Doloras - I often agree with the things you say and admire you for saying your piece but think you are off track here totally.  Im sure that NZ still has race based sports teams,  race based politicians.  Clean our own house before we preach to others

I see some here are  having a go at Mr Minto. I assume if they were rugby fans instead of football then they would have been applauding the 81 spring bok tour, throwing some bottles at protesters and praising Piggy Muldoon.

Many including Mandela said it made a difference.

Nothing wrong with Minto.

If someone has been nominated for an award for his contribution to bringing about Mandela's South Africa, and turned it down, they deserve to have their arguments listened to. I doubt anyone on here has been half as courageous as he has, though some of us are at least as stubborn and pigheaded.

I think it is misguided to target one player, though I can understand protesting a national team or a representative team.

I knew all these replies would be the same random shark, but I came and looked anyway. Shame on me.

Teams are symbols and are fair game. If you attempt to target individuals for the actions of their nation, you're on pretty thin ice.

Not all Israeli people agree with their government's bullshark.

WW2/Holocaust was 70 years ago, Israel-Palestine is ongoing.

My attitude to Israel-Palestine is pretty much the same as my attitude to South Africa in the 1980s and I would have thought the same thing about signing a South African professional back then. I didn't say blackball him or harass him, but I'd want him to answer some tough questions.

...and therefore, by extension of that logic, you'd be keen for any Kiwi footballer signed to answer some tough questions about the atrocities during the Maori Wars?

Or, if it has to be ongoing to qualify, you'd want any Australian footballer signed to answer some tough questions over the refugee detention camps including, but not limited to, on Nauru?

I think what puzzles some of us is (a) why a footballr should be held to account for all (or any for that matter) of the policies of the government of the country they are from (particularly if they are making their career playing abroad), and (b) why Israeli footballers in particular need to face tough questions when you are not compaigning for footballers from other countries with skeletons in the closet to face similar questions.

Not to mention the fact that we killed 22% of the entire Samoan population because we didn't quarantine a ship that had the flu virus in 1918.

Every country in the world has things that they have done wrong and should be ashamed about. To be fair to Deloras the Isreal and Palastine conflict is still very much current. And we have been doing a relatively equitable job of redressing past NZ atrocities.

Now back to football.

What I was saying above is the whole story of seeing Gai was probably bullshark, unless the hold up is we're attempting to negotiate him out of a contract he has another year at his spanish club and appears to be in pre season with them.

Agree.  We shot over 40  Japanese POW's   in 1942 in Featherston.

Wasn't aware of this from my NZ history. Really interesting reading up on it.

Fudgeing Japanese buying up all the Canadian and Chinese real estate in the Wairarapa...

No it's definitely the fudging Canadians buying up Waiarapa, right Mr Cameron?

He might be the Gai they are talking about. I heard Hebrews his own beer so would fit in with the craft beer scene here. Or course, that's if he isn't put off by the Rabbid political debate from fans.

Sorry for the Torahble puns ...

I see what jew did there.

Yes, New Zealand has done some hideous things in the past too, I'm glad everyone agrees on that, so I assume there will be no whining about protests next Waitangi day. And kudos to everyone who reminds us that that terrible John Minto was right in 1981.

p.s. This would be going too far - Jewish-Americans are not fair game IMHO, that's racist - but it's not just me.

Can I take yellowfever to court for false advertising contained in this thread title? I'm sure the advertising standards council would rule in my favour. Create another thread title - 'geopolitics & sport 101', 'minto & me' or something. Thanks.

Do off topic posts really annoy people that much? It's pretty easy to just glance at them, realise you don't care, and then move on isn't it? Its a transfer speculation thread anyway, if there was any concrete information it would be in the news or contracted player thread anyway.

The problem is you come to the website, see thirty or so unread posts and get excited that there must be an anouncement. Then you just read the same old shark

So what you're saying is that off topic posts like these bring a little ray of hope into the dull grey days of the off season? ;)

Seriously Ryan - if you see 30 odd posts in this thread, or in the U23 thread of ineligibility for example, and you actually get excited, sorry mate, you're either stupid, or a slow learner, or stupid and a slow learner. You've been around here long enough to know better.
