Bit different though, as these people didn't buy a house next to a 12000 seat stadium.
Some of those most opposed to it don't seem to be the ones living right next door though.

Yeah but don't you work at that facility? I mean you live there as it's close to work and it's been there for ages no?

It's a bit like medical staff living in doctors quarters complaining about the big hospital in their garden.

Or clowns moaning about the circus tent in their back yard.

Sorry mate it just made me scratch my head.

I take exception to that FT.

I am a clown (in fact a prize one according to some) and I don't complain.

It's not going to happen either way.

Why not? It seems fifty fifty to me. Stadiums get built.

The quake report on the old stand might be a blessing for the proposed new stadium. If the stand is only 5% earthquake compliant it might make more sense to knock it down and build another one. So if it has to be done then I think less people would object to a new stand. If you are going to rebuild it then why not make it a bigger one as part of the new development. However it will result in higher costs for the whole project as the old stand was going to remain as part of the whole new stadium.

It would be an ideal oppurtunity to increase the green space

I just found out today that there is no equivalent of NIMBY in any other European language, they just borrow it off English. Perhaps because English-speaking peoples are the champion moaners of the globe.

 From Wiki

Origin and history

The Oxford English Dictionary identifies the acronym's earliest use as being in 1980 in the Christian Science Monitor, although even there the author indicates the term is already used in the hazardous waste industry.[3][4] The concept behind the term, that of locally organized resistance to unwanted land uses, is likely to have originated earlier. One suggestion is it emerged in the 1950s.[5]

In the 1980s, the term was popularized by British politician Nicholas Ridley, who was Conservative Secretary of State for the Environment.[citation needed] Comedian George Carlin used the term in a comedy skit, implying that people had already heard of it. Although he did not coin the term, he certainly helped to popularize it.[6]

So it might be American then which makes sense as we Brits don't tend to use the term "yard" and for us it would be NIMBG

Although you say "English-speaking peoples" moaning is generally aimed at the Brits which is a view I've always found amusing. Living in New Zealand for the last twelve or thirteen years I've found the whole whinging thing to be about the same. I suspect unless folk live in a tropical paradise, populated by Rachel Smalley approved women or there male equivalents and have lots of money then people moan no matter where they live.

Nice one FT. I also quite like BANANA, FRUIT & SOBBY (see [5] above. If NIMBY was of British origin I suspect it may instead have been NIMAT (Not in my allottment thanks) or possibly NIMBPOB (Not in my back passage Old Boy).

 England is not a nation

You're bold!

One answer would be: England is a member of FIFA and therefore counts as a "nation", as does the occupied six counties Northern Ireland and the Farøes.

On the other hand, "unrecognized" nations' flags can cause just as much trouble. The St George flag is often used by right-wing gangs in England (eg EDL). Imagine raising the flag of Kurdistan while playing football in Turkey, or of Slavic Macedonia when in Greece, or the Confederate flag in a black neighbourhood of the USA, or - closer to home - the Tino Rangatiratanga flag if you're playing against the Don Brash Fan Club XI.
There's a distinction between "nation" in the political science sense of a group of people with a shared cultural, linguistic, and/or historical narrative, and the popular use of the term "nation" as a synonym for "nation-state" or country. England is definitely not a nation-state. Although some people would debate whether there is an English nation in the first sense (significant cultural differences but definite historical continuity as a "people") I think most would accept it. Sport is actually a really good representation of what Michael Billig referred to as "banal nationalism" - the common, everyday expressions of nationalism as opposed to the extremist and possibly violent position most people think of when the term nationalism is used. From that position England is most definitely a nation.

lols, haven't heard the term "Banal Nationalism" since I finished my political science degree back in '02.

I do wonder if the impact on the local residents is slightly overstated. With the number of games in an A-League season, the stadium will be used 13 times by the Phoenix? And any use by the Petone Rugby club will be at the same level as currently. I liveless than 10 minutes walk from Craven Cottage, which holds double what is proposed here, and the impact is not massive, apart from the pubs being busier, and more people on the streets. If the public transport links are of good quality, then the impact will be even less.

We must live in similar places as I live about that distance from the Cottage and agree that the impact is minimal. However, public transport is the key difference here. I would imagine of a 12,000 crowd that may come to a Nix game at Petone. 30/40% would drive? Nothing anywhere near like that at Craven Cottage.

What they're going to do about parking will be the clincher in this for me. I can see that being an absolute nightmare (it's bad enough on a day that Petone Rec may have 3 or 4 club rugby games on) and if I was a local resident I think I could be justifiably miffed about it. If they've got a decent plan for parking then this should go through. If they don't, then I could see it being justifiably put back in the box.

I live about 5 mins walk from Watford's home ground.  No car parking and right beside Watford General Hospital in a  housing area like Petone Rec.  Unlike clubs in central London, many people drive here.  The police just don't let people near the stadium and actually change the road layout so only people going to the hosiptal can get into the area.  Footie fans are not able to park near the ground so have to walk from all over Watford.  Nearest tube is about 1km away.  I have not had any problems with being near the club except grumbling when I hear them scoring goals against the teams I support (eg Leeds earlier in the week (couldn't get an away fans ticket  grrrr)).

I was at Petone Rec on Friday (fully utilising the uncluttered green space...   )

I was looking at where the new thing might go and it looked to me as if the Rec would in effect lose, wait for it,  ONE pitch.

It will lose one or two (full size football pitches), depending on if/how it is reconfigured. Nothing like the "all our greenspace" that some crap on about.

Was that in response to your quotes in that article a while back? Crazy being as every point you've made has been perfectly reasonable and taking into account the concerns of both sides.
Sounds like the letters have only really proven your point.

Disappointing to see their lack of bias in what they choose to print (well, don't print). Of course they can't print every LTTE but some semblance of balance on an issue I would have thought would be prudent/reasonable.

You really think anyone wrote a letter to the editor in support? I doubt it.

Also, it's the Hutt News, they probably do print every single letter they get. And some that they get the receptionist to whip up to fill up some inches.
