$40-45 Million Soccer Specific Stadium - Petone Phoenix
Blimey!
"At the end of the drive the lawmen arrive...
I'll take my chance because luck is on my side or something...

Oh Rio, Rio, hear them shout across the land..."
I was internalising this complicated situation the other day.
All well and good making fun of the "not in my backyard" brigade, but what if it actually was in your backyard.
I am lucky enough to live right across the road from Trafalgar Park in Waterloo, an open park with a football field on it used by many locals for everything from running, circuit training, playing football to walking the dog. I often struggle to get a park outside my house if the nieghbour have people over. While admittedly it is not big enough for this to actually happen, what if a stadium that held 10,000 people was built right across the road from me and I had no interest in football or rughy or sport in general? The reality is I would be the one formulating the petition to the council trying to get it knocked on the head.
The stadium has, I beleive many benefits but it is easy to knock people as being NIMBY's when it is not actually in your own backyard. If it was, you very well may have a similar view

In Auckland you just buy next door to some large public use building and then whine continuously till its closed / made more palatable to your own refined taste ....
Not sure you could compare Western Springs or Eden Park with the Petone Rec
Grumpy old bastard alert

Would love them to turn Ben Burn park into Phoenix stadium - but for purely selfish reasons.
We used to live by Eden Park when I was a kid, my sister would sell our backyard for parking at $20 a hit, this was in the 90's when $20 was worth allot more than it is now. She would pocket $100 for a few minutes work, not bad for a 10 year old.
Friends of the family used to lived right up against the boundary, they used to put up scaffolding against the fence and we would all watch from our private stand. Eden park eventually bought out their landlord and demolished the place.
Plus we used to always find things in our backyard from where people staggering up the hill fell over our fence. Scored a pretty cool hat that way.
If parking is really going to be that bad the Nimbys should treat it as a opportunity! Make a bit of extra pocket money for no work by renting out your driveway or backyard.

Hard for me to say really, living out in the burbs. Not quite the same but where ive lived for the last 20+ years we've had a decent size bar/restaurant start operating within the last 12months, and some big 3-4 story construction commence in the middle of the community - plenty of NIMBYS opposed it, as they did when we lost our green space a few years back (golf course turned into residential development).... but ive never once complained about any of these. Granted neither of these are in direct view of where I live, but I do drive past it all everyday. Ive always accepted change/adaptation/modernisation/whatever you want to call it. Maybe when im old and grumpy I might change ...

Should have paid to park in someones backyard.
The only offers I get from 10 yr old girls are for $2 bags of fejoas.

Find a girl, settle down, if you want you can marry.
Just relax, take it easy.
You're still young, that's your fault,
There's so much you have to know.

BREAKING NEWS: EARTHQUAKE PRONE BUILDING - PETONE RECREATION GROUND GRANDSTAND.
This story just breaking so has missed our April issue.
Structural engineers working for the Hutt City Council have recently undertaken an initial seismic assessment on the Petone Recreation Ground Grandstand.
This initial assessment identifies the building as being potentially earthquake prone, rating the building as being 5% of the new building standard (NBS).
Quotes are currently being sought to carry out a detailed structural investigation of the building, at which time Council will have a much better understanding of the issues affecting the building and the works required to rectify the situation.
Having consulted the Wellington Rugby Football Union and the Petone Rugby Football Club, Council has decided to continue to make the grandstand facilities available for rugby use and to inform users of the earthquake prone assessment.
This decision has been made on the basis that the likelihood of the building sustaining major damage or collapse in a moderate earthquake is low, considering the length of time the structure has existed (through a number of moderate seismic events), its current visual condition (no sign of any earthquake damage) and the relatively short period of time each week it is used.
Notices advising users that the building is earthquake prone will be displayed on all entrances. Rugby Teams are also advised to minimise the time spent in the use of the building facilities to reduce exposure to any possible risk.
See the Initial Seismic Assessment, IEP and notice documents at https://www.facebook.com/groups/PetoneNoticeboard/
From the Petone Chronicle.
Mohammed, on the left, I'm still in touch with. He's now living in Agadez, Niger. More focused on his animals now as tourism has dried up. Is active with a co-op promoting local goods, leather work and bijouterie, into Europe.

The immediate reply, on Facebook, to that Petone Chronicle piece above was
Quite... ??

Probably some Nimby that detests any sport in any form.

Surely now is the perfect time to knock it down and start afresh ?
Suppose it could be just the thing to get the rugby lot on side with the idea?

The guy who has been spamming the page every day for the last month is like that. Said he detests all sport stadiums because they don't make financial returns for the councils and are just for a bunch of overpaid athletes to prance around in (paraphrasing).
Tried explaining to him that councils don't build infrastructure purely for financial return, there are other measures of return and benefit that they build infrastructure for and measure their feasibility by (roads are an obvious example, parks and playgrounds - basically any council project.
But naturally he didn't want to listen and continued his scaremongering via spamming the page with irrelevant articles.
I'm glad smithy came out and said that fans are happy to have a discussion and recognise that some people will have issues, and that those opposed are more interested in scaremongering than joining in on that discussion.
The Ruf, The Ruf, The Ruf is on Fire!!
Yeah it'd be interesting to see if the 'it doesn't give the council any financial return' stance only applies to things he isn't personally interested in.
Allegedly
He doesn't even have a display pic. I called him out on it too.
No pic / no care.
That is called consistancey. Sure the council are there to serve the people etc and provide facilities. When was the last time Te Whiti park or whatever it is called, return a profit? Or Percys reserve? Or the play area on the Petone foreshore? The very people opposing a land redevelopment only ever point out the things that support their argument and close their mind off to anyone who challenges them.
Where I live, I got a big fucken prison near me. Full of bad guys, big fucken deal. Should I suddenly go to the media to get it moved or closed down? No, I suck it in and handle it. Nimbys need to grow a pair and handle it too.

Hmmm there is something about your post that I can't quite put my finger on.

I'm just pointing out that we have to learn to deal with things we dont like. Another example I can use is people buying houses overlooking the airport and then bitch about the noise from the aircraft.
