Genuinely, and this is my personal opinion, I think it's really uninspiring. Who is proud to be associated with a port (with the possible exception of port workers I guess)? It isn't like Auckland FC is a team that was started by shipyard workers or anything. Auckland is far from the only place with a port.

Yellow Fever on the other hand has a nod to the colour of the team, and is also funny and recognisable (due to the other meanings). And you know a group is passionate if they've got any sort of fever. It's just a good name for a group of supporters.

The Port is just dull, to me. I wish for your own sakes you came up with a better name. But hey if you and your friends like the name, great.

That's not paywalled at all? To summarise: "rugby is freakin' boring these days. League is all right. Cricket is fun when India's in town. So Nix vs AKLFC might bring excitement back to sport, all good. That pitch invader was a dumb move though."

100% this will happen. The derbies will be unlike anything seen in NZ sport before. Though AFC need to work on that Supporters group, and surely they can sort out standing areas at Mt Smart, and let all fans know where they are. You have everyone seated at the derbies in Penrose, and the atmosphere will be diluted.

Oh and cricket is also fun when England and the Barmy Army are in town.

does the name the Port have any connection to Port FC in Bangkok?
there is a kiwi connection in Kane Vincent did once play for them - although a friend of mine who is a Port supporter is still at a loss as to how he managed to get an international cap!

Sometimes! They play that same song over and over and over and get drunk.

Other fans are a little less organised, but often more colorful and fun!

At the end of the day, the name isn't all that important. Just get enough like minded supporters standing together and cheer on your team loudly. I'm really looking forward to the first Derby & having two sets of active fans making it a real occasion.

If the name sticks, you think will we ever see a group named Starboard in the opposite stand?

"The Port" is the only name I've seen for AKLFC active support which isn't either totally cringe, or a ripoff of YF.

You can piss an entire lifetime away arguing in circles around a name. Kudos to these guys for finding a flag to rally about. I assume that anyone else who thinks up a *better* name will use it, rally their own crew around it, and then the support groups can see who's more successful.
Dolores for the win 🔵⚫️🔵⚫️

Transfer bids start at $50 million and a promise to move either NHS closer to Albany station or the other way around…

I'm on Team "Bulldoze NHS and build a boutique stadium on the Shore". Of course I'm also on Team "Bulldoze Eden Park, waterfront stadium plus Test cricket at Western Springs or Victoria Park", but no-one listens to me there either.

And best wishes to the Port, but if I turn up to AKLFC games it will probably be with the embryonic "left-wing Ultras" crew

Ahem, I suggested test cricket in at vic park in another thread on here. Probably a rare instance where we both agree on something.

I didn't think the idea made sense until I saw that design with a stand down at the motorway overpass end. Now I'm sold. (The fact that my daughter plays for Grafton might have something to do with it too lol)

You have to laugh. Corica who grossly outstayed his welcome as Head Coach at Sydney and Danny Hay who has one college title to his name.

Even old Trumpy Foley is going to struggle to spend enough money to make that coaching team look competent.

Also, big shout out to the mods here having to clean up after Auckland 12 year olds pretending like their plastic club is any sort of rival.

Yeah but they were mostly 18-19 year olds at the time. Also Garbett wasn't there (he was only 16 then).

Teams, Grand Final ES verus Team Wellington.

We must have heard that 15-20 times from clubs since 1999 and the only club that has provided any actual pathway is Melbourne City.

Garbett played 8 minutes in one appearance for the senior Suburbs side  in that 18-19 season.  Strong is born the same year and got more appearances and minutes.

Re: Hay, part of being a good coach is being able to attract the right players and people around you.  You can say what you want about that Suburbs team and how they came to be at Madills Farm but a lot of those players have gone on and that season or two did not hurt them.

Curious about the name the port, the team has nothing to do with a port, having a port isn't unique to Auckland, it's not particularly associated with Auckland, Auckland is not even the main port in the country.

You get one chance to name your fan group, yellow fever isn't particularly amazing, and I'd imagine if it was created now the name would be different, but at least it references the city and team colours.

At least you're not called original style I suppose.

Bit surprised any AFC fan group isn’t pouncing on something Knighty to keep in with Foleys Black Knights moniker.

All I’ve seen so far is splinter groups pushing their own little exclusive circles.  You need something the wider fandom. Not to pick on The Port particularly, but who is going to jump at the chance to sign up for that? Ex Wharfies maybe?  There is just no relation to the club.

Branding is powerful. Come up with something that will tie back to the club somehow and have meaning.

Friday Knights. - that’s when you drum up the excitement to get fans keyed for Saturday’s game

One Knight. - could call the fan zone One Knight Stand.  And implies unity.

The Armoury - knight related and implies both attack and defence.

I thought Baiter must have died. First posts for awhile.
Time (age) certainly hasn't mellowed him.

Declan being Declan he wouldn't have let Hay near his precious young Ole charges, if he didn't rate Danny as a coach. Even if the Mad Hatter was at every ES training that 18/19 season. Edge was often reluctant for his players to play for NZ age group teams, if he openly didn't rate the relevant national team coaches!

Yep, all shark names. Although I don't know the history behind either of them.

I've got family who are heavily involved with the Wharfies union, to me Ports are always going to be associated with Rugby League.

Isn't The Shed named after the stand (I guess it's nickname maybe) they are based in?

And I'm guessing there are a bunch of Coves in Sydney Harbour?

And someone once suggested Lemon Power as an alt name for the Fever.

I have seen a reference to the "Black Squires" for the Reserves side, the equivalent of the WeeNix.  These two teams are guaranteed to play each other once a season in the National League and I'd foresee one or two extra games between them  might be arranged for Dec/Jan/Feb.

The analogy could be extended to "The Peasants" and "The Serfs" for the supporters
