If that is true then we would need 3 defenders

McGlinchey played left wing for the whole of last season, Lia is getting old and it would be great to get a young guy in because the phoenix have a lot of older players. Rodriguez isn't even the beast of players and is not a CDM.

Who are these older players you speak of? Fenton is the third longest serving player at the club ffs. I count four players who are over thirty. Moss is a goal keeper so age isn't so much an issue, and Lia is unlikely to be plan A. So that leaves Durante and Finkler as the only starters over the age of 30.

Hardly teaming with older players.

ATM who else is going to play instead of Vince Lia?

And your true about moss

Rodriguez. But we simply do not have an old team and so leadership is required even at the expense of talent sometimes.

Surely we need a defensive mid to replace riera and rodriquez is not that guy

I think Rod is... when Riera was injured and Lia and Rod played for us centrally we competed better than what we had with Riera in recent times.

Riera was simply getting too slow. A Rod is young, mobile, technically sound and can pass off both feet. I fully expect him to start dominating this league in another year or two if he hangs around.

Ridenton can also step up I think.

If we signed Ryan De Vries were do you think he will fit in?

Competing with Watson for a bench position I would imagine.

I'm looking forward to Rodriguez making DM his own this season ...

Him and Fenton are getting to the point where they can't be considered only young squaddies anymore. As someone said Fenton is one of our longest serving players

Dark Chocolate Tim Tams FTW!

Oh and I concur about Ridenton

Perhaps a stretch but how about Leon Barnett? Ex NCFC, Wigan. 30 years old, not aware of him having massive injury issues and has amassed a quite a few games in Prem/Championship level.

Another former Canary as a striker option: Simeon Jackson. He was never prolific but good work rate and makes runs into channels.

similar to Greenacre.

It's a shame that fenton has those shoulder injuries.

I disagree. Fenton may have been made to play as a defender but at present I am not sure where his ideal spot should be. Last season he seemed to be somewhat lost as a player, position-wise. I hope this season will clarify this, as for a player that was promising so much he is actually not getting any younger and would not like him to just fizzle out.

Actually, getting outplayed quite a bit these days

Fenton has a huge season coming up, starting with the fact that he won't begin the season starting at right-back, unless Ernie fudges up massively. From there, he'll have to either find his way back to starting RB (adding on a whole lot of newfound defensive inspiration while he's at it), or sit behind Kosta on the bench at right-wing. If we even play wingers this season. He's 23 now, too old to get contracts on potential. Nothing wrong with sitting on the bench for a pro-team, but he's the victim of being played out of position for too long. He has to find his way back.

We saw flashes of his talent going forward last season at home to Manchester City, and he's scoring in pre-season, so who knows? I'd like to see him take the Appiah role of sitting on the bench for the general front-line, except, you know, be good at it.

Anton Ferdinand has been released. A League level for him at CB?? This season players like Ridenton really need to stand up and be counted, not as bit part time players at the club but getting into the team as a consistent starter. We have had about 3 or 4 youngsters come through the system and they have still yet to grab their chances for being regular starters. This has been quite disappointing really.

Proud to have attended the first 175 Consecutive "Home" Wellington Phoenix "A League" Games !!

Would be good if Logan Rogerson, Sarpreet Singh and James McGary got a first team chance.

Rogerson, yes. Singh is far to young, not enough physicality. I think McGarry will struggle to find a place in the team, he finds himself in the unfortunate position of playing somewhere where we already have a lot of talent, down that right wing.

Singh will make his debut this year, and hopefully by years end well be in the mix. I'm hoping that in 18 months he will have improved physically enough to be in the aw mix.

liked mcgarry playing more centrally, which is where i think hes very effective. I dont agree with the whole "physical" need for players to progress, if hes good enough then hes old enough in singh's case.

I reckon physicality is a huge part of the A-League. You can get away with it if you're playing on the wing, like a Rojas or Kosta when he first started, but not in the middle of the park.

He's played in just about every position apart from keeper in the last 18 months.

At least the young players are in the mix and been discussed. McGarry offers an attacking left side option which we have not really had with McGlinchey always coming in.

If Fenton plays as a winger like in pre season so far then we will have Kosta, McGlinchey, Fenton and McGary as the 4th option.
