Ian Ferguson sacked as Perth Glory coach

The Perth Glory's dire run of A-League form appears to have claimed the scalp  of coach Ian Ferguson, who has reportedly been sacked with his team at the  bottom of the ladder.

The Glory, which made last year's grand final under Ferguson's leadership,  has lost its past four games to fall to the foot of the table with only 19  points from 20 games.

Glory owner Tony Sage has called a press conference for 11am at which he is  expected to announce Ferguson's departure.

"Ian Ferguson has been sacked Alistair Edwards new Glory coach," Radio 6PR  and Channel Nine reporter Peter Vlahos tweeted on Monday morning.

Mining magnate Sage, who has reportedly been afflicted with a heart issue in  recent weeks, has recently returned from overseas.

Ferguson's expected departure will follow the resignation of chief executive  Paul Kelly in early December.

- more to come

But Sage refuted Ferguson's weekend claims that Glory were being underfunded this season.

"I don't agree with that," said Sage. "He had the full support of finances. He assembled his squad by June 30. That squad cost $3.2 million. The salary cap is $2.5 million, so I can't understand a comment like that.

"I take that as a slight on the club. We are $700,000 more. If you go to at least five clubs, they pay underneath the salary cap, and we were $700,000 over the salary cap.

Smeltz is an international marquee and they have no Aussie marquee, so guessing that 700k over the cap is all him.

Not the same ego's as the Culina's tho. Cam Edwards is an interesting one, very similar history to Rogic. Nike academy, spell at Reading but didn't seem to get a look in at the Heart last season.

Perth Glory is delighted to announce the signing of 19-year-old rising star Jamie Maclaren.
The gifted attacker was one of Australia's stand-outs during last month's Under-20 FIFA World Cup, scoring a stunning goal against Turkey and having opted to end his four-year spell with English club Blackburn Rovers, rejected overtures from a host of top European and Australian clubs to pen a three-year deal with Glory.

Sounds like he can play wider or in behind?
Do you know much of him from Blackburn RR?

I know for Aussie they fit him in with Taggart so not sure if that means he was wide if they had a front 2

Never see much said about the u21's but he was one of main goal scorers. Sounds like a few people were surprised he was let go.

Soccer club Perth Glory has dumped its fast food and soft drink sponsorship in exchange for $500,000 in taxpayers' money to promote anti-obesity messages.

The deal, due to be announced today, will result in the team getting up to $250,000 a year in the 2013-14 and 2014-15 A-League seasons from State Government-funded Healthway to advertise the Heart Foundation's LiveLighter campaign.

It follows a seven-year hiatus when Glory missed out on Healthway money it had previously received because it started being sponsored by fast-food chain Chicken Treat and Schweppes soft drink Solo.

Under the deal, Perth Glory will forgo sponsorship promoting junk food or alcohol and its continuing agreement with Schweppes can only promote bottled water.

The team's players will carry the LiveLighter message on the back of their shirts and advertise it through stadium signs, promotions at two home games, plus logos on all marketing material.

The anti-fat message will also be marketed through its Youth League team.

Wonder how that will go down with the A League and their Solo sponsorship.

I don't think Solo are sponsors anymore. Not on Nix shorts last year IIRC

Its only a matter of about 12hrs isn't it? Really shocking that a compromise can't be reached.

Yeah really bizarre. You would think they would try harder to keep their relationships with their tennants healthy.

Unless PG have already somehow stuffed that relationship. That could explain it, maybe Nathan Burns had something to do with it.

Fixed

Perth had issues with the ground last season with the upgrade. Maybe there are still some unresolved issues from that.
