48:25

The ref we got on Sunday was rubbish. And the one who was supposed to be reffing never showed up.
Thats all I have to say.

Other than that the refs we have had have been really good.

Well done Athletic.  Good win against us today.  Loving that Wakefield Park!  Even did a bit of tidying up around the place.

We lost 6-3 to North Wellington today after being 3-1 up after the half.
We should have made the most of the wind in the first half.
Well played but we should have won that, that collapse was embarrassing on our behalf.

I think we are at the point in the season where teams are trying to give their U19's a run.
Tawa looked a very different team today. (Minus a few who have played most games) And Wests agree.

We lost 4-2 (I think) today to Tawa which was pretty gutting.
It wil be interesting to see how they go from now on. Now on 3 points.

I think its the same thing that comes up every year.

I think that given that these last few games are considered "Friendlies" it seems that Capital Football may be aware of this happening? Or is it just convenient for clubs that the Friendlies come at this time of the year and they can play the U21's without other teams complaining about cheating?
Not to say that it is wrong. But its frustrating and feels like pretty bad sportsmanship when teams are stacked with players from higher Saturday leagues to "Give U19's a run"/Win games.

Im not targeting Tawa in particular. They just signaled the start of stacking season.

I think stacking in 21A at this time of the season is ok (does this explain the Island Bay mauling of Wests?) but its not in the spirit of 21B.  We're looking forward to our match against Tawa on Sunday because we are normally evenly matched.  Raroa Park mud could be a great leveller though!

Try to dominate them in the midfield. They have two decent guys there. Both with green boots I think. Actually.. Try to keep with each midfielder when you can and dont give them space.
I think the pitch (If you don't get transferred) may help you there. But they also like playing long balls over the midfield so be aware of that.

Will be interesting to see how you go though.

If Smithy doesn't like it he can stay out of it. Not his business.
