I may have to eat my words about Talay stuffing up the recruitment. Could it have been that filling up on forwards and leaving a hole in defence was because he foresaw selling Waineo at some point? If so, and we get a solid CB this window, I will self-criticise in full Maoist fashion.

It's the best way to be wrong though.

I'm always too optimistic so when I am wrong it's gutting.  At least being a bit pessimistic and then it goes well means that you're wrong but your team is good.

No idea if the Waine thing was Talay being a strategic genius or total luck.  But I'll take it either way.  You do have to figure that a young player like Waine always had Europe on the cards though.

The coach of Plymouth Argyle was saying that he thought Waine wasn't being played at the Phoenix because of the upcoming transfer so conversations must have still been serious from the failed attempt during the offseason.

Dome has recently done a FIFA football manager type course. His big learning, ALM clubs sell players to Europe too cheap. So don't be surprised if there are more instances where the Nix at first, reject the initial offer for a young player.

Its probably Ufuk. The A league social media has been going on and on about how our recruitment has been such as success. They're probably hyping up for the episode.

A player changing clubs mid season is one thing, but a coach to another team in the same league isn't right (if he's off to Sydney).

Edit, talking about Yorke here if that isn't clear.

So Uffie has missed out on the All Whites job and his Nix contract expires end of season.

Question becomes now will he renew? Or pursue opportunities elsewhere, and if so where? Certainly other ALM clubs may be circling.

Defo wanted Uffie to get the job but one thing that I guess would've made it hard seeing him get it would be down the line in a couple of years if he got a European club offer. He'd have to leave both jobs putting NZF in a sticky situation preparing for the world cup. Unless Uffie getting the All-Whites job was pretty much him dedicating to staying with the Nix till the World Cup.

Wouldn't be surprised if he goes, wouldn't be surprised if he stays. Four years is a long time for any job, particularly a head coach role and there's always a need for change.

Trying to be optimistic - Uffie has been superb, but who knows who we could get in as a replacement - someone better?

To me, it feels like the Nix have really improved their image over the last few years. Better performances on the pitch, better training facilities, etc, etc. That has got to give us some pulling power.

I still hope Uffie stays, and I'm sure Welnix will put a big offer on the table to try and keep him. But if he gets a job in Europe he would fully deserve it, and I wouldn't blame him for going. If that is the case, I'd like to think we are well run, and ambitious enough to get a good replacement in.

Ufuk Talay got an interview on the back of pushes from certain sectors of the media.

1. They were never going to put an Aussie in charge.

2. Most certainly doesn't fulfill McKinnon Report recommendations.

3. Had to give him interview in order to not break down NZF/Phoenix relationship.

Hard pill to swallow for some (i will cop a fair bit from his supporters no doubt)....but let's take the blinkers off for a second.

Time to move on from appointments and let's support the teams!

I feel sorry for the nix management if this is now the end of Uffie, particularly if it’s down to stupid politics in NZF. I hope both Uffies leaving and stupid politics at NZF is wrong but this decision has all the hallmarks of jobs for the boys

Stupid politics in NZF? The Nix and Uffie are not and were never entitled for him to get the role, and they knew that. And it sounds like John Herdman is the prospective coach beyond March - would you really turn him down just so Uffie could stay at the Nix? Now that would be short-sighted.

Both would bring some very good things to the job.

As you can see there’s a lot of us who’ve enjoyed Uffie’s time at the Nix and would have really enjoyed seeing him grapple with a different challenge. A Nix/AW coach would create more interest from the media and casual fans imo.

On the other hand Herdman was great with the Ferns and has been very good in Canada. If we could get games regularly and produce good results with our better players playing, we’re guna generate interest. Getting to see a game live is something that sticks with you as a fan. (Perhaps unfortunately even more so when it’s meaningful like a playoff) If we can get fans to home games and see Libby and Sarpreet excel they’re guna be football fans for life. If it’s a regular thing several times a year, we may even start to cement a fan base and generate some revenue for the game.

Should the Nix ownership get some further assistance given their already generous contributions? That’s a different, but related question…

Absurd to suggest NZF wouldn't appoint an Aussie. We have had a number of Poms in charge. Schmid from Switzerland. Why not an Australian.

The no 1 problem with appointing Talay is he just wouldn't be focused on the job 100%, and you risk going backwards in the very important preparation & analysis space, for the AWs. Something that has come on in leaps & bounds since Ricki (as it should with a full time gaffer), but would likely regress with a part time coach, busy preparing his club team only a few days before the AWs play.

Plus then of course the large risk that what if Uffie no longer coaches the Nix some way through the WC cycle (2026 would see him being at the club 7 years, a lifetime in club football). What happens then?

Yep Nationality has nothing to do with it and anyone who puts nationality above competency in the coaching position is not thinking rationally. NZF will hire the best coach who's keen and they can afford.

Ufuk missed out because he's the least qualified candidate and the idea of him juggling the jobs, or sticking with the Nix for four more years, is absurd.

I'd imagine the pecking order of the four preferred candidates that we know about goes: Herdman, Buckingham, Talay, Beazely.

That's not to say Ufuk can't do the job, we all know he's a good coach, it's just the others are less risky.

I think the only real way I will be gutted is if Uffie goes to another A League club.

If he goes on to bigger and better things overseas then like our players, I will be sad but chuffed for him.

But god I hope we hold him for another couple of years.  At least next year if we can hold on to our squad.

Absurd you say? All Blacks wouldn't put an Aussie in charge. Neither will the All Whites. Think most fans wouldn't take to that.. apart from his club supporters that have a man crush.

His best bet it to do a Kevin Muscat - wiggle his way to a small European league then into Asia. end of.

All Blacks are totally different to All Whites, especially considering NZ rugby coaches are considered the best in the world. Our footballing coaches not so much, the AW's have had multiple international coaches so why would it suddenly be a thing?

It's absolutely absurd. Anyone who cars about the NZ / Australia rivalry that much is not rational. The rivalry is just a bit of a laugh, I doubt more than a few people with other personality disorders actually takes it that seriously.

If you look at fan sentiment across social media people seem absolutely behind Talay.
