I would think they would both have an influence, probably Set Pieces would be slightly more important.

Right, looking for some advice now on my youngsters. today I got myself a new Left Winger from my Youths, and wondering what the best way is to go about development? In the case of my young left back, he is just playing as he was already better than the replacements, my young centre back gets some time off the bench.

What is the best way to get your youngsters to develop?

Since its new, I'm still learning as well. Haven't really had the time to pay too close attention to it either.

From what I gather, the most important thing is not to keep training players in attributes that they have peaked in. Every player has a peak for every stat, after which they'll slow in improvement. So with this new training, you really need to keep an eye on attribute changes. At the moment I just chuck defenders into defence training etc, but keep an eye on things they need improvement in e.g DMs get switched around occasionally between technique and defence. But I don't really know what I'm doing.

Anyone else have a better idea of how exactly it works, and a good strategy to use in training players? I'd also be very interested to hear.

Yeah I'm not too sure what I'm doing either.  From what I can see on the forums and through chat it seems you do have to switch your players between different regimes a bit (although I haven't really bothered too much especially for defenders and forwards - just stuck them in the defence and finishing regime).  I think the training changes were supposed to make it easier, but I can't be bothered keeping tabs and the various attribute changes so it'll probably mean my players don't turn out as well.

I am trying the customise training with a guy who is going through bloom at the moment to see how he turns to - only a 3 star player though (don't want to ruin anyone too good).

What I don't understand is how (apart from running a spreadsheet or somethign and doing HEAPS of tracking and book keeping) you are supposed to identify when a player has peaked in a particular stat. I can see how by activating the graphs how you can see what they have done. But the graphs don't (easily) show you time in a granular enough way that you can make a call. all you can do is check the graphs and suddenly notice that someone hasn't gone up in something for a while... indicating that they peaked (ages ago) and then you can react by shifting their training... but by then you've wasted several weeks...

With my position and sponsor goals secure, I'm pondering playing the youth on Wednesday - I usually bring guys on for 10 minutes or so for routine, does giving them a whole game change anything? Or is it just the same 0.1 routine. Oh, and do suspensions get wiped in the off-season? I can't remember.

Nah length doesn't matter, its still just 0.1 routine as long as they play 5 (or 10?) minutes. I'm probably going to change things up for my last game a little too. Have set subs to the scoreline not mattering for now.

I don't think suspensions get wiped. Injuries go down by 3 games or so though. They usually give he details in the form of an announcement, probably sometime tonight.

I think it is something strange like 9 minutes - so basically 10 mins to get the 0.1 routine.  Yeah, I think suspensions stay the same but the yellow card count gets wiped so you start on 0 points again if the player wasn't suspended.

On that note, it actually just occurred to me to drop any player who is one yellow card away from a ban for the final game. Since picking up a yellow in this meaningless game would mean they're suspended for next season?

That's probably a good idea.  Unfortautnely I've got something to play for on this game, so I've got to go with all guns blazing (and hope NSU do the same).

Well looks highly likely I will finish the season 13th, 1 spot off sponsor goal. I scored enough goals with 52, the same number as the league champion, but they also conceded 52 goals less than me as my team conceded the second most in the league...OUCH, I think I need to look into my defence

Right, so time for me to ask for some assistance/help:

Last season my team started out with me knowing nothing and getting results, after 10 rounds we were in the top 5, then something happened and since the team has only won about 3 games total. I had made some changes to tactics, so tried reversing those, but to no avail. My squad in general is still the same sort of level, but I can't buy a trick. My team can score goals, but we just let in too many.

The squad has a bunch of 2.5-3 star players, I think 1 better than that. Have tried selling some of the lesser players, but I don't even get a bid. I do have nearly 50m in the bank at the moment.

So my questions are where do I go from here and what would you suggest as a way for me to work on getting the team performing better going forward. Any thoughts at all would be useful

Start with a really good keeper. 3.5 - 4.5 stars. Don't rush. Pay attention to the market, gauge how much they cost for what level, assess what you can afford and get the best you can afford.

Look at the teams you are playing against. Assess their midfield. Midfield has a significant affect on %age possession. If their midfield is weak, if your midfield is stronger you'll enjoy more posession... if their midfield is strong and yours is weak, you will be starved of possession. Consider playing one more midfielder (to 5) if they are strong to try and nullify them...

