Jesus, sometimes we find ways to fuck things up when it seems impossible. Guess we'll see.

Despite the club's ongoing pursuit of midfielder Michael McGlinchey, Merrick said he couldn't comment on that situation and noted they were still in the market for a top-quality striker with pace, sharp dribbling and the ability to get in behind defenders.

So not in the market for a midfielder or am I (I am) reading to much into this?

In another recent article he also said he wanted an attacking midfield (Wee Mac) to replace Carlos.

If we get Wee Mac, the visa spot will be used on a striker. If we don't get Wee Mac it will be used on the midfielder and he will have to look local for the striker.

I am hopeful that the quote means the Wee Mac thing is still very much alive.

I think Ernie is comes across very well in the press. He doesn't talk shit, is pretty straight up and is actually a decent listen. I must admit he gets extra kudos for the way he is dealing with Ifills situation in the media. Basically allows him to keep his dignity which for a well loved Phoenix player, is a good thing.

Gave away Ifill's No. 8 to Gorrin.

Yeah I know but he also said that the door is open for him once he has recovered and not 'we gave away his shirt and he is done'

JV,  do you  really believe that Ifill will make a comeback?  Unfortunately I just can't see it.

To be honest I don't think so either.

I am however hopeful for him because he is a likeable chap and was our best ever. No one wanted to see his career end like this. If he gets back on the pitch somehow then you know we are better team with him because he has that ability to change a game even in only 20mins.

Random guy walked up to me in the street walking back from FOur Kings for the England v Uruguay game (I had a Nix Away shirt on).

He said, have you heard the rumour, Ernie is talking to [insert a name here that I didn't quite catch, unfortunately - it could have been John Ngoa, or somethign similar, but was definitely John something???]

The bloke said the guy is off contract so he is a free agent. He mentioned he was 25.

I think he said something about ex-Arsenal youth.

So, based on that VERY sketchy information, has anyone heard anything that sounds remotely similar to this?

I would doubt we would use our last spot on a defender.

4 roster spots left, I can see it being 1 striker, 2 midfielders & 1 project player. Very unlikely to pick up another defender.

Exactly. So I can see us getting 3 Centre backs and a twelve year old.

Signed an average import from an ASB Premiership club? Sounds about right. No doubt he'll light up the league too.

So long as the 1w year old is vaguely related to the Rufers as apparently, they're the only family that can play football

Given we have the worst defence in the league, why shouldn't we use an import spot on a defender?

We need more experienced Aussies in the side. No import spot.

We also lost our 2 top scorers since last season though. And our defense was actually good when it was at full strength. Given the amount of different combinations that were forced on by injury the players shouldn't take all the blame. Having Riera back screening in front will definitely help too.

Although I am concerned about our lack of pace in the 2 first-choice CBs. If we want to press high up the pitch that's a worry. Maybe Boxall will force one of them out though (assuming Fenton returns to RB and Muscat is at LB, which seems to be his best position these days).

Assuming Cunningham and Weemac in midfield we don't have the space for Fenton there.

Cunningham played as a winger. Midfield will be Riera, McGlinchey and Gorrin.

also played more centrally

Ernie said in the paper he'd be playing as a winger this season.

First I've heard of any striker, unless your referring to bwtcf's encounter at the Four Kings?

We know he can score goals from 2 feet with no one in  front of him but...

Seriously, who's idea was it to put him in defence? It just doesn't make sense to me that we take our most promising up and coming winger and put him at right back. We are a football club and if we need a new right back then we should sign a new right back.

I believe that was Ricki. Or at least it first happened under Ricki. I really hoped that his first goal against Sydney was the start of more to come.

Ernie was the first to put him at RB, he thinks he can shape him into a very capable RB. Lets not forget that he has had a couple very good games at RB. Yes. he has his defensive problems but the same can be said about Roux.

Yup, and last season we didn't even play a system that had wingers. I think this season we'll probably play a 4-2-3-1/4-3-3 with our attacking wide players some combination of Cunningham, Boyd, Brockie, and Krishna (with Riera, Gorrin, and WeeMac in the central midfield roles and our new import striker up front). Fenton seemed to be growing into the RB role so I've got no problem with him going back there this  season rather than competing for a winger role with 4 other players.

I was thinking more about him as an attacking player. I felt he was excellent and offered good options when up near the front and not having to start the run from way back in the defensive line. Boxall is doing alright back there and if need be, sign a proper right back. I just dont want to see Fentons obvious skills go to waste.
