Not sure how a game in ChCh relates to Canberra not getting their sh*t together in time to have an ALM side for next season?

New CHC stadium not ready for any possible third game in 24/25 season?

Maybe we should meet in the middle? https://www.taupodc.govt.nz/community/events/event-venues/owen-delany-park
Owen Delaney does suffer from being round, and as Domey would allude in the recent pod, Taupo won't have a big enough metro area to justify it.

I have thought though it would make a good pre-season location if arranged for same weekend as the annual Tom McCartney tournament. (and the season dates permit).  It would just take 1000 sausages and few bouncy castles behind one goal, and a beer and wine tent behind the other!.

Don't know if it's still the case but it was previously stated that the a league pays for teams to fly to the major cities within new Zealand, but the phoenix needs to cover additional travel. That might be chartering flights if capacity isn't available on the domestic network to places like Taupo

Here I was thinking there was some actual good news out of Australia. :-(

No surprise there, but at least that'll put an end to the constant "Expect an announcement within the next 2 weeks" that's been going on for the last 6 months or so

IMHO the APL should be doing everything it can to provide some positive football vibes on the fourth island. Things look pretty good in NZ but grim over there.

The A Leagues need sides from Canberra more then they need Western United and the Bulls (both teams should never have been brought in to the league).

If Canberra fails, you can kiss goodbye to the Gold Coast and Northern Queensland coming back and expansion in to Tassie, areas that actually need the A League.

Good to hear, sounds like we will only have to deal with a bye round for one season

I feel like everytime we get an update over the past year about this Canberra bid it's that it's all very close to being finalised.

Hopefully this time it actually is!

Yip. I won't be counting no chickens out of ACT until the eggs have actually hatched.

Have obviously written letters to Santa asking for a rich American or Arab sugar daddy.

“We’ve been good all year Santa, please please please bring us that sugar daddy we’ve always wanted”.

If they have an owner confirmed and the necessary big franchise fee paid by Christmas they will be fine for next season. It's more time than what Terry S & Ricki had in 2007.

Auckland FC didn't announce their first players until May 29th. But I imagine talking to players in the Jan window is important when starting to form a squad.

But other majors like a ground and top notch training facilities, are already all there in Canberra.

The January window coincides with the last 6 months of players contract. You really need to be talking to off contract players from Day 1 cuz you want to be able to choose from the quality options rather than the cast offs.

If they ever materialise in the men's league I think they should be called:

The Unicorns.

Although more chance of seeing a unicorn then a men's player from Canberra.

An article today from the Canberra Times - not really saying anything new other than the APL officially saying for the first time that Canberra won't be joining the ALM next season:

"Given it is now within eight months of the start of the 2025/26 A-League season, we have made the decision that any new men's A-League licence would enter the competition in the following season (2026/27)," an APL spokesperson told The Canberra Times.

Also the article mentions they are once again in discussions with Capital Football (who have again said they can't afford to keep running the team) to try and keep them running the Canberra United women's team for another season

So the annoying Bye FC will remain for next season.

At least will mean 3 derby matches again (playing 2 teams incl AFC thrice again, to get 26 games), and this time 2 derbies at the ROF you'd think.

Confirms that no Canberra for next season (Which we already pretty much knew) and that the Women's team should be all good for next season.

They have been talking to these 2 Canberra bids for months now right? We get a lot of updates saying everything's progressing well - except there never seems to be any actual progress

The hold up can only be money right? It needs a Foleyesque owner with bottomless pockets and commitment. Canberra nor the A League needs one of those lightweight owners like Terry, the WU and Brisbane or absolute tossers like the Mariners and Gold Coast had.

Without Terry I seriously doubt there would be a Wgtn Phoenix today. Someone had to take the risk and get the ball rolling.  Terry did that, whatever sins he should otherwise be guilty of.

I reckon most club owners world wide would fail a proper "fit and proper" test. The UK is full of scum owners at all levels of the game and I bet Eastern European, African, Asian and South American owners make them look like saints in comparison.

Some story in the Canberra Times about a new bid to enter the A-League launched by local club Canberra Olympic, by joining forces with Sydney Olympic... unfortunately the report is behind a pay wall so no more info from me.

This is the article without the paywall: https://archive.md/XKDBG

I think its a bit of a clickbait-y title as it seems to just be a partnership between Canberra Oympic and WSW to send kids from Canberra to WSW training camps as they don't know when the stalled bid to enter the men's A-League will eventuate
