If they sign Corica as there coach. It will be another reason to hate them.

I have always supported the Nix and yes on occasions have been critical - but definitely not harshly so and only when it has been deserved. Believe it or not over the years it has not been always a bed of roses. Can you find many critical posts since the start of this season?

This thread should actually be an exciting one, new club, new players, the honeymoon period of a NZ club. Once the actual teams play each other then that is the time to kick off.

Some muppets need to look at the title of this thread before using the semantic word

He's got a point here. When i'm in the Arsenal thread and say 'we' i'm clearly not talking about the Phoenix. This thread is about the Auckland A-League team.

But you’re a fan of the Phoenix (hence using this forum) who is also an Arsenal fan. You’re an Arsenal group in the Phoenix pub.

It would be a nonsense to have a significant subgroup of Arsenal fans who were equally committed Spurs fans. Like the Phoenix and Auckland, they are derby rivals.

Other A league club discussion on this board by and large doesn’t use ‘we’ as it is Phoenix fans reporting or talking about another club. As this thread is. It’s not an Auckland thread on an Auckland board.
Those two clubs have existed since the 1880s, Auckland are yet to have a name, let alone kick a ball in anger. It's not an entirely apt comparison. They are also derby rivals as they share a general region of a city, so different to having a nine-hour drive or one-hour flight, which possibly precludes it from being a derby (though I understand in the A League basically every team has a 'derby' with every other for marketing purposes and the word has become interchangeable with 'rivalry').

Also the 'rivalry' aspect is somewhat undermined by the fact most people who will become Auckland supporters probably still support Wellington as of right now. Wellington have had 'home' games in Auckland for years and years even. To carry on the comparison, how many Arsenal/Tottenham supporters would be wishing the other to win? I'd imagine a good proportion would still prefer to see Wellington win over any Australian side, so how rivalrous can it be, if the team is second favourite out of 13 or 14. Arsenal/Tottenham fans would rank the other least favourite. I just feel - maybe it's only me in this view and maybe it will be less reciprocal among Wellington people - that the NZ vs Australia rivalry will always take precedence over Auckland vs Wellington. That's the reality of being in a foreign league.

Ryan
Napier Phoenix
I think we are all forgetting what caused this argument…. Both Ryan and Auckland Phoenix used the word “we” when referring to the Auckland team. I hypothesised that AP had already indicated in a previous post that he was going to jump ship ( and has a history of being hyper-critical of the Nix in the past) and I had hoped Ryan had simply made an honest mistake in using “we”. Historically, Ryan has been the exact opposite to AP and has been a staunch and (at times) rose tinted glasses, supporter of the Nix. Now we have the classic US Presidential race scenario where AP is smoke screening and Ryan is trying to cover up an error with a false defence.. Lol (popcorn ordered because I KNOW neither of them can resist replying to this thread)
Why would Auckland be looking to sign Rojas or Singh in the January window? Windows only apply to the Phoenix who are in season, maybe the pisstake was too subtle.

How does it work for Akld?

i assume they don't care about windows and would be looking to sign players after a coach and training facilities are finalised. Probably in the off-season.

There have been recent statements that they will be trying to sign some players in January, and so why they wanted a coach in place by Christmas. They may sign players in Jan, but make the announcements later.

It’s a watch with great interest, sure as a Nix fan and an NZF fan.

But I’m not excited- if they get Roy I’m happy for both parties, but kind of pissed off with the way he’s used us to keep his contracts in India decent.

And while I’m becoming more impressed with Mr Foley, it’s only right to be cynical and asking questions about the league, about building stadiums as a pre-rec for it working, about Auckland CEO Terry McBling (coach tba- watching very closely after the new names were announced), about the hoopla and support the Nix could also have done with, etc etc

We don’t really know what kind of beast we’re dealing with and how things would go if the going got tough.

I’m excited for the derbies and excited for the reception and response they get at the RoF from Wellington and the team.

Sounds to me like your distance relationship with the Nix might be over? You sound like an Auckland fan first and foremost and a Nix fan second. No worries if that’s so, but I’m not.

I'd rather it was Greenacre as head coach, esp if Corica just signs a bunch of Aussie ALM free agents, or SFC youth players.

Corica being appointed will definitely help when it comes to recruiting established off contract ALM players. Playing for a rookie manager, in a new country might not be that appealing for some.

The optics of McFlynn appointing his mate Corica worries me a little, even if his Win/Loss record is one of the better ones going around

I'm going to sack my sources! 😭
But I'm still happy Greenacre will be in the picture. Would have been a great shame if he were lost to football in this country given the service he's put in to the game here.

Corica - Meh. It's not my team, so results wise I'm not too bothered by his appointment, but I do hope a fair few New Zealanders get their chance in Auckland. I don't want to see a whole array of Australian offcasts make their way to these shores, ala Wellington Phoenix of years gone by. Although iirc Foley has said New Zealanders will be prominent in any composition of a squad, so I guess Greenacre as a right hand man is logical in that regard as well.

