Let us remember that the other teams are buying young and very quick players. We need to be able to counter it.

If we are having to play Lia in the starting line up then we are in for another disappointing season. I know there are a number of  Lia fans on here but when he plays to his very best he is only adequate. There would have been no  other A League Club looking to sign him

Lia is not in the same class as Riera who did not have a great last season. Riera realised that he was not up to his usual standard and called it a  day. This left the door ajar for Lia and after much consideraton Ernie finally  opened it.

If Ernie didn't think Lia was up to being our holding midfielder, Lia wouldn't be our holding midfielder.

Ernie's not stupid.

Ernie also thought Sarpong could be our next Nathan Burns. People make mistakes, even experts.

But what, if I can play the Devils advocate, if playing A-Rod there is the mistake, which he is avoiding by playing Lia?

Ernie said we can't afford a goal scoring striker and so we have to throw the dice. He also said there was no pressure on Sarpong to be Burns. I'm sure he expected Sarpong to score a few, but he also expected Krishna to be fit, I doubt he expected Nathan burns mark 2.

Ok, people taking me too literally. I just meant that simply because he is the coach doesn't mean that everything he does is necessarily the best thing that could be done. The argument that he's doing it therefore it's the right thing to do is a logical fallacy.

For the record, I think that the balance of the type of players we have in midfield/winger/attacker roles is off and that's forcing us to play a system with only one DM, which doesn't really suit A-Rod or Lia. Would have liked to have seen us in a 4-2-3-1 but there's no way to do it well with the players we have

You're right, but I have enough faith in Ernie that he won't keep making the same mistake over and over and over. He showed with Sarpong that he wasn't afraid to admit he made a mistake, so why wouldn't he be doing that with Vinnie?

On the other hand he insisted on playing a narrow 4-2-2-2 with patient buildup play last season week after week despite the obvious issues it created in terms of our inability to break teams down and vulnerability to swift counter attacks.

Lets be real for a minute: Ernie has also only had one good season since being at the club. The other three have been varying degrees of bad to terrible.

Not all of his decisions are necessarily winners.

But look - if we had a better DM option than Lia, we would play them. We're obviously finding it difficult to attract players - especially top level Australians.

The cold hard fact is that if Lia is our starting DM - and seemingly our only viable option there - we will likely not progress.

he's only had three seasons here. His first was with Ricki's squad. Second season was excellent with only a few bad results at the end. Last season was derailed by license issues and injuries.

City said they were looking into it on Twitter to one of their fans. I've sent them a message asking if it will be streamed.

Finding out that Sarpong was a dud badly hurt our season though.

It took time to find that out and then we had spent a lot of our resources on him, plus we were short an attacking player.

Finding Riera made a real difference to our ability to play football and the defence's ability to stop the opposition scoring. Being without him wasn't the plan this year by all accounts.

I think we can all agree this is the make or break year for ernie.  He has had a full preseason and the backing financially of the owners. He is the coach and at some point excuses stop and result matter. I think that's this season.  If we suffer due to Lia being our starter that's on ernie and the coaching staff for not recruiting better.

I'm not saying good or bad about this year I'm waiting to see how it goes. I still trust in ernie but this is the year I would like to see results.

I would like to think so. Fox was ok but probably better as a cb. Gulley has speed but seems to be out of favour. There was a speedy rb for hawkes bay but I think he was an import from Japan. So if we can attract one.

I guess we could have 3 CBs and then not have to worry about a Right Back? The best traditions of Ricki. Play 3-5-2?

Bang on mate with your last few posts. We all respect Ernie but he does make mistakes - the system last year wasn't working post Xmas but he kept playing it all season. He already had the players he had by that point but he was fully in control of the style of play and seemed reluctant to change it.

In the WSW pre season game Lia was dribbled around on a number of occasions and Duras lack of pace was really exposed. We all said after that game that we need greater mobility in the spine of the team yet here we are a month out with players who are still playing at or near their best but the HAL is evolving and we have to evolve too.

Roly has to play as an 8 this year and go back to being a ball winner and distributer. He's not a 10 (again Ernie played him as one). Ernie needs to encourage Roly to pass and move quickly. Rolys touch and strength on the ball are fantastic but he dwelled on it too much last year. This year it's easy- drop back, help the DM (esp if Lia) and receive and then play Gui or WeeMac/Kosta in behind. Simple. No need to dribble past everyone.
