The fact preseason has started and there has been NO solid rumours, leaks or speculation worries me quite a bit, I can see 2 youth's getting contracts but that still leaves how many places? Like 5 spots open and preseason has started???

Would you rather they conducted all recruitment negotiations in public?

To be fair, there is normally some kind of a rumour that pops up by now. Perhaps Ernie is just keeping a tighter ship.

No but even one reasonable signing up to now would give me some confidence the fact is there has not been any yet when other Club have been very active. I'm still hoping for the best as I have faith in the ernie magic but I hate long off seasons for this reason!!

Yeah, but a lot of the other teams have lost half of their squads. We have probably 2 - 3 spaces to fill, and only one of those is an import.

Burns completed his medical yesterday and is training with the team but he hasn't signed yet. Problems with his knee?

You have to assume that the club has known the very very high probability of Burns leaving for a long time and is well down the road of succession planning. Unfortunately, there are not that many Kiwis or Aussies with his skills available!

I see 5-6 player signings/movements from other a-league clubs weekly. None from ours except on leaving which was always on the cards anyway. I certainly hope there's loads happening in the board room. I would safely assume there is

Well we're going to get at least four more players right? And possibly one visa player.

We're hoping Rodriguez has had a good pre-season and McG's form turns it up a notch. (interesting A-Rod listed as a forward on the website, but that probably is ...)

We'll likely bring in some of the Wee-Nix...well, we have to bring in a minimum of 3 NZ/Aus players. Surely there has to be some better guesswork going on in the Fever?

Knew this would happen. Very sad to see him go - I just hope we got some serious cash for him. Very eager to hear of a good replacement being brought into the squad soon.

I dont think we will get much, didnt they say after year 1 he could leave for about $200k under the terms of his deal.

I would think that a high-profile player like Burns (Johnny Warren medal winner, current regular for Australia ,the Asian champs) would command a decent transfer fee - I'm thinking about one million $NZ minimum.

FC Tokyo are cashed-up after selling Japan international Yoshinoro Muto to Mainz for supposedly about 3 million Euros.

Like Burns he is a forward who likes to play out wide - so it's adirect replacement.

Also Ernie hints here that the transfer fee will be decent:

http://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/football/a-league/699...

While it would be a loss for the team, the transfer would fill the coffers as they search for an out-and-out goal-scorer.

"We've got an import spot and now we've got some money, so we might even go for two players but we've got to sign a key player out of those two and maybe a backup player."

This augurs well too:

Merrick said the team's form last season had made New Zealand's capital a more attractive option for overseas players.

"We have found that that has improved out of sight this off-season, judging by the number of agents talking to us about Australian players that want to come here as well as overseas players.

"Roly Bonevacia, Michael McGlinchey, Alex Rodriguez, all of a sudden people are realising the Phoenix are a well-organised team financially, with a stable board and building for the future after finishing fourth and reaching the top of the table."

Blake, McGary and Rogerson to get our youth contracts.

Gulley to miss out again just.... Has he ever tried Europe to get a gig?

I'd take Rukavitsa, he'd be affordable and could turn out like Burns.

SBS reported that it was a 300k minimum release clause.

Burns has been over there for a few days but they have yet to confirm the transfer, something holding it up maybe?

Rumours are that he turned down a 300k deal with Sydney because he wants more.

All very good prospects but incredibly young to all come in at the same time.

Blake is 1996 (18 /19 this year), McGarry and Rogerson 1998 (16/17 this year). Does anyone have the stats on how many minutes Ridenton and Rufer player last season?

True that. He looked alright from what I saw at the Hong Kong 7's, though hard to judge in that format obviously.

We have 3 contracts outside the salary cap for WeeNix players. Sail signed one of them, so wouldn't be surprised if McGarry/Rogerson/Singh are in contention for the other two places.
