Anyone remember those days when people thought Clapham was the answer to our midfield problems?

Has Krishna been injured? He's easily got the best goal-scoring record in the squad (albeit at ASBP level) and proved last year he can be a handful for A League defenders. Given his 2 year contract Ernie presumably has faith in him too.

If he's only going to be a fringe player then it seems a waste of an import spot, and it raises questions about our level of planning regarding the length of contracts we offer (see also Jason Hicks). And if we sign Doyle why do we need both Caira and JBS? This squad still just seems unbalanced to me

Also, fair enough giving Brockie grief for not scoring but if we're going to be fair, surely Boyd should cop some flak too. If he wants to cement a role as a striker scoring some goals might help.

It was interesting that Ernie said that Ifill needn’t worry and “they would find a way” to play him if he were fit. Presumably that means shipping someone out. So where was Krishna on Saturday? Also, can we have Gameiro back now please?

I always felt that Gameiro was here begrudgingly as a fill in before he went to another A-League club. Almost like he had the contract signed at the other club, but just needed somewhere to play to fill in time. Perhaps the Nix helped Sydney out as a favour (Tony Pignata involvement perhaps)

You have to remember with some of our squad that they were last minute signings when Ernie arrived had like 8 players at training. Admittedly it would have been better to give those players shorter deals but you can't fault the recruitment this season. The only problems in the squad are really due to last season's desperate recruitment... And our lack of a golden boot contending striker.

Yeah, I've got no problem with Rufer or Ridenton being on 2 year contracts because they're U21. But Lia and Krishna both got longer contracts well into Ernie's reign, and JBS was re-signed in the off-season. None of which I have a problem with if we weren't looking for new players in those roles and at the same time not looking for a new goal scorer, or in Krishna's case seemingly not considering him as a first-choice option despite being an import on a 2 year deal.

I always thought Gameiro was class but I agree that he would have been difficult to hold onto.

Agreed. It was clear from the start that he was simply here for the time being. While here he was a good player and a nice guy. But he never said he was even thinking of staying on, while being grateful for the opportunity.

Actually, getting outplayed quite a bit these days

The issue for me is that you want to introduce Ridenton and Rufer over the next couple of seasons but you have both Hicks and Lia between them and the first team.  If you want to develop young guys then you have to give them access to the first team. I think they didn't play on signing 2 overseas midfielders when they re-signed Lia but jumped on Roly when he came available.

I thought Brockie was a lot better than last year. He worked a lot harder and constantly caused Newcastle problems. He did miss chances but I am convinced goals will come if he keeps playing like that.

I was one who thought that Brockie's problem was his work rate.  I've changed my mind now, the big issue is that he misses far too many easy chances.  If he scored half the chances he gets he could basically do bugger all and he'd still be useful.  But last year and this he missed straight forward opportunities to put us ahead time and time again.

He's just not clinical enough, he may stick em away in training but that's just not the same as game situation.

I thought it was a Ricki style idea? I may well be wrong. It was an experiment that hasn't worked and set him back a season. Mannh is fine there.

Was Ernies idea. He did look rather good there in a few games but horrible in others. If he didnt have that shoulder issue, he might have progressed nicely in the role. But with the emergence of Doyle as a LB option, the need for him to develop into the RB role has disappeared for the moment.

I feel very sorry for Louis Fenton and I think he's been screwed over personally.

Has a first year under Ricki when he was completely built up pre-season and then over played.

Then the next year when he should have been in a position to improve he gets shoved to right back, where to be honest he was pretty average playing out of position.  In the mean time Tyler Boyd, who looked much worse the season before, gets a load of minutes in the attacking area Fenton had played in the season before and improves a lot.

Fenton then ends up injured, comes back the next season, and suddenly this big plan to convert him to a right back has been abandoned after half a season.  And to make matters worse, the replacement at right back is a guy who was in the squad already and could have been switched there last year!!

I'd be tearing my hair out, this whole switch was sold as a long term thing and then someone better comes along and Fenton is suddenly a forward again.

Partly, but last year we took our best fullback and played him in midfield (where he isn't much good) then as a result moved another player to cover.  So we had 2 guys both playing out of position!

Anyway, I much prefer Fenton in attack, he's direct and I think he's a better goal scorer than Boyd so I hope he's left there and given plenty of opportunities to push on after 2 pretty tough years.  It's a cliche, but I think he can be "like a new signing" for us

He was progressing okay at fullback I thought until he got injured. He aint played a competitive game since, so lets give him a chance.

I hope he returns to the aggressive attacking winger

Fenton is limited on attack and will continue to be so if he does not learn how to get his head up.

He needs some work but the raw materials are all there.  That's why I don't think it was helpful that in his first season he started so many matches - he needed to be introduced slowly and get up to the level once he was ready.

Rukavytsya? Sounds like he's having trouble getting a contract overseas.

Much like Burns - never really fulfilled his promise; still probably better than Krishna and doesn't take up an import spot.

He was trailing in Israel because he married an Israeli lass. Thought he was close to getting signed by the club he was trialling with. Glory would probably have been interested otherwise, as he is a Perth boy.

No shit, that's where the new phenomenon of Israeli Nazis come from. Russian and Ukrainian skinheads who have just enough Jewish ancestry to get citizenship. There is no law against swastikas in Israel because they never thought they'd need one.

Israel is totally not a good place to visit. They should be boycotted like apartheid South Africa because they are at least as bad. But this isn't really the place for that debate so on the interest of staying on topic I'll leave it alone, all entitled to their own opinion regardless of how wrong I think they are etc.

Ruka is a poor finisher, has pace but not much else.

Would be surprised if we went for him as I'm not sure he offers anything substantial over Krishna.

It kind of sucks we've basically made all our signings so early... nothing to complain or dream about.

Probably because over 2000 rockets fired at them in the past few weeks.

Other than the fact that it gives Ernie the whole off season to get them fit and gelling together... but yeah I get what you're saying.

With some three civilians killed. The missile shield is very effective. Coming on 900 civilians or so in Gaza.
