Terrible run of luck for the club. They were looking so good under Aloisi who had them playing really enjoyable attacking footy, then he leaves, injuries galore and now as they are trying to bed in a new coach the poor bugger has to depart too. 

Of course my sympathy for them will be on hold for two hours tomorrow but it would be good if Zadkovich, who did a surprisingly good job at Perth, and Marco can put a bit of zing back into their season.

Patafa trying to turn it around slowly. They crowds must have got really bad at Redcliffe, because they seem to have only been around 3-5K this season at cavernous Suncorp.

Another club paring back it's expenses (namely player wages budget) it seems to ensure long term survival.

You can’t always see the work that’s going on now to improve things down the line. 

The same can be true of what we are doing on the executive. We were vocal last year about the straits the club was in, but in the time since we have cleared a significant amount of the club’s debt, including the payment of all previously pending legal settlements. As a result the club’s financial performance in FY2023/24 is better than eight of the last nine years, and puts us on a very sound footing for next year.

That stuff isn’t as exciting as, say, the signing of a marquee player, but it’s actually the basis of everything. And what really gratifies us is we feel like the fans believe in what we’re trying to do. You’re backing us, to the tune of more than 8300 members this season compared with 3374 in 22/23 and 3588 in 21/22. 

Crowds for the men’s team are up nearly half – for the women’s team by more than double. Our ticket revenue for the men is also up by half. Only one other club had a bigger Liberty Pass membership than us this season.


More broadly we have a four-year plan to take our club towards greater success and complete sustainability, which we intend to talk more about in coming days. That fills me with confidence. 

But then I see Sharn Freier make her debut for the Matildas a few days ago and that fills me with excitement. We have national team representation right across the club, especially in the youth teams. 

The talent is there. The fans are there. Step by step, we feel we’re getting there in rejuvenating Brisbane Roar. Thanks for your support.

Doesn't seem like Perry Park is gonna get the upgrade for the Olympics that Roar fans had hoped.

That is a shame. The crowds at Suncorp for the Roar these days are pitiful, and there is no real atmosphere in a mostly empty 50K ground.

Michael Valkanis has had a couple interim gigs but can't say I was impressed, dunno if that would be a good appointment tbh. If I was the Roar, I would go for Rob Stanton.

Brisbane Roar announce departure of Ruben Zadkovich

Brisbane Roar and head coach Ruben Zadkovich have mutually agreed to part ways at the conclusion of their 2024-25 Isuzu UTE A-League season.

Zadkovich departs after the Roar finished second from bottom, despite ending the campaign on a four-match unbeaten streak.

The 38-year-old had been at the helm on a full-time basis since April last year, having initially stepped in for Ben Cahn in an interim capacity in 2023-24 as Brisbane finished ninth.

A formal announcement and press conference with the new Roar head coach and his supporting staff is planned for the coming days.

Valkanis has put together an extraordinary CV since leaving Australian shores in 2017 after the former Reds captain was a caretaker coach in Adelaide prior to his stint with Melbourne City.

He worked as an assistant at PEC Zwolle in the Dutch Eredivisie before joining the Greece national team as John Van’t Schip’s number two for two years prior to a brief stint in Belgium, where he took charge of KAS Eupen and helped the club avoid relegation in 2022.

Then he was the first Australian to coach in the Israeli Premier League after his appointment at Hapoel Tel Aviv but the war in the Middle East prompted an end to his tenure just three months in back in October 2023.

After that, Valkanis followed Van’t Schip to Dutch powerhouse Ajax.

Not only did Valkanis become the first Aussie to work as an assistant at Ajax, he became the first Australian to coach the four-time European champions after deputising for two games in the absence of Van’t Schip.

In September last year, Valkanis departed Turkish top-flight side Adana Demirspor, having gone head-to-head with Jose Mourinho.

The Broncos probably have their taxes in order. They receive over $20M per season from the NRL, sometimes sell out 50k Suncorp in the regular season and have a massive following in QLD.

In a different stratosphere to The Roar.

suncorp is such a shark place to play football. Had by far the worst rating by the pfa (the players) for pitch quality and atmosphere.
