What a strange comment? I am very much out of the bush and walking the talk Mr Beef, at all levels, as I have for many years.

But how do you increase the competitiveness? If you want to develop the top grades, isn't it better to encourage the teams that want to be there to improve? Is an 8 team CL with 2 developing teams better than a 6 team CL?

How can you encourage clubs in Napier/Naki etc to do the organisation and get the sponsorship?! Or do you think it should come from NZF or the local fed? This has been a pretty big task for us too. The admin/$$ side is hard work.

One thing - you said above in the 1990s there were more teams and divisions? Doesn't actually appear there were. Check out the tables here

I know that several years ago there were teams from Taranaki and Hawkes Bay (the Bay pulled out several years ago and the 'Naki the year or two before). Travelling must have been an almighty hastle so maybe meeting half way- one game several years ago was in Levin- could be the answer.
To get to New Plymouth you had to be on the road by 7am on a Sunday- not an enjoyable thing to do at the best of times. You didn't get home until 9 or later. Who would want to do that every week. 1/2 way would be the best result for everyone.

Maybe a bit of history will help you read some of those tables - some of the years do not include the tables for the Central league, i.e. 1998 (six divisions) - hence the comment more teams and divisions, although it was a blanket statement meant generally not specifically....but again that's superflous to my general statement regarding the standard of football in Wellington.

By strengthening the top grade, the aim would be to strengthen the grade, competitiveness and infrastructure below.  There are a lot of examples in other sports (Netball, Hockey) which have embraced or failed to embrace inter-regional competitions throughout New Zealand that you might be interested in looking at online, which I know are being looked at going forward from an NZF top-level perspective.

Haven't got time to save the footballing world today though or get into semantics with you, lives to save, work calls....

No if you include CL then and now, there's still about the same number of teams as now (there are currently 6 divisions as well)

I still don't see how strengthening the top grade will increase competitiveness and infrastructure "below", or how spending more on facilities and refs will improve the standard of play?

If those Napier girls still want to play CL I might know a team with a few spaces...

anyone want to take my team while I'm in South Africa? I will provide you with possibly eleven players, a midget assistant, and hypertension medication.

Karori played Utd at the turf. Close at half time but Karori comfortable in the second half.
Looks like Marist pulled away from LH in the second half to give them a pumping.
UH slipping off the pace a bit after going down to Massey who are on a bit of a roll.

What is it with having refs of 2 years experience reffing a Women's Central League game? Young chap in Palmie game yesterday struggled a bit. AR's (with 40 years experience between them) didn't help either. 1 Ar gave a throw in to Massey when it clearly came of them. The Massey player even owned up to having put the ball out but that didn't even sway the AR's mind. Spectators on the far side even spotted who it came of from but not the guy who mattered. His comment was that he knew who it came of because of the noise it made!!

Yeah, the ref and an AR in the Wharf-United game yesterday looked like they had 20 years between them.

The game was officiated pretty well though, has to be said.

I thought he did well, got the big calls right, one penalty decision and let another foul on Massey striker go so play continued, player recovered got  to ball, shot and scored. Could easily have blown for foul and allowed UH to get 11 back. Also didn't blow up at any physical clashes as some do.
Thought the main issues were off sides and they are at the AR call.
Massey deserved win with a strong team performance, UH seemed to rely on 1 striker and she was well marked.

Manaspur you must be a Massey fan as you failed to mention the ref clearly missing a penalty call at the other end when he said the UH player had advantage even though she had been right in front of goal until the foul, which then ricochetted the ball towards the side line!

Also failed to mention the 0-0 half time result, which could have easily been 2-0 up to UH with one shot hitting the cross-bar and another one-on-one missed. Then yes, Massey were up 2-1 with five minutes to go, when the ref missed the penalty call and UH slipped up. Although I must agree, the lino's made a meal of the off-sides, especially one of the Massey goals which resulted from a lack of an offside flag. One lino seemed to look at the ref for confirmation before putting his flag up.

Quote of the game, UH captain: "How much longer ref," Ref: "Not long" UH captain: "How much longer, how long is not long" Ref: "Not long I said, I don't have have to tell you." Classic!!

I will miss the two games after knockout cup weekend (where we dont have a game (due to not being in it)). I'm sure the seven games I see over there won't have the excitement of YFWCL.

I don't see why a ref should tell a player exactly how long is left to play, the ref is the sole arbiter of the duration of the match, not the players.

Say a team is 1-0 up, ask the ref how long to go, ref says 5 mins, and they proceed to punt the ball out of the park at every opportunity. Now the ref is more than entitled to add time on for time the ball is out of play, but will now have the team who are defending the lead haranging him as soon as the 5 mins is up to blow for FT.

So a referee is likely to (should) always give himself room to be flexible as to determine when he decides when half ends, and not by an indicative answer given to the players.

So I would think the best you should hope for when asking time remaining after 40mins or 85mins playerd would be "a few mins plus stoppage"

That's my opinion anyway

You agree then eejit, we weren't after exacts either, just a general indication of the time remaining (in the common form of time measurement used i.e. minutes) - not much to ask really!

Great to see PNHS pick up their first win, big improvement in 2nd round results and have been scoring goals. Never give up attitude is rewarded, went 2 goals down against Massey, a few weeks ago  inside 10min, then fought back to make Massey work hard for the win.

Yes a couple of crucial  Warfie  injurys did Massey's chances no harm today.

The turf was in great nick - with all the rain this morning I was half expecting it to be truly home like conditions for Karori, but evidently they've got the drainage right at Te Whaea, no standing water whstsoever.

Have to say that the ref at Seatoun/UH game on Sunday was top notch. Let the game flow in what, at times, were terrible conditions. Rain came in just after the second half started and it must have been damn uncomfortable out there for players and officials.

AGreed, Was a good match. Sarah Duffin's second half save was top drawer.
Profile pic. Should you be interested. Lakhsen, on the right, lost touch with him.
Mohammed, on the left, I'm still in touch with. He's now living in Agadez, Niger. More focused on his animals now as tourism has dried up. Is active with a co-op promoting local goods, leather work and bijouterie, into Europe.

The Marist vs Wgtn Utd game last weekend should not have been played on Newtown Park. Most of the field was under water. Players couldn't dribble or pass along the ground, so most of the play was air balls. Wgtn Utd failed to stay on their feet and put in some pretty silly tackles. Marist was left with only nine players on the field by the end of the game.

Looking forward to the Knockout Cup game this weekend.

After watching the UH/Seatoun derby two weeks ago I was dissapointed with Seatouns showing today versus Marist, never turned up, but can't believe Marists run - Are they that good? UH did well v LH last week, even after only 1nil up at halftime and a few dodgy calls and injuries and if they play like they did vs Seatoun they should again take points off them (and hopefully the other clubs do to, their coach is annoying!)
