WPM 2021/22 Squad Speculation, Confirmation and Mutual Termination
Happy enough with these guys getting scholarship deals. Add's another couple of Kiwis to the pro ranks and I'm sure they'll both get their chance to prove themselves when the time comes.
Good signings guys? I don't live in Wellington so it's not really my position to give critiques on how they've been playing.
In other words, a natural backup for Rufer.
I think people under estimate the A League and its strength, because it is the A League at times.
In Chopper's defence, he knows a bad defender when he sees one - usually in the mirror.
if they were good enough I'd have thought Uffie would have been aware of them and would have made an approach.
I know you're talking about Kaltak, Mitchell, Mata, Schrijvers sort of class, and honestly I agree that I wish we looked more at the domestic league, but there's also far more complications for the Nix doing that than simply pushing through the best of the academy players.

They also signed them on scholarship deals which doesn't contribute to our squad numbers so we could potentially sign more players in jan

Becoming very similar to what it used to be to make a National Team .
If you aren't in Auckland you won't get looked at and now we have similar for National teams and the Phoenix - If you aren't in the Phoenix Academy or Ole and have paid heaps of $$$$ to be there or if you have played at some non descript low level club overseas and got very little game- you won't get looked at.( seems irrelevant if there are better players available).
Is now a user pays system to make these teams.
They seen to have blinkers on when it comes to players who have not taken their route.

What investor in their right mind would start an A-league team in Auckland given a) their past and b) the economic/travel uncertainties from COVID. Agree though, I would like to see an Auckland team, I just question the feasibility.

But go off then, write them off because of a wooden spoon NZ branded team that wasn't popular 16 years ago.

And would also seem to be the whole point of a scholarship contract- in a normal season we’re not expecting these guys to get many minutes, but they will most likely be working full time training.
You can’t expect someone who is competing for a start and expecting plenty of minutes off the bench or through injury/suspension, as everyone seems to be suggesting Kaltak et al would be, to come into the team and get paid less.
If they don’t win a full contract immediately they might get an injury replacement contract or the like later. Also bear in mind that it may be difficult to trial or simply get out of Auckland etc too right now.
They have been signed on scholarship deals, the rules for a scholarship contract:
Scholarship Players – Each Club can contract up to 9 under 23 Australian Players on the national minimum wage. Any payments above the national minimum wage to these Players are included in the Club’s Salary Cap;

As Mogg is showing as citizenship as England would he take an import spot should he eventually be signed? Presume he has residency here.
- Tim Payne, totally Wellington
- Clayton Lewis, Wellington born and bred but signed from Auckland City
- Oli Sail - Auckland
- Ben Old - Auckland
- Sam Sutton - Auckland
- James McGarry - Dunedin
- Callan Elliot - Nelson
The countries two best youth set-ups are in Wellington so players from all around the country end up playing in Wellington and get seen by the Phoenix, to claim it's a Wellington only set-up is ignorant as is championing aging subpar National League players.
The best Handy Prem team in the final years was Team Wellington, Eastern Suburbs had to buy in a team of Wellington trained players and the real coach of the side to win a title.
in this years Chatham Cup North Shore is the only Auckland team in the final four.
For a population greater than the rest of the country Auckland has become a passenger in player development.
Ufuk Talay said the Phoenix men are still looking to make some import signings and have identified two potential targets. One is a free agent so could sign immediately and the other would be a loan signing who would be available to play in the January transfer window.

We’re guna win the league
Don’t give a f- about Sydney
We’re guna win the league!
Winston a free agent right?
Ufuk Talay also said that Nicholas Pennington arrives in Australia tomorrow and Luka Prso on Friday.

Would be the most important thing IMO. Do we also have to deal with uffies contract next summer too or did he sign an extension?
