lol who was it ...
$40-45 Million Soccer Specific Stadium - Petone Phoenix
Some of the subjects covered in that meeting. Wow. Stretching hard.
I still think the people behind the stadium are missing out by being so quiet.
Did you see the two page flyer they had in this week's Hutt News? A good start.
Further we shoudl be asking just who are PUEA and PPAG and who they are/represenht?
There's another group to watch out for who are opposing this too, the Communal Understanding and Nurturing Together Society.

If the temp stadium in Chch cost $30mil, then i think our expectations of what $48mil can afford are pretty reasonable, especially given the illustrations released last week.
[Edit: Should point out the initial estimates for the ChCh Stadium were 20 mil and that ballooned out to 30 mil. For the Waikato Stadium upgrade in 2002, their cost ballooned out from 27 mil to 39 mil. Stadium's tend to cost a lot more than the budget says]
We should go for something like Dartford FC's stadium - totally undermine the greenies from the start:
Take that hippies! What can you complain about now!?
I've seen a few post mentioning 'greenies' and 'hippies'.
The thing being is that the crowd at the meeting in Petone were a long way from 'greenies' and 'hippies'. Many were would be socially conservative and church going. The two groups that are opposing this plan are well organised and smart. To make them change their point of view you have to have a better argument than they have. Name calling will not undermine their position.
Mohammed, on the left, I'm still in touch with. He's now living in Agadez, Niger. More focused on his animals now as tourism has dried up. Is active with a co-op promoting local goods, leather work and bijouterie, into Europe.

People like Coldplay and voted for the Nazis. You can't trust people.
That insert in the Hutt News did answer alot of those points.
Would like to see it circulated more widely as many copies of the Hutt News go straight in the recycling bin.

Allegedly
Understood.
That stadium, Princes Park, in your link is amazing is it not?

What page is that on? I couldn't find it when skimming through.
It was a glossy single page double sided insert in the middle of the paper.
Smaller than Tabloid size.
Guess mine fell out somewhere along the way. Or the nimbys stole it!

Can anyone take a pic of theirs and post it? Be keen to have a read
Who commissioned it?

Thanks dairyflat
Guess the nimbys ignored the bit where petone rugby will be playing their games there and the park will still be open for use as a green space.
I think they should have put at least one marked rugby field on the outside of the stadium on the top of that concept drawing. Get those rugby heads on side
Fuck this stupid game
Doubt they'd care.
CFT have already stated that petone RFC will use the ground/facility. That hasn't stopped people from saying that there will no longer be any club sport on the ground.
There are obviously valid concerns that people have. But most of it (and of what is on that page) is just your typical nz being against something just because...where if you challenge them rationally, they can't come up with a genuine reason as to why they're against it.
I actually quite liked the write up by the Hutt news editor. Thought it was nicely balanced and summed up the issue on both sides.
Allegedly
Just had a look at the FB Page.
Much Kudos to Tegal, AJ, Dairy Flat, Surge Qld and Smithy (They are the regulars on here I recognise, may be others) for presenting views in a balanced, non emotional, well reasoned manner.
Well done.
I like that it appears that the existing stand will be retained (at least in the concept drawing it is).

- obviously reduces the cost
- one less thing for the complainers to complain about (preserves some heritage)
- reduces the impact of the development on the residents closest to the park
- means the stadium has a bit of a quirky element that all good grounds have
It's also a potential new home for the Fever, being quite self-contained.
Although the existing stand doesn't actually come all the way down to ground level in the drawing above it does. Not sure whether the extension of the stand to pitch side is an actual design feature or just a liberty taken by the artist.

Thanks bro. I mean well in everything I post (sometimes the heat of the moment gets to me, but I'm truly behind the club and a back-to-back-to-back YF Zone Season holder (I don't even sit in the zone in case I get shit on by people who hate me) so good to know at least someone appreciates my contributions).
FYI I'm the guy posting on the nimby FB page with the male pornstar profile pic and the name AJ. Chur

