Ditto as Addicks. It's great to be able to sit with the same mates while watching different events.

There is a reason why 4 Kings won best sports bar, and nearly won best bar overall you know...
70 + screens ftw!

no worries, different strokes for different folks. I was upstairs at JJ Murphy's, they turned their pool hall into a phoenix zone. The sound was s*** so you couldn't hear the commentary because of the band playing downstairs, otherwise would have been a cool place.

If I go into a bar to watch a match what I'm looking for is big screen and big atmosphere, everyone focussed on the same game, no music just commentary.

I was a the last World Cup in Germany and people set up these mini cinemas/bars especiallyto show the games, you really just need a big room, a projector, some cheap seating and some beer.

Big Dunc, if that's a "typical kiwi sports bar" where do you find it? Lovelocks is the only other one I know and they have the same setup (lots of small screens) as you guys. The problem with most of the normal pubs is that sport takes second priority to music.

Any recommendations? I've gotta find my dream bar before the World Cup starts.

Sadly was to packed when I got there, ended up at murphys instead, showed the game upstairs, was good decent amount of folks there aswell.

We will never fully decide who has won the football.

I got to FK late as was at the cricket first and made a mad dash. Was in the line up to get in but gave up. When looking through the windows though I was amazed to see so many people NOT wearing nix/YF shirts.

I ended up going to Hotel Bristol. There was commentary and no band. Good atmosphere but would have rather have been at the 4K. Who would have thought that most bars being packed out for the game.

I stuck with the line and got in. Huge amount of bandwagoners, many of them leaving after it hit 3-1. Kinda sucked that some YF regulars couldn't get in because of them, but hey, business is business. I've got the same attitude as the Jets game - hopefully some of the bandwagoners enjoyed it and will come back for next season, home matches AND away matches.

What I couldn't get was the few people there NOT watching the game Kind of a waste of space IMHO haha

I should have stuck it out but the bouncer dude said it was full and they weren't letting people in.

Yeah I also hope the bandwagoners come back.

I was at a band gig at san fran bathouse and in between sets i raced out down to bristol where the bouncer gave me a funny look (dressed in full goth gear) & poked my head in jst in time to see sydney get their 3rd goal then sprinted back to SFBH in a bad mood stealthkiwi2010-03-14 20:01:30

With the time difference in South Africa, I'm thinking a lot of games will be early morning so I'll be watching from the comfort of my home.

by the later stages of the tournament the important games will all be at 6.30 am. So when it goes into extra time pushing on 9am there is that age old dillemma: 'To go to work or not to go to work?'

Thats why being in town at a pub in the late morning is good because then you can rush to work

Mate, the 'typical kiwi sports bar' closed down with the Sports Cafe as it was out of date. You may struggle to find another one totally dedicated to sports as we are. Good luck finding it and I hope you enjoy yourself if you do.

Are you giving me attitude? All I am after is a place with a good atmosphere where I can watch on a big screen. I don't want to watch on a small screen because you can't see as much detail of the game. I really don't see what you would lose by installing a big screen in the four kings. You just can't get close enough to those LCD screens to really watch the game.

Don't get me wrong, I actually like your bar aside from this grievance - good food and I have always found the bar staff friendly.

"Am I giving you attitude" Get a grip.
As I have stated We dont need or want a big screen. It would change the whole flow of the bar and we purposely have set the bar up as it is for a reason. To give everyone in the bar the best seat in the house. if you want a big screen, we dont have one. What we do have though is the best atpmosphere of any bar in the country to watch football. We are commited and love football and it is a core part of our business. We look after YF and they look after us. If you dont want to come down then cool, go and watch the games at the gaylord pub you put a link to.

at least at the four kings if one TV craps out, you have 69 other ones to look at.

Against what would be astronomical odds our 2 permanent projectors (at the BB) threw a wobbly and crapped out, we had to jury rig a third on Saturday night.

we will be showing WC and champions league games on our big screens as well, but generally only if they kickoff after 5am, our end of town is a ghost-town, at 2am.

