Newstalk ZB announced in the 6.30 news this morning that the Phoenix have confirmed the signing of Central Coast Mariners' Adam Kwasnik.

But I can't find any news anywhere to back that announcement up, including on the ZB website.

Is it fact?

Weird huh?

Especially after Dewhurst asked Ricki directly last night and he wouldn't confirm but said they'd hope to announce a new signing mid-week...

Heard the same thing this morning, ZB wouldn't have announced it, if it wasn't confirmed surely.

ZB don't have it on their website, and it was only in the one newscast I think.

Radio Sport had it on their news at 8am (same Network as ZB).

I'm fairly sure Phoenix Towers haven't released anything official.  Unless the Fever are off the Christmas Card list

Suspect ZB/Radiosport have jumped the gun.

Hope it's true though.  Be a good signing.

If Radio Sport and Zb announced it ,why is it not on the Phoenix website now??
Or has the media released it earlier than it was supposd to???

It doesn't seem like there is a club announcement out there, not even an embargoed one.

They could just be calling it based on discussion here.

If true he's an excellent signing, possibly the best so far. Good player well up to playing a bit higher, a thoughtful user of the ball who weighs in with goals.
Nix, Leyton Orient and Alloa Athletic supporting schmuck.

McKain is the best so far imo.

Has not been confirmed officially but Kwas will be a Wellington player, he's joining on a 1 year deal!
Permalink Permalink
over 17 years ago · edited over 13 years ago
It was on the 6am news on 91ZM....then not on any later news so wasn't sure if I'd dreamt it.....

I'd be very happy with Adam Kwasnik joining us.....

Surely the club will have to bring forward an announcement if its out there on the news now....

Not really - there's no player in your squad like Kwasnik.

He's a striker, but not a target man or someone who can lead the line. He sits off the shoulder of another player, can work the channels, and is quick enough with a good workrate.

You have AMs at the moment (Daniel, Hearfield, maybe Ferrante), and you have wingers (Gao, Bertos, Daniel again), but you don't have a player quite like Kwasnik. He's exactly what Smeltz needs next to him - you don't need another big man - you need someone who's going to work the gaps the opposition leaves when they are marking Smeltz more closely this season. You need someone who can work those tight spaces next to Smeltz.
The problem last year was that the only forward you could pair Smeltz with was Coveny/Brownlie, both of whom are the same type of striker and can't work those gaps.

Kwas can also play wide. So you also have the option of going to a 4-5-1/4-3-3 of some description and having him as a wide forward. Some would even say he's better wide, it's a bit of a debate really.

Excellent summary
He dribbles a lot and the opposition dont like it - you can see it all over their faces. (Ron Atkinson)

Excellent analysis of the situation Jaza.
I've always liked Kwasnik playing on the left, or even on the right cutting in, but as an out and out forward upfront with Smeltz he could be ideal.

great signing, and if daniel gets injured for the season he can fill left side mid field
I have an amazing ability to find my way out of mazes. I'm pathological.

The one thing I will say is that IMO he really grew and performed in the HAL when in Season Two he was placed out wide (first on the right, then on the left - either way is fine as he's pretty much two-footed). The main reason is that with the burden taken away from him having to score goals he played a lot more carefree, didn't seem to feel the pressure so much and it helped him perform. At that time, any time he was up front and there was pressure for goals, he seemed to fail.

But it's now 2yrs later and he's going to be back in that position where he's expected to score. There is a chance the pressure could hurt him again and he could flop. There's also the hope that he's 2yrs older, has a lot more games (and goals) under his belt and won't feel it as much. It's hard to tell.

Interestingly enough, it leaves cap room for another solid player. With the money that was set aside for Porter - the Nix could easily get Kwasnik + someone else.

does seem to be very strange that all these outlets have one off stories that get pulled quickly, maybe they thought the deal was done and now theyre encountering some last minute glitches

Says he is contracted till the end of June so I would imagine he wont be able to sign until July? Probably why it hasn't been anounced.

the bit the seem to have changed from the original is "agreed to terms with the Phoenix ."

from memory the first version said "has signed with the Phoenix".

I'll whack the link up (while it's still there )
