Well, my partner Claire had a look at that video and immediately pronounced that the Phoenix have to sign him "because he's gorgeous." She reckons she would go along to a game or two to see him play.

So that's definitive then.

What has got me fudgeed is, if Finkler signs, what the hell sort of chant could we have for him?

All those people babbling on about needing defenders I hate to say it but you are wrong. If we can score more goals than we concede chances are we will win a lot of matches!

Yeah thats fine but its been some time since we have been able to score more than we let in on a consistent basis. Frankly we just continued to leak goals for fun and have done for some time..

Needs some work?

GUI Finkler will depart Melbourne Victory at the end of the season to join A-League rivals Wellington Phoenix after accepting a lucrative marquee contract.

The Brazilian, who was distraught at being axed from the Asian Champions League for a second time, is believed to have signed a multi-year deal with the Kiwi club.

Hopefully its marquee wages in order to make room for other quality players, rather than us throwing a large cheque his way.

Does it matter if we're throwing a large cheque at him?

Plenty of people have whined that the WelNix won't spend enough, now we are complaining that they might be?

I want WelNix to throw big paychecks to get great players but I don't want them to spend big on great players.  I feel like that is a totally reasonable and thought out position that holds up under scrutiny.

I always worry about players of a certain age saying they are the fittest they have ever been, because obviously they are not. Carlos was supposed to be the fittest he's ever been when he arrived as well and although slim he looked lethargic and lazy.

Gui seems to have a better work ethic than Carlos however.

What I don't understand is why Muscat didn't pick starters in his Asian Cup Squad.

Finkler starts every match along with Khalid, but both aren't included??

He will be a solid player, but I don't think he will be the difference... we really need a strong CB or RB to round off the team.

3 +1 import rule for AFC champions league: 3 foreigners plus 1 x AFC player (kosta counts as one of the imports)

I couldn't care less how much money we're spending as long as we get the right players. I question whether Gui is the right player for us, but I guess time will tell.

Berisha, Kosta and Delpierre are all more important players to MV than either FBK (who has had a really poor season) or Finkler (who can't track back and has also had a poor season)

Personally I would've thought we would aim for a Keogh or Berisha type.

Have faith in Ernie chaps, he has a plan, and as long as he brings home the trophy next year I don't care who he signs.

Welcome Finkler, please be awesome in Wellington.

Ernie's priority must be to sort out the spine of the team. Assuming Finkler is coming, Roly is staying and Vinnie is leaving, our priorities must be 1) an experienced commanding CB who has composure and plays with both feet in their mid-late 20s and 2) a starting, naturally central, striker.

I really don't want to be converting natural midfielders into defenders (though I could imagine Rodriguez developing into a Mascherano type role over a few years), and given our abundance of attacking wide midfielders, is Rogerson's spot better utilised by Gulley at right back?

We need a RB more than we need a striker I think.

And as much as I rate A-Rod and think that he could technically cope with the switch to CB, I would prefer a faster player there.

I'd spend a bit more to get a great CB and starting central striker, over a RB. Gulley/Fenton will do better with a better ball playing CB alongside them.

A-Rod thinking would a long term project. He needs more games under his belt.

But I think there isn't room in the starting lineup for all our mids plus Kosta and Krishna, plus a gun striker. Ernie also showed that he's happy to play with two wide forwards and a false 9 last season and would only use a traditional striker as a plan B. I think between Watson and Powell our plan B is covered and I don't share  your faith in Fenton and Gulley. Fenton appeared to be regressing, is injury prone, and still plays better in a more advanced role, while Gulley is young and very inexperienced.

I feel like FB can be plugged by stop gaps but CB can't. If Fox or Dura goes down, we're screwed. It's likely Dura will be prone to more injuries next season, as he was this year.

We need at least one more experienced CB who is confident marshaling things - that isn't easy to find.

I also think that Ernie wants a striker like a Keogh but getting Gui is a more low-risk option as we don't want another Sarpong situation.

100% agreed, except for A-Rod turning into a snarling defensive midfielder/CB. Guy is far too nice.

I think that finding both these players will be nigh on impossible without an import spot however.

Ernie is leaning more towards an AM - 1:36 in and then again at 3:29

After reading some of the comments above, I am inclined to agree on the CB vs RB necessity.  I championed the RB cause, as I do not see Fenton replacing Muscat next year. Perhaps Gulley could grow into a Muscat role and has necessary toughness (from what I've seen so far) if not the experience, if we're not buying a new player.

Seeing Dura struggle against Perth (was possibly carrying a niggle already when Keogh scored) I have now realised that if Dura is impaired then a young CB like Fox would be paired up with.... who exactly?  A-Rod? Nonsense, they are both too young for that responsibility. Doyle? Maybe, but only if someone like Danaskos takes over his spot; but we would lose invaluable service on the left wing from Doyle.

A few interesting names there, I assume that talks are well underway for the better names on that list but still:

Nick Ansell

Zac Anderson

Michael Zullo

Dylan MacGowan (Sydney-bound?)

and has there been any talk of what was happening with Devante Clut? Was there a whisper he may be NZ eligible?

'Whether it be a striker or an attacking midfielder' - guess it just depended what came up, fair enough.

Sounds like he also considers Kosta an out and out striker. Not sure he scores enough goals for that, but with Krishna there too I suppose there could be enough goals.

Anderson and Ansell are very similar to Fox - both young defenders that are a little raw still; though they have slightly more A-League experience.

A-Rod isn't short. In fact, if Wikipedia is accurate (big if) then he's taller than Dura. He's definitely one of the taller members of our squad at least