Upon reflection, you couldn't really hope for a better appointment. You'd have to gamble on a rookie or someone foreign to the league. Any other coach who has done as well or better than Corica (other than Popovic who is not available) has gone on to bigger things and would need ridiculous money to take a backward step. Other than maybe Kisnorbo? But he couldn't have done worse in France.

Pros are he knows the league and he knows what should be expected of a high performing "big" club. You probably need that sort of know how for a new franchise.

It isn't preposterous to think he might recapture the sort of success he was achieving 3 years ago...

I’m confused.

Sydney isn’t part of the Foley empire (yet?)? Or it was the price of gazzumping the other bids joining the NSW festival of football and taking their cast offs?

After all they’ve both got bridges!

Hiring Greenie with an Aussie assistant would have sent a signal they’re serious about local football. So so far- American owner, Aussie CEO, Aussie coach and a Kiwi who’s been working for the City football group in Aussie as GM, links to NZ football unknown. Greenie some unknown role.

Greenie should tell them to stick it and stay with the Nix. It sounds like they want his contacts and knowledge on the cheap. And how well has a coach who can’t choose his own assistant ever worked out?

Muscat, too, might have shown ambition. But here they go hiring direct from the bottom of the table. It’s got the ring of football colonialism- not good enough for Sydney so send him to Auckland.

Never had much time for Corica or McFlynn before. Time to start the rivalry and dig up the clip of Joel Griffiths with ‘But all the fouls were coming from Sydney FC.’ as Corica blusters.  Both are Bling FCers and I hope the Nix can ride high and send both away from Auckland with their tails between their legs.

well a cV shows as much history as you chosse to show, his record may well be winning as in he has won more games than lost, but his recent history isnt flash. He may well have been able to explain that away and his new employers were ok with a slump.
Terry McFlynn being involved early almost guaranteed Corica was going to be in the mix. I suspect Greenacre will be looking at the assistant coach role with the mens team. He's done it before and is probably looking to get into the aleague fore real and not just focussing on the youth.

Why should Greenie tell them to stick it and how do you know he is going on the cheap? At this stage it is also speculation that he is going to be the assistant coach...he may well have another role? Greenie was outstanding as the Reserves Coach.....took them to a 4th and 2nd place finish in CL with a really young side. Everyone is talking up Temple, but best he could do as the Reserves Coach was regular bottom half of the table finishes with players such as Old, van Hattum, Bidois, Ott, Surman, Toomey, Paulson, Mogg, Hamilton etc. Nix did themselves no favors by cutting off his legs during the NL Campaign....and I believe this was the final straw that broke the camel's back. One understands that being a reserve team coach is an unenviable task, but what is the point in having an Academy if the Reserve Team coach is not consulted at all about the team he is supposed to be coaching! He was forced to field players that he did not rate, and it almost seemed as though he was being set up to fail. I could be wrong, but in the fullness of time I believe the Club will rue letting him go!

Coria saying the right things. That word community gain. He did win two ALM Grand Finals as head coach, not one. Plus got SFC into another GF as gaffer. One of the better ALM coaching CVs going around.

I just want his first 09 squad containing more Kiwis, than Aussie journeymen. Makes sense for Greeny to be based up north closer to Albany if he's to become the next NZ U20s coach.

https://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/football/a-league/133489639/former-sydney-fc-boss-steve-corica-first-coach-of-auckland-aleague-men-team

In a statement, Corica said he was “really excited” about joining the new Auckland club, backed by American billionaire Bill Foley, who heads the Black Knight Football group that also owns English Premier League club Bournemouth and has a stake in French Ligue Un club FC Lorient.

“It has all the ingredients needed to succeed, both on the pitch and in the community.

“We want to build a club that is known for its attacking and entertaining style of football and Aucklanders are proud to call their own.”

Corica said Foley was “passionate about creating pathways for young talented Kiwis to firstly succeed in the A-League and then go overseas with the other clubs in the group.

“It’s a fantastic opportunity for everyone involved.”

Now they have a men’s head coach as well, they will set about assembling a squad, with their first pre-season set to begin next July.

Players coming off contract at the end of the current A-League season can be spoken to by other clubs – such as Auckland – from January 1.

Incumbent Phoenix reserves coach Chris Greenacre is believed to have been in the running for the Auckland job before missing out to Corica.

He is understood to be in NZ Football’s sights to be their new national under-20 men’s coach in the lead-up to the 2025 FIFA Under-20 World Cup.

Corica should easily be able to form a relationship with All Whites coach Darren Bazeley, as the two were team-mates at Walsall in England.

Ryan Grant as inaugural captain and Bobo as first import, with Alex Brosque as attack coach.

EDIT:But being fair Buffy, I don’t like Corica or McFlynn. To me these guys embody the Sydney-centric game that existed for so long. Actually last year with the GF debacle. None of them particularly backed the Nix when there were license threats or anything. I can’t think of their links to NZ football.  I’d rather have Hay or Horse or Alex Smith or Ross Aloisi or Des or anyone with a bit of a connection here…

But as far as pantomime villains, two from two so far!
