Fair enough, but seems a little odd when they telecast Super Rugby games from Fiji to standard.

Anyway I was more speculating about a friendly(ies) like the Mariners are doing in Vanuatu. The Fiji national team (almost all domestic based players) would give the Nix a decent hitout.

i recall that the super rugby quality was not as good as they hoped and that's what stopped the Phoenix.
and on the second point https://wellingtonphoenix.com/news/phoenix-spreads-its-wings-fiji
Cheers don't remember that 2015 trip to Fiji at all. But yeah followed Nix less then.

Shame they haven't done it again since. I guess there is a cost flying & accommodating a squad.

This report says they got about 12,000 to the first game, a 2-1 win for the Nix. Helped I guess by local hero Roy playing for Fiji (got their goal). 2nd game a 2-2 draw.

Threaten to take more games to Auckland to alienate your core base and that will bring fans in.

Nick Montgomery said in the press conference that the Phoenix are a very well resourced club and to just look at our players, insinuating that we're out spending the mariners. If they're losing 2 million with concessions and cheaper stadiums and facilities we must be losing an absolute fortune.

Nix may have a good leasse deal on that new Hutt training facility. But they have a ALW team adding to the Expenses column, CCM as yet don't have one.

I'm glad they did, I get to see both squads training when not at work. And to be honest, the facilities are absolutely outstanding. The club may lose money at this move BUT the improvement in the players with the correct facilities will serve them very well in the long term.

That's a damn well written email.  Seems like they need similar numbers to us with a roughly similar local population to us.

it's a very similar email to the ones Dome has sent in the past, except maybe the lack of assets. I'm assuming that the Nix have a share in the facilities in Upper Hutt, along with the 'Canes and Institute of Sport. Note the mention of a need to get a certain number of fans each home game to make this club viable (8000) and "we make a $2m loos every season, despite developing and selling young stars (which has been CCM's model for years). Nix have been developing young players but only really started making money from them since I guess Libby and Singh. Our owners would be "losing" a lot more than $2m per season with both a men's, women's and the youth teams being funded from their pockets. You can guarantee that the funding gained from sponsors barely covers that cost, and the home games arent making profits.

Wilkshire got a head coaching gig lined up?
Previously head coach at Wollongong Wolves?

He's been a Aussie football TV pundit sometimes. Speaks pretty well.
Coached in the NPL, now age group Mariners & Australia.

If Talay does leave at season end, Wilkshire is the sort of guy could make a good Nix replacement. Seems to go alright (certainly initially) when the Nix give a young Aussie their first ALM coaching gig. Sure Rudan left under a big cloud, but results wise his first & only season at the Nix was a success.

Be very tough for a new coach to come in with limited budget and a squad that is set up from last season.

Promotion from within - keep the same systems going?

CCM production line continues : )

Any players left in his squad he might try to take with him?

Mariners legend John Hutchinson has some strong coaching creds now. Currently an assistant manager with J1 club Yokohama FC.

But yes going to be an even tougher ask now for CCM to repeat last season's success.

How would Storm Roux go in the SPL?

Wouldn't be silly of Newcastle United to terminate Garang Kuol's loan deal with Hearts and send him across town to a Montgomery coached Hibs. Kuol struggling a bit in Scotland.

Edit - scatch that. See that Kuol is now with Volendam in Holland.

Surely CCM ran a profit this year given all their players being signed and his coach.

Will also be interesting to see what add ons they have to training payouts the get in the future with all their youngsters moving around. All it takes is 1 big transfer out of the lot and their whole financial situation changes.
