Auckland A-League Franchise 2012-13

The problem for us was that they started way too late.  Also that former Speights Ale House is pretty rubbish now, and adds to a real shortage of facilities near Albany.

Earliest bus from Manukau arrived 5 minutes from kickoff. No time for booze. I wasn't impressed.

Still, that's a problem to which there is a solution.

I wouldn't mind Auckland getting a franchise... after Christchurch.

No, but The Who did play at NHS.
No one complained about driving up there that night, no complaints about parking or pubs either.

I dont know if it has been mentioned but congrats to the Knights for having the Roar surpass their record last night by 629.

Now Auckland cant be given a  hard time about that any more

[QUOTE=Tegal]The derby would be great!

The things that get called "derby games" in this league baffle me. A derby is between two teams from the same city. They call North Queensland vs. The Roar a "Derby".

That said, I am all for a second NZ franchise. I don't care if it is based in Auckland or Christchurch or Hamilton or wherever. As long as it is well structured and well funded and well run. It would seem that the Auckland market should be able to support a team. The more pathways for Rojas-esque young kiwi talent the better. To make it work there'd have to be a significant proportion of Australian players signed.
Yeah, but again you fail to remember that we aren't in England.

In a small country with only 2 professional teams, you can't tell me that it wouldn't be considered a derby. Especially with the tension between Auckland and Wellington football wise (with varying degrees of banter and seriousness. I.E "jaffas" to...."knitting circle")

When Plymouth Argyle and Exeter City play each other its known as the Devon Derby.  The distance between the two is about the same as South Auckland to Hamilton, same with the derby between Swansea and Cardiff.  So no it does not have to be within a city, even in the UK.

??? Kingsland's full of pubs. Not right outside the Stadium but the BackBencher is a good 10 walk from the RoF, amirite?

Wasn't it a Fury home game so the Fury surpassed it?

Also, the Knights game in question is reliably believed to have had 597 people at it despite the official number of 1600.

Nah, that was the waterlogged matched, 1600 seems to be a fair call.
Okay they weren't all downstairs, but still 1600 is about right.
Some of the pre-season games were like 300-400.

Fans at the Fury v Roarcelona game reckon that the official figure was grossly inflated, too.

Backroom staff stated 597.

I think I was one of them but I'm not certain, I've tried to wipe the memory of the Knights from my mind.

No one would have thought Terry was a starter to buy the Phoenix either when this journey started, so to use the excuse of there is no one showing interest in a new team is a bit thin. Anyway, any talk of an Auckland franchise can only go ahead with someone/corporate showing an interest in owning it.

Eden Park is a good enough handy location. Kingsland pubs would be just as close as what the Backbencher is to Westpac [give or take a few yards].  Transport would be not much of a problem either with Kingsland Railway Station right there and buses chuffing along New North, Sandringham and Dominion Roads all the time. They can also run buses straight to the ground from anywhere. The new Auckland Council could work out a bus/ticket deal like for the Honduras game and like they do for all sports at Suncorp in Brisbane.

Interesting to see who might be interested in taking something like this on, the current financial model of the A League obviously needs some work to make ownership an attractive proposition.

Surprises me that there is still some players playing well in the A-League that never stood out for the Knights, Caravella, Cole and Rose(not sure if he played for the Knights).

They did have some decent players, not a team and maybe too many bad buys.

Cole didn't.  He played for Waitak.

Rose, Caravella, Fitzsimmons, Brockie, Moss, Paston and Adam Casey are the ex-Knights still in the A-league.

Too many players here for a holiday (to quote one former senior player who remains in this country).

Rose was playing for the Knights and as were most of the players, out of their depth.
He is a lot older now, and I reckon he is one of the best left backs in the A league.

If you are old and wise you were probably young and stupid

Good point, it belongs to the Fury now

And it is the official count that counts, so it counts

PS You were right about North, I will defend him now in the same way he defended last nght. zippo

Makes me wonder if that's 597 paying punters.  They were running a 2 for 1 or bring a mate deal around that time.
I've been there for all sorts of occasions and I still reckon the 1600 bodies seems fair.
Either way the official record has now been passed to Qld.

From the Adelaide paper, comments form Ben Buckley

"I think were listening to the concerns of the clubs better than we ever have before and it's undeniably true that we have seen some fantastic football on the field.

"We have to work to get the off-field issues fixed and, yes, that may mean a reduction in the number of clubs now to ensure the long-term growth of the league."

Buckley also said that the FFA was keen to establish a second Sydney team, despite the humiliating withdrawal of the licence granted to the Sydney Rovers consortium.

"We remain very focused on establishing a west Sydney team in the next two years," he said."

2nd NZ team, I dont think so

Personally I don't like seeing that either but there are plenty of other clubs that would be in the same boat.

Christchurch would have first dibs anyway given the good crowds that have turned up for the Phoenix

If it was going to happen in Akl Eden Park wouldn't be the location - they have a limited number of night games per year because they are in the suburbs and Rugby uses all of them.

No one has dibs.  No one else has put their hand up to lose a million bucks a year.

One country, one side for the foreseeable future.
