Will he look to go overseas?

Being an Aussie / Kiwi if it doesn't work out he could probably come back to the A League and get a gig quite comfortably so why not give it a crack.

Exciting to hear from Ernie that the players we are looking at are in their 20s (even if they end up being 29.5 or something)

Really shows that the A-League (for the most part) is being seen as a viable option for overseas players and 'worthy' of their talents.

Good stuff, Ernie!

Not sure why it is better to get a player in their 20s - there are plenty of great centre backs in World Football who are in their 30s and recently in the A-League some great 30+ imports.

We should look at Turkish and Greek players. Nix pitch: Peaceful, free and paid on time.

It's a bit of an arbitrary number. Being 29 isn't inherently better than being 30. But, if we want to establish a long term partnership with Foxy (or anyone) and someone else, then we need someone mid-late 20s, so they have both experience and longevity.

IMO when talking about defenders-  especially CB's - you can get away with them being a bit older. Zwaanswijk is an example of this. Lack of pace and niggly injuries don't affect CB's as much as say, a winger or AM.

it's good to hear Ernie talk about being close to finding a CB BUT for me the biggest hole that needs plugging is the midfield. someone to replace Albert and protect the defensive line. It just concerns me that Lia is starting (albeit pre season). We have three number 10s in Roly, Gui and Wee Mac and only two central midfielders in Alex and Vinnie. I think Ernie has to get Roly to play more centrally and as an 8 - ie an Aaron Mooy type midfielder - and encourage him to do less on the ball. Mooy was so bloody good beacause of his movement and vision. I think Roly can be that guy for us but needs to keep it simple. Ernie needs to find a number 6. Given he is putting his eggs in the Dura basket he needs a 6 with wheels to screen Dura. As we saw last night players were dribbling around Lia in very soggy conditions - wait until it's summer.

I like the idea of the Nix playing with more width as they were far too narrow last year but playing a 4-1-3-2 formation or whatever it was last night just left us so exposed at the back when the mids weren't tucking in.

Ernie has said we're hiring a new defender and centre back. We're guessing it's a full back and a centre back but it could easily be a DM (or maybe a utility like Muscat).

He's also said:

"We still haven’t replaced Ben Sigmund, Manny Muscat, Albert Riera and Blake Powell, but we’ve got two more months to do that," he said.

So we're looking for defensive mids and strikers as well.

We already have a Spanish DM with great positioning, accurate passing and a massive work rate in our squad to replace Riera though....

Yeah I don't get that. Unless he was carrying a knock or something. I don't know why you would use an import slot on a player who's not going to start

Possibly. Like Totori.

Having said that I personally think that A-Rod is class and is much more suited to playing as a sole DM than Lia is. Lia has looked a better player in the last coulple of years precisely because he has been played further up the pitch. And I really rate A-Rod and think that even last year he was possibly better than Riera in that role. Riera's legs were going and he was committing a lot of fouls due to being caught out by it.

What? Someone who hasn't played a competetive match now for at least 18 months?

When we press it can be a little disjointed, the more attacking players press but if the opposition play out it leaves a lot of space between midfield and defence as our defence can sit a little deep - which makes it tough for our DM to cover; both Lia and ARod aren't quick - even if they man mark they can get beaten for pace and with the amount of space the contest is further in favour of the opposition. 2 DMs would allow for there to be less space in front of our defence, they can cover the space when the other is picking up the opposition AM but would require one of our attacking players to be dropped - or for one of them (Roly?) to play deeper. A switch from 41212 to 4231.
