Also, MLS runs mostly in our off season. Would Kip Colvey work as a loanee at full back? Can he play RB?

Is he at the required level though.  Nothing against MLS but not sure he would cut it at A-League leve.

Worth a punt though. He's domestic and young, as well as a current international. Then again, other current internationals include Luka Prelevic and Luke Adams.

Also don't want to run the risk of burning him out over the off-season, like Brockie and Toronto

Fair point, but if his (from what I last heard) stellar performances trail off and he begins missing match day squads, then perhaps he would benefit from off season football. I'm not a pro, never have been and never will be, so I don't know how one would cope with that though.

Themi would be perfect. I guess it depends if he wants to move across the world.

Themi is playing regularly and has a leadership role at his club. He will be earning more money and living in a country where the cost of living isn't crazy.

NZ isn't that appealing... the cost of housing alone must put people off especially if they want to settle in for a few years.

Not sure about any of that. The Greek economy is in the toilet is it not? and I'm not sure an itinerant footballer would move to a new country and immediately want to buy a house, if ever.

I think the only kiwi professional defender who is off contract at the end of this season is Tommy Smith. I can't see him coming back to NZ. I'd happily take Themi, M Boxall, Musa, or even a post-injury Storm Roux but they're all locked in and I can't see WelNix forking out a transfer fee. Tuiloma might be the best bet because Marseille might terminate his contract.

Otherwise it's Aussies or an import for us. Unfortunately there don't seem to be many Aussie options around either

Smith is definitely good enough. And you know he wouldn't miss many games because of AWs commitments (as I think someone else said earlier on this thread)

Vinniesta listed as a contracted player, whilst Gulley, Danaskos, Rufer and Appiah have been left off.

We couldn't be a bad shout for him. Young (I think) defender going somewhere on the up that needs defenders.

Hopefully we keep Rufer. It would be a cruel end to his Phoenix (and, let's face it, professional) career.

I'd definitely take Donachie. If it's between us and Victory then hopefully the thought of having to be in a dressing room with Kevin Muscat will drive him into our arms

I've watched him a number of times this season including at Wembley on Monday where he was a late sub against The Argyle.  Too slow, would never play 90 minutes for us.  A cameo machine at best although a great bloke for a quote.

Two things interest me in this thread:

1) the young guns like Ridenton and Rufer etc. I assume these guys are over 20 now so we need to see more of them. They have been in the squad for a couple of years now with some decent minutes so now is the time we either play them or move on.

2) ASB Prem players. I still think we underestimate the local players. Mitchell signing in Serbia I guess highlights that both the Nix and to a lesser degree the AWs don't pick local players from the ASB (for the AWs you need to be u20) BUt suddenly they before an option when someone else says they are good enough...

Perhaps not Rufer after his injury but yes it is time for Ridenton to really step up and grab a place in the team starting. He has the ability but then like a certain pretend right back, he has not kicked on to make a difference.

A diamond midfield in front of Ridenton have been Riera, A Rod, Vinnie, WeeMac and Roly. That was always going to be hard to crack without major injuries. This year is his chance. Riera out, Finkler in, Vinnie a year older.

Rufer damn unlucky. What is the latest on him?

Legend

its going ti be very tough for Ridenton to crack into that midfield three/four though. Finkler, Weemac, Bonevacia, A Rod would surely be ahead of him. He'll be a bench player at the start and A Rod's early form will be his one chance next season (excluding injury)

Is there anything wrong with being a bench player in a professional environment?

If the starters are genuinely good players, no shame in coming off the bench to provide some late impact.

I don't need Ridenton to start, just contribute.

being stuck on the bench is why we lost Rojas and Kosta - along with training facilities. Not saying that Ridenton is in the same class as those two yet, but he could be. We just havent seen it from him - he could say it's down to lack of opportunities.

I'd like to see Ridenton genuinely pushing to start.

Some compared to Kosta and Marco and if he's pushing to start as much as they did, I'd be really happy.

If he can get a good contract in a good league  somewhere else on the back of quality work off the bench for the 'Nix, I also wouldn't be unhappy.

Different position. Rufer was playing as a DM where as Rogerson is a wide striker.

He is the most obvious Riera replacement floating around NZ, young DM and trained with the Nix under Ernie iirc.
