Think that we've seen the best of Finkler in the A-League already, really hope i'm wrong. Can anyone think of an import that changed club that was successful? Flores who failed, who else?

Berisha and Kosta.

I hardly think Berisha failed. He played 76 games for Roar with 48 goals and 54 games for Victory with 33 goals.

wasn't saying he failed just that he moved.

No, you said he and Kosta failed.

No I was saying he has moved. The question wasn't who had failed the question was who had moved from successful teams. The example was Flores who failed.

Perhaps learn to read before you go about pouring words in other peoples mouths.

There were two questions, in fact. You didn't make it clear which one you were answering, which led to this confusion.

Please play nicely, everyone.

There was only one question, which was "Can anyone think of an import that changed [from a] club that was successful." Then the example given was "Flores who failed". And then the question was restated "Who else [changed from a club that was successful]?

The way I read it Valeo wasn't asking for examples of imports that moved clubs and failed, because that wasn't the point, he's looking to see if there is an precedent of Gui not being a dud.

Semantics of the English language aside, play the ball, not the man.

Sure - I just thought it was odd that Leggy would tell me what I meant as if he knew and I didn't, that is playing the man not the ball and is an extremely bizarre statement. Perhaps he was on the turps, or maybe just trolling.

Not sure that the clarification relates to semantics, particularly as it has come to mean, leaving out its technical meaning, something that is not important.

The first utterance is a short answer modal verb question regarding ability (can), but its illocutionary force is : 'please name a successful import who changed clubs'.

'Flores' is given as an answer to the first question, and the beginning of a list, but modified by a non-defining relative clause 'who failed', which causes a communication breakdown and requires conversational repair. It leads to poor text coherence. The speech act of forum speech falls between the stools of casual writing- in the form of an email and takes on more of the characteristics of conversation, with its more relaxed forms.

It also leaves open the potential confusion of the similar subject question 'Who failed?.

The final utterance also yields some confusion. It is a shortened subject question, which refers anaphorically to the original question and it is ellipted. A fuller question "Who else [Which other highly regarded import player] has successfully changed club ?" would have avoided confusion. Also as mentioned before, the forum use of non-standard punctuation (in this case a comma where one could expect a full stop) consistent with conversation aids commmunication breakdown.

While there is some confusion, given our membership of similar discourse communities and socio-cultural commuities we share the background knowledge to weigh up the two main possible interpretations of the utterance and conclude that the original question was the one that required a response.

Since then however, the purpose of the conversation has moved from one of discussing the quality of players within the A-league, to an attempt to assert social hierarchy and create humour within the expectations of the genre of speech.

People sometimes misinterpret what is said. I obviously misunderstood you. Not on the turps and not trolling.

No Franjic for City tonight. I fancy the Glory to get up tonight, lets say 1-2.

Good call that by Beath, Covic was obstructed by the City player.

I'm used to appalling officiating but fair's fair, that was an excellent decision to disallow that goal.

Bit of a question on Covic's positioning. He left an awful lot of room for that free kick.

Glory looked so good until these last 2 weeks, their season just whimpered out in the end.

So next week is Adelaide vs City & WSW vs Roar.

Should be even in both cases but i am tipping Adelaide and Brisbane to prevail.

Actually, getting outplayed quite a bit these days

On stuff they are going on about the overhead kick but it will have to be better than that to beat Denis Teuarts in the 1975 League Cup Final.

Tonights game is on a pop up channel, not sure if the Fan pass streams that.

I reckon Adelaide 3-0

3-0, that's a big call. On balance Adelaide are the better team with home advantage but MC have got enough serious talent to derail them.

Permalink Permalink

0-0 at halftime, some quality chances for Adelaide but they couldn't convert them

Permalink Permalink

Good, high tempo game this. Reds should be in front but MC look dangerous at times.

Why is it now a tradition that a player or players will rush up to the ref at half time, scream in his face and point towards the location of an alleged foul that happened half an hour ago? I know most of the refs are rubbish but god they don't half cop some abuse.

I know most people tip Adelaide to win this game (I should know, I put a $1 on them myself), but after the first half I reckon this may go down to the wire. Expect the unexpected from Fornaroli and Mooy.

Quality finish by Djite, 1-0

Even when he wasn't scoring, he was still heavily involved in Adelaide's build up play. Since the drought broke I think he is 11 in 13 games
