Stop start affair which suits us far more than it does City. But for a young and inexperienced squad, we're giving as good as we get, and we haven't been carved open or given away any gilt edged chances.
Boys are putting in a good shift considering the differences between the two sides. Really like the look of Kelly-Heald. Defence is looking more solid that our attack. Not sure what is going on there but we seem to save our poor passes for the final third.
Looked like they started off trying to play a high tempo 2 touch game. But due to MC high line, gave the ball away more often then not and have resorted to long balls and counter attacks. Some pretty nerve wracking moments from Paulson with ball at feet. His hesitation and pass putting receiving player under pressure. He looks ok with ball at feet but needs to move it quicker or he's going to get caught out.
Not having a midfield of passing ability is costing us here. When we try to move out from defence, there is no one to break the press.
If Pennington and Rufer are gonna be the midfield peiring we do have a passing issue, neither are great at consistently finding their man, the pass from the full backs to the wingers is gong to be our best outlet.
We give them the ball, they score. I know it's pre-season, but we look hopeless, not sure if they can learn basic passing, decision making in the next two month.

If we aare planning on a 4-2-4 then the two midfielders we have at present do not inspire much at all. Neither are great on the ball, neither have scored a tonne of goals, both have a reckless tackle in them and both tend to pass the ball to the opposition. We need an top quallity midfielder which currently we do not have. Striker - we have one decent, Wingers we've got some quality there, Defenders - pretty well covered with youth and experience . Goalkeeper - Im confident that Paulsen has us covered.
We can try and pretend that it’s preseason and it’s not an indication of how we’ll be come this season but I saw absolutely zero to suggest that this season is going to be anything less than an absolute grind. Chiefy can try and say we’ll be playing his style as much as he wants but all we will be doing is defending and trying to sneak single goal wins. The fact that we have half a dozen Academy players that have hardly shined in the National League in our squad and bench goes to show that the club has given up on bringing in players.
First half wasn't that bad, we had our chances and gave them few. Took a lucky deflection for their goal. While for the 2nd half, they adjusted their press and we didn't respond. In fact, we capitulated. Looking at Rufer, Wootton, Pennington, Payne and Kraev in particular. Also showed the contrast in depth. They could bring on a couple of internationals while we brought on a couple of boys who had just been on their first time on an international flight! Still can't fault the academy players though. I think they were on a hiding to nothing and no one disgraced themselves out there.
In terms of looking a head to the season, while its not great to get pumped it is worth noting that we won't play city every week and we won't play half the team of academy players every week either. However the big worry for me is the disconnection between the tactics Chef wants to play vs the players we have. Clearly, Chef wants possession. Start at the back and then progress. Unfortunately, atm, we only have players who can start at the back, fudge it in the middle and put pressure on the back. We also have an amazing goal scoring forward, but he is best on the end of things, not in the build up. Then we have Kraev, who seems best with space to run at defenders or the space that quick transitions provide. Yet the approach we employed today was often sedentary. . I wont start on Ball or Kosta as both are yet to offer anything worth thinking about. Not that I thought we were going to go into the season as title contenders, but I think some of the above will need to be figured out before we can even think of ourselves as top 6 contenders.
My thoughts. Paulsen did very well. Payne was the best of the back four, the others weren't too bad. Kelly-Heald and Surman both had pretty good games. Rufer and Pennington were defensively pretty good, but struggled to find outlets. Kosta started off with some good runs and worked hard, faded in second half. Kraev was disappointing. Zawada worked hard, always showing for the ball. His shooting not good today though. Bally did work into the game when he came on and I could see he will be a key link again. The young subs gave it heaps. We are short of a creative outlet. City have a strong, experienced line-up and it showed in the second half.