Check your strikers' abilities. If they are fast, play through balls... if they are tall and good headers, play wingers or long balls... if you can't tell play balanced.

Set up subs so that if you are losing at 65 (ish) mins you change something. If you are losing, and keep doing the same thing, you'll probably keep losing.

Other than that, yell at the screen more at crucial points of games. That helps. And/or buy better players.

yeah, that's what I'd do, with $50 mill in the bank you could easily pick up a 4* keeper.

no need to rush, there are plenty of good foreign keepers out there young too, which means you can spend time training up a kiwi

it can be frustrating, I've only got a 3* defence/keeper at the moment and they seen to do ok in stopping goals, your tactics can also influece it too, if your too attacking your likely to leak goals.

interestingly enough you ahve a similr team set up to me, your midfield is slightly less than mine but simila shape and defensive setup, it could just be the quality of opponent that your meeting.

It's just weird, scoring is not an issue, Eaton was third in the league in goals last season as I dropped to 14th.

Maybe I should try and go more defensive to balance out a bit.

I would definitely be trying to invest in youth or get some quality academy players, I had some early setbacks when forced to sell all my old players but it's definitely an excellent way in the long term, now my average squad age is about 22 and I don't have anybody retiring or deteriorating.

Also, I would play Doran in your defence, still a quality player and one who I think would free it up.

And don't be afraid to just cut players if selling them won't work, obviously you don't want wages to be too high so anybody around 2 star potential is easy to cut. I'd be looking to sell guys like Rood, H.Doran, Wilkes, McDonald etc, and getting any funds you can get to re-invest in younger players

Now watch as you crush me in the YF league....

Question for getting youth pulls, how many of you go for older talents? I usually go for normal as if they are good I can get them routine and some training pretty easily, but obviously it's enticing to have some late bloomers who would help the team more in the short-term by being say 2.5 stars instead of 1.5.

Interested to hear from some people who have been playing TM for a while on what path is best to take.

I usually just go with normal. Good training facilities means I figure I'm better at specifically training them in skills. I'm also unlikely to get a player that can start in my first team straight away if go for an older talent.

Normal also allows me to sell them quicker if they're a 3.5-4 potential, as opposed to a younger talent.

Anyone know exactly who captain works or what they actually affect?

As below from the in game help:

Help wrote:

Your captain should preferably be a player with a leader-personality, high professionalism, relatively low aggression and lots of routine. Most of these skills are hidden and you will only know them by thorough scouting of a player.

but does anyone know what it actually does?

No idea. I imagine it adds to consistency in some way, just like routine.

Also probably morale or something similar when the team is down, strong captain limits the negative "dropping of the heads" factor and makes it more likely that the team will fight back... also if leading in a tight game I imagine strong captaincy helps your team hang on more often than not - or more often than with a weak captain.

I used to have a captain that had high aggression and it basically meant that the whole team channelled their inner Roy Keane and started taking players out left, right and center.  Lots of cards.

Most likely a small stats boost/drop but overall not a big deal who I throw in there I guess if it is a bit of a coin toss on professionism/leadership.

At NT level it is considered a big deal, since a lot of the players are at a similar skill level, anything that gives an advantage helps a lot.

Am I doing something wrong. It seems like it takes AGES for my players to gain routine. Ages ago (a season and a half ago) I purchased Soren Kofoed  my star attacker. He had a routine of about 5.3 then. He played the rest of that season and all of this season, and he's up to a Routine of 9.9!!!

Should routine take this long to rise?

Tegal

It's 0.1 routine per game if they've played 10mins or more. 0.3 per competitive international. So yeah it takes a while.

I've probably asked this before but I've forgotten - how important is routine?

Say - 2.5 star player, routine of 14.3 against a 3 star player with a routine of 2.9. Who would you start?

Tegal
·

I think its a collective thing now. So a keeper, I'd definitely start the 2.5 guy. Any other position would probably depend on the rest of that section of the lineup, but normally I'd figure I had enough routine amongst my other defenders for example, and start the 3 star guy - figuring he'll only improve.

Its a tough one though. Think I remember a bit of discussion about it a bit further back in this thread.

Makes sense, thanks. I'm giving all my 3.5-4 star guys 10 minutes at the end of every match regardless of the score so I shouldn't have too many problems.