SO agree
It's even the same angle to the pitch, but drawing in more behind the goal space at the same time, perfect
We should go for something like Dartford FC's stadium - totally undermine the greenies from the start: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Princes_Park,_Dartford
"Construction work began on 14 November 2005. Designed by Alexander Sedgley architects, the stadium has a capacity of 4,100 (642 seated), and has been described as one of the most ecologically sound ever built.[1] The pitch level is sunk two meters below the external ground level to reduce noise and light pollution. It is estimated to have cost around £7 million. The stadium was opened on 11 November 2006 when Dartford FC, who had been without a home ground in the borough since 1992, beat Horsham YMCA 4-2 in an Isthmian League Division One South league fixture, in front of a capacity 4,097 crowd.[2]
The environmental aspects of the stadium include - The stadium roof has a sedum roof blanket, a living roof that provides a natural air filtration system. solar panelson the roof serve the community changing areas and public toilets hot water storage cylinders. The roof is supported by treated Glulam timber beams. Water recyclingsystem which serves the toilets within the clubhouse. Rain water is collected in the two large ponds at the north end of the stadium grounds. Underfloor heating on both levels of the clubhouse. Low energy lighting. Increased fabric insulation to give the clubhouse better thermal retention and efficiency. Condensing boilers to provide a more energy efficient system. Also excavated earth was reused for landscaping the external courtyard areas around the stadium.[2]"

Also, interesting article about designing stadia to create crowd atmosphere here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-22110898
This truly is a thing of beauty. Amazing.
I used to live close to this ground and watched my local club, Welling United play there. The site is a bit of a mess though:

You may think E.P is a fuck up J.V but Westpac is on par at least, you have to admit. This on-going debate highlights that. Both venues are only perfect for two events a year and the rest are terrible events for massive stadiums.
I agree with that, Westpac was never the right stadium. (Right location, wrong shape)
When it was first proposed I was unsure why they made it round, for what equated to 1-2 cricket games a year at the stadium, when everything else there was played on a rectangle pitch. Size wise, I think they went for what they did as it would accomodate the big events and the small events at the same time.
I wonder if it had been a rectangular 30,000 seat stadium if this debate would still be had.
It has run at a profit every year since it opened. One of the few stadiums in the entire southern hemisphere to do that. It did something right. Rightly or wrongly it was built to be multipurpose at a time when having a football team in the city seemed a fanciful notion. Who knows, in 10 years time we may be looking back at this and saying why did they only build a 12,000 seat stadium?
I think a genuine fear of mine is only being able to host 12k.
If the Nix continue to play the way they have lately and the AWs start to perform again I'm sure that there would be an increase in attendance. Also the FFA Cup will hopefully bring in larger crowds. I'm sure Welnix would rather keep the gate for these kinds of games then give it to Westpac Stadium.
As long as the old stand can be expanded or knocked down or the other three sides easily enlarged I'll be happy!
Auckland will rise once more

An egghead just rung me and suggested the Nix play their next home game at Petone Rec. He reckons the existing stand will be big enough to hold the crowd after last nights performance. No need to build the new stands.
Don't worry, I've put him right. Explained that football followers aren't like egghead heads, we support our team no matter what.
A dog with a bone :)

Gareth said in the podcast that there is room to expand either end.
For anyone wanting to keep abreast of news concerning opposition to the stadium idea.
Thanks for the good number who came to the Council meeting on Wednesday and those who have taken other action since Monday’s community meeting. On Wednesday the Council agreed to “receive the formal proposal from CFT and ask the CEO to report back at 18 March meeting with an appropriate course of action”. That means that it is still possible for the Council to include the Petone Stadium in the draft Annual Plan at its 18 March meeting.
So what should we do now?
If you know any of the Councillors, it may be worth contacting them to raise some of the questions and issues that you have. These might include:
· Why is this being rushed?
· How is the Council planning to engage with the community on this?
· For such a big investment, what thorough analysis has been done? There are a lot of important details that no one has information about.
· Once a project is in the Draft Annual Plan, it has the Council’s backing. It can only be stopped by an outcry even though it may not ever have had widespread community support. How are you going to test whether the stadium is supported by the community?
The Petone Community Board is hoping to arrange a public meeting on the proposal. More details to come, but they will probably ask the Community Facilities Trust to talk about the proposal and answer questions.
The 18 March Hutt City Council meeting will be in the evening, possibly starting at 5.30pm with public comment like Wednesday’s meeting. The agenda will be posted two days beforehand. It will be important to have plenty of us there.
For those who are interested in some related information you may like to look at these two links:

http://www.stuff.co.nz/taranaki-daily-news/news/7055470/Stadium-proposal-off-table-for-now This is another community that had a very similar proposal that got voted out of their draft annual plan.
We will keep you posted.