Due to the logistics of the stag do I was on, I ended up watching the game at the Cambridge, literally you could smell the atmosphere. Decent crowd in without been heaving, quite a few nix jerseys, and a few chants went up. They turned their music off and turned the commentary up for the game, with one big projected screen at the south end of the bar.

So other than the sh*t beer, feral derros constantly reeking the place out with grog bog farts, absolutely munted cricket fans, oh the (he notorious (lecherous) "famous" nz cricket fan was the table beside us, munted teens getting even more munted before hitting courtenay it sounds just like the sports bar you're after monkeyfish.

Oh, and I got interviewed by Radio NZ!

not cool man. what year is this? You've made an insiduously homophopic slur and worded it in such a way that you can play dumb if someone calls you on it.

you've also changed your tune on the screen - earlier you said you didn't want a big screen because they are bad quality. Then I show you a picture of a high quality big screen, and now you're saying it is about 'flow.' Been studying Feng Shui, have we? The only reason a big screen would disrupt the flow of your bar is if people are congregating around it to watch. Which would seem to indicate that those people WANT to watch the game on a big screen. What is the logic here?

The reason I called you on your attitude is that your posts to me have been wriiten in a passive-aggressive/angry/sarcastic tone, 'mate.' I was never picking a fight with you. Don't try and bully me because I've got the balls to express an opinion which differs from the group. Yeah it's your bar and you can do what you like, but if you say "If you don't like it go somewhere else" you just sound like a jackass. 4 kings is the HQ of Yellow Fever, so going somewhere else means going somewhere with less atmosphere.

As for the guy who was talking about the smelly Cambridge, that is pretty damn ironic. Ever been downstairs at 4K during a big game? Look, the place has a few things going for it, but smell ain't one of them!!!

"Mate, We purposely didnt have and dont want a big screen for a number of reasons. Firstly the quality of picture from a projector is terrible. LCD and Plasma is so much better it doesnt compare. Secondly, we dont want just one focal point of the bar. Having so many screens more areas where punters can enjoy their own screen in their own area. We have purposely tried to break away from the typical Kiwi sports bar. Im sorry you dont like it. but you are the minority."

This was my first post on the subject. It clearly states the TWO reasons, so telling me i have changed my tune is incorrect. Secondly, you have put a link to a picture not a photo of a REAL bar. I hate to burst your bubble but that TV probably isint real, Its a drawing. You dont get that quality from LCD or plasma let alone a projector.... Oh and it would be difficult to bend any kind of screen around like that and get good quality. I know, why dont you go and buy some Crayons and draw some nice pictures like that for yourself and leave the tough stuff to us.
Why dont we agree to disagree and leave it at that bigdunc2010-03-15 19:23:09

no man, it's as real as can be. It's just a question of money. It's designed by a professional multimedia company called Barco, they do everything from bars right up to Times Square advertising displays and the London Olympics 2012.

yeah fair point I didn't realise your earlier post mentioned the flow aspect, fair enough if that's how you want to design your bar. lets move on, agreed.

it didn't even register as anything other than a poncy olde englishe name that once was common and now is not - prob no longer common due to the fact that some 12yr olds (mental age) smirk cause the thought of 2 guys bumping uglies makes them so uncomfortable they unconsciously cross their legs and squirm and nervous giggle ensue

and now for the money shot... note that the screen has the option of being configured for multiple channels, as shown here, or for full screen mode, as in the other picture which I supposedly drew with my crayons.

stealthkiwi - yeah I think most attempts at humour are based around things people are secretly not comfortable with...

I would certainly watch a game at the Gaylord if I ever happen to be the vicinity.

dude, I agreed to move on because I was offering you an olive branch. Go back through all the posts, at no point have I disrespected you while meanwhile you have been giving me sh*t. What difference does it make if I am new to the forum? You are acting like a complete twat. You accused me of lying, got it wrong, and now you are not man enough to admit it. Here is the link to the barco website, anyone can go there and see the photos of the screens they installed at Gaylord.

I was trying to be nice to you, but there is something about your tone that reminds of an insecure schoolyard bully.
