Winston Reid in talks about an early contract termination.
He's on 70,000 quid per week, 2 years left. 7,000,000 quid.
Nice.
Do you think he might fancy coming home?

He might, but home is more likely to be Denmark than NZ

Phoenix had a Inter squad game this morning. Sadly could not figure out who are the trial or guest players.

I managed to nab an MIQ slot to finally come home and see family, but what I found interesting was that September was booked solid before late November / early December was.  I wonder if a few new Nix players were part of those September bookings?

Would have thought by now any overseas Nix players will be going straight to Aus. Would expect the whole team will head there in a couple of weeks to get some pre season games in.

Maybe. But with Nix heading to Oz in October makes almost as much sense to have any new visa signings do their 2 weeks MIQ in Oz. Like Hemed & a returning Davila did last season.

Will be a few NZ cricketers/staffers in those Sept MIQ spots now.

Nix are probably hoping they can get into Australia from NZ without going through the Aus MIQ if we get Delta under control, so will delay until the last possible moment.

Risky though. If they leave now they can probably negotiate a team type quarantine. Aka the AB's. As there is no covid in wellington.
If they wait and there is a delta outbreak in wellington, things change.
Sounds like the season is going to be delayed till November, so you would think they would want to be heading over there sometime next month.

You would think the Nix would be allowed some type of 'soft' quarantine, for their initial 2 weeks in Aus. Allowed out to train but otherwise in a hotel for 2 weeks, with regular Covid testing etc. Likely will depend on what state they are going to be based in.

WA, SA & QLD with currently no community Covid, presumably would be stricter than VIC & NSW.

Coming from Wellington (as opposed to Auckland) with whole squad & staff vaccinated, should help give them chances of extra freedom upon arrival.

I highly doubt they would put all their eggs in that basket

That's what delay until the last possible moment means.

We tried to sign him previously & could use some more depth in the midfield.

I think we are pretty well covered in defensive midfield, with Rufer, Lewis and Pennington. Laws and Payne can also play there. Would prefer we signed a CB. Am hoping the Kone thing is more than just a rumour. And we pick up another AM of quality.

Pretty sure Paartalu can play and has played CB a bit in his career. He could also give Long Pins a run for his money with the ladies.
Nix, Leyton Orient and Alloa Athletic supporting schmuck.

Seems like this will most likely be our starting lineup heading into the season:

20. Sail
17. Elliot
27. Taylor (c)
6. Payne
19. Sutton
13. Pennington
23. Lewis
9. Ball
7. Piscopo
18. Waine
88. Hooper

Highlights the challenges faced by the club in signing visa players. Them's the realities of living in this Covid world.

I don't think it's unexpected news that we're looking to fill out the remaining 4-5 spots in the squad with youngsters, but can't help but feel there is a Davila sized hole in that squad.

Here's hoping that Uffie can unearth another young gem or two from the rough.

Hopefully Piscopo is over his shoulder & calf issues. He's going to be massively important. Wonder if either Sutton or McGarry are going to be pushed forward at times.

Favourable draw with 2 games against CCM pre Xmas. Play the other 4 NSW teams once, in that 6 match stretch.

Wouldn't surprise me if McGarry gets a few sub appearances in that wide #10 role. Doubt Sutton gets moved around, he is still learning his role & needs the game time there.

Great to see that more academy and reserve players will be getting the call up to main team. But also makes me question whether we can be a competitive side this season mostly due to the inexperience of the academy players. Nevertheless, Singh, Cacace, Waine and Sutton have proved that the academy boys can step up. If Uffy can transform the relatively younger & inexperienced Nix into a competitive side and get us into the finals, it would be a massive achievement.

Introducing 2 or 3 academy players each season so far has worked well. But 5 or 6 is a different story. I do wonder if Uffie is bluffing a bit here and has some other options up his sleeves regarding recruitment. Taking academy players to Aus to get them in the environment and make up extra numbers for training. Is still good experience for those kids. And if any of them prove themselves, they might get an opportunity. Am I correct in assuming that Acadamy players don't count toward the total number allowed in your Squad?

If they have signed scholarship contracts, then they don't. But if they sign professional contracts like Paulsen and Old have, then they do.

Uffie maybe holding some new signings up his sleeve, but maybe he's just made the judgement call that for this early season 6 game block in NSW, he's better to just tap into some Weenix kids. Looks like they are really impressed with how Ben Old has developed, and will hope some of Mogg, Toomey, Ott or whoever can make the big leap as well.

As long as there are not too many injuries, Nix have okay depth in their 18 man squad, for first 6 games. Will likely be plenty of A League experience on the bench come season start - Fenton (if Elliott first pick), Rufer (Lewis/Pennington to start) & Sotiro. Even Laws & McGarry know the A League well now.

Reasonable chance that after 27th Dec, Nix will return to NZ, and will be easier to sell the club to a visa player (who may have a family), once all this early season uncertainty about where Nix are going to be based is resolved. Plus hopefully lot more MIQ slots open up, with TT bubble reopened.

Bit dissapointing it seems that Talay not looking at any NZ domestic players (outside the Weenix kids), but Northern League has been shutdown now for what 6-8 weeks. So any guys that might have been in the frame from that league, way too short of A League level match fitness. Maybe some of those guys might get a trial once the National League Championship finishes??

Lastly could Uffie have done a deal with the Welnix owners. I agree not to make any more squad signings for new few months (so not increasing the club's wages bill), if you agree to find us a better base than the Gong (given Uffie's criticism of the training facilities there). Even if that alternative NSW base will cost the club more than the established Gong base.

Also might be easier in the next window to get players into the respective countries and states.

So hopefully home straight with Tayls and Kone! Though I would also accept this as a negotiation tactic.
