Davila did well to win when he came from a club that apparently won't spend money. Well deserved but harder to watch when you know he's already left us
We've had four players win the Johnny Warren Medal (still the most of any team) and they've all left us after winning - so not much difference knowing that Uli is already going.
Just watched Davila win the Johnny Warren Medal, had to share the spotlight with Niko from SFC. Wish him all the best and a deserved award.

I think that Smeltz, Burns and Singh all were transferred outside the A League. Arguably Smeltz and Burns went to better competitions and Singh to his ancestral home and a wad of cash. Davila has gone for cash and what is thought to be a better lifestyle in Southern Sydney!!!!!! My view is that this shows the club has an ability to sign top players and it wouldn't be fair to blame them for not throwing more money at these players to retain them. I was hoping for something more sinister than this in analysis so I could read some wild theories and angst from posters, #offseason etc

I never knew Sarpreet was German.
He also never won the Johnny Warren Medal, it’s just a mix up with Roy Krishna, though the ancestral point is right

We lost Smeltz for free to Gold Coast, who a season later sold him on to Turkey for huge money iirc

On 12 July 2010, after a stellar season with Gold Coast United, it was announced Smeltz had agreed to terms with Chinese club Shandong Luneng on a two-year contract subject to passing a medical.[7] On 17 July 2010, it was announced that Smeltz had "changed his mind about China and decided to return home", just five days into his contract. There was some confusion after his decision to return home in regards to which club he was contracted to.
Shandong Luneng had paid the transfer fee to Gold Coast United, but a Football Federation Australia source confirmed that Gold Coast United had not dispatched Smeltz's International Transfer Clearance form, meaning Smeltz was therefore free to rejoin them without any possibility of an international tug-of-war over his services.
lmao maybe signing in a few weeks or a month or maybe 2 or maybe not at all... ffs
Sounds like something that could have been written by Royz. He has been rather quiet lately 🤔

Bit frustrating that this guy's fooling well-intentioned fans on the FB groups with this bull.
Laws, on the other hand - happy with this. 23, and has a lot to learn in a limited time, but if there's anyone in the league I want him learning off it's Taylor. Happy to see yet another prospect sign on for multiple years, and one who can cover DM at that.

I get why you said "ancestral home", I don't know how long his family have been living in Fiji but you wouldn't say that Ryan Nelson when moving to the UK is going back to his ancestral home - doesn't sound great.

The defining reason Krishna and his wife signed in India above other offers in South Korea, etc. was because of their Indian ancestry, so I think it's acceptable

He's barely literate so.......
Ran out of breath reading that
Can kind of understand the Singh speculation. It appeared he had a very unsettled time at Nurnberg, throw in covid and a return home for family reasons, then an early exit and BM2 being relegated to 4 B-liga. All areal shame as he was doing so well in his first season there. A reset in the A-league might not be a bad option for him. I guess it comes down to waht BM think is best for them investment wise.
Edit. He's just been omitted from the olympic squad. He must be going out on loan somewhere and need pre season to prove himself. Another blow for Singh, I'm sure he would have loved to join his mates and go to the games.

It would be correct and acceptable for me to say moving/travelling to Croatia is me going back to my ancestral home.
If Ryan Nelsen connects with his British roots, he can say that as well.
If it's where your ancestors came from.... its your ancestral home.

I wouldn't assume that about you or Roy, but fine its fine if that's how you and Roy feel about it.
Smeltz left because the shopping in Wellington was sharke, Burns has made a career out of playing well for a few seasons then leaving clubs and Krishna was always on the rise so was going to be hard to keep him in Wellington regardless of contract offers.

More importantly, if Singh ain't going to Tokyo, must indicate that him and Bayern have plans not involving the Nix for the last year of his contract.
So back to Europe? Hopefully he goes there in a good happy headspace. As 2 trips back to NZ with total 4 weeks yucky hotel MIQ in the last 6 months, looks like someone who has had some family issues/homesickness on top of an unhappy time at Nuremberg, in Covid afflicted Europe.
I think a lot of non-Kiwis have a stronger bond to the homes of their parents/grandparents than we tend to.Bullion

Nah, think about it all the time. When I watch cricket, drink tea, do football chants... and hey we gotta do something in the off season. Ask Indian football fans if they are aware of Singh and Krishna’s ethnicity!
Losing McGing, Devere and Hudson-Wihongi means there will be several defensive signings. Payne will be planned as CB, which means a right back will need to be signed, plus at least one more centre back. Players would surely have to be upgrades on those otherwise what would be the point, though if they are planned to be backups that might not be possible

I wonder if TAHW is being let go in order to play some amateur football before the new season. If we don't re-sign him in pre-season, surely we look at Zwetsloot

Has Zwetsloot been at the Oly Whites camp in Auckland? Other Kiwis like Brotherton, and Adam Mitchell must be in the reckoning for a trial at least.
TAHW sadly hasn't impressed in the chances he was given. Wouldn't Nix announce it, if their plan was just to release him temporarily to play some Northern League football?

He looked poor in the playing time he got. I don't think he has the speed for that league or the awareness of defensive assignments. One could ask they have done it this way because it then doesn't look like a player trying to skirt amateur and professional rules. Otherwise they announce that they are releasing Taylor so he can get some games in Central League but will re-sign him in a couple of months. Wouldn't wash.

No, Trevor wasn’t at the Auckland camp.
I obviously want TAHW to succeed so I’d always advocate for him, but this season he didn’t play once with Taylor, which would make him look a lot better, and last season he only started twice at centre back, both after lockdown when I can’t say any Phoenix player looked that good (understandably). I thought he was serviceable at centre back, but this season got stuck in a cycle of not playing, so not having match-readiness, so not playing etc
Yes TAHW would have suffered more than most, with the team being based in the Gong, and no reserve team to play for as he tried to work back from his constant niggles.
