Cassio released from Adelaide. Is he still an import?

He's on Newcastle Jest's radar at moment

Daniel Mullen wants out of the Wandertards. Centreback who can play at Right Back too. Good squad cover?

Surely now is the time to make a play for some of these players though (but not Cassio btw). For the first time in ages our club won't be looking like a 2nd choice to someone like the jest. That is if you want to play in a happy team playing good football with good coaching and a better than not chance at making the playoffs. Then again if your wife is only interested in sunny weather and shopping we're still stuffed.

Late Christmas wish - rojas on loan for the rest of the season.

(If he doesn't go some where in Spain,  Belgium or somewhere else)

I have an amazing ability to find my way out of mazes. I'm pathological.

Certainly a good option as a cover for Fenton - but I thought that for this position we already have Boxall who is much like Mullen, perhaps just less experienced.

Actually, getting outplayed quite a bit these days

Rumours about Appiah-Kubi being on the outer at WSW, tho he denied on twitter that he is leaving. Given he is eligible for NZ, would you take a gamble on him as a Brockie replacement?

Permalink Permalink

I have never seen him do anything in any game he has ever played. I can't see him cracking our starting line up so I don't know why we would try to sign him.

quick wide forward, suits our style of play. Not sure if a priority,  might depend on what happens with Boyd's contract - assume he can negotiate with other teams 6 months out from his contract with us ending.

I would like better ofc but if we are not gonna sign any one, looking at him in person for 6 months might be better than just chucking a contract to a Wee Nix kid.

So Ernie has stated he will be looking to recruit a striker and a back (can't recall if he said full back, centre back or ?).

Just dusting off the previous discussion on Kiwis / Australians (if any) playing for AFC - given we have no import spots available.

In the opinion of those who've had a decent chance to watch AFC any possibilities that could fit Ernie's wish list. If there were I can't see why we wouldn't bring them in this transfer window or on a loan at least - check them out before committing to a longer term contract.

He dribbles a lot and the opposition dont like it - you can see it all over their faces. (Ron Atkinson)

Don't think anyone from Auckland really fits, to be honest. Maybe De Vries if Cunningham goes.

Ernie has said he is unlikely to bring in anyone, so either he is playing his cards close to his chest or the targets mentioned are for next season.

Would signing Franjic be a game changer for us?

We have the cap space, and could really use an upgrade on Fenton.

You would think he would prefer Brisbane, but why not come to a title contender playing in a style that would really suit him.

Would take him in a heart beat. Fullbacks are the most obvious place for us to upgrade to get better.

Think he would improve us immensely personally. Merrick obviously likes at least one fullback to attack, and despite Manny's Messi-esque performance against Brisbane he's a better defender than attacker. Fenton isn't quite up to it for mine as a defensive player; not his fault though, as he has been shoe horned in there - and he's doing an okay job, just not amazing.

With Brisbane confirming Polenz deal, you'd hope we are making a play for him. We have the cap space for him, and he has stated he wants to play A-League after asian cup

Wrong side, Franjic would replace Fenton

Franjic is Australia so no problems there.

I thought Burnsy had to occupy a foreign spot etc. if that's not the case lets get Franjic

Australians do not count as foreign spots for the Phoenix.

Yep. That is one of the oddities of us playing in the 'wrong' confederation.

Kosta is counted as a foreigner in MV but Burnsy is a local.

So Ernie's said he's not targeting a signing this transfer window - he's also said he keeps a constant eye out for opportunities, or words to that effect. His stated recruitment targets are a striker and a back.

I'm guessing he's keeping his powder dry on the striker recruitment until an import spot is freed up to significantly increase his options i.e. next off season. He'll also have more $s to spend at that time with Brockie's full salary and a portion of the released import's salary.

A back should be quite a bit cheaper and may be able to paid for with a couple of other released player salaries and a portion of the released imports salary

All this assumes the FFA's planned reduction in the number of imports doesn't go ahead. Recruiting a decent imported striker would also probably require confirmation of our licence extension - we'd both (us and the striker) want more than a one year contract.

Other than a loan deal (e.g. Franjic) looks like being a deathly quiet transfer window for the Nix.

Isn't he looking for a centre back though? That sounds like long term plan (next season) as the signs at there that Sigmund may retire at the end of the season given given that he had retired from international football. He is getting on a bit and had always been more of physical passionate player rather than the intelligent kind who plays positionally. Not having a dig, I like Sigmund but he isn't the kind of cb that gets better with age.

Except he does seem to be getting better. As much as I think we need to start replacing Siggy and Dura I would be amazed if we found anyone as good.

You know we belong together...

Excuse me?

I'd lay down a suitcase full of donuts to a pound of shark that Siggy has in fact been gettign better EVERY year, and that this year he's gone stratospheric under Ernie and is in the form of his life!

Listening to the latest podcast with Domey it sounded like there is a possibility we could bring in someone in this window. He said something along the lines of 'we've got a couple of free spaces now, and we're watching over a few Australian/NZ players as Ernie always does. We won't be bring in 3+ players but we might bring in one if the right opportunity arises.'

Permalink Permalink

Yeah I think you'll find part of Sigmund's international retirement is down to him wanting to play more for the Phoenix (i.e. for longer), not less.

The only other reason seemed to be wanting to go out on his own terms instead of being dropped. Which is entirely reasonable imo and again no reason to suggest he'll automatically be hanging up his Phoenix boots anytime soon.

I hope you guys are right, I really do. I like Siggy and he has been outstanding this year and does continue to improve many aspects of his game but he is 33 coming 34 soon. His body is going to give some grief sooner or later. No doubt he's gotten more skillful over the years but he doesn't strike me as the age defying kind of player like Puyol or something, someone who's read of the game and positional awareness allows him to play well past his physical prime.

I just saw that he was off contract at the end of this season and retired from all whites and thought maybe h's planning on hanging up his boots. Who knows maybe he'll sign up for two more seasons.

Do you guys really think he has more than another year in him?

He retired from the all whites to spend more time with his family. Something he can still do while playing with the phoenix. I think if Ernie brings someone in he may bring in someone from the weenix or asb. Just get them ready for if we need them.
