I'm not in this to support a squad with only two New Zealanders, if I wanted that I'd have said keep the Knights on.
Dai,
Both clubs success is funded by the Club World Cup and if they played in Australia they wouldn't be allowed to compete in the CWC and the O-League anymore.
Not sure it would be viable... also they would have to play out of Mt. Smart as Kiwitea is never going to meet requirements, as good as the Steak Sandwiches are.
Also, no one in Australia can see how this is viable even in the next ten years.

But HN, would you rather support a Phoenix side with 2 NZers or no Nix side at all?

What about dual citizenship?
Look at Shane Smeltz, now playing as an australian for the Gold Coast and also for the All Whites.
Just a thought.
If he played for us then that'd be fine... can you name any others? If you're residing in NZ you can't get, or become eligible for, dual citizenship - even if you work for an Aussie business (as the Nix would be).
But if there were 10-12-15-20 people with dual citizenship all willing, capable, and able (subject to agreeing contracts) to play for us then that would be a brilliant idea.
I think the interesting point is that NZers and Aussies have the automatic right to work in each others country without a visa (unless they have certain criminal convictions), by asking the FFA to restrict the amount of NZers in teams are they actually asking them to break the law of the land?
Is there a case at the moment in Europe - where UEFA's 3 foreigner rule is being contested under the EU right to work legislation?
When Hibs, went up, to win the Scottish Cup - I wisnae there - furfuxake!

It would need some serious thought. I'm an All Whites fan before any club side and what the Phoenix would add to NZ football would be hard to spot without kiwi's involved.
They would be no different to any other A-League side except they would play nearer home, I may as well support the Mariners but I'd struggle to have the emotional attachment I have for them now.

I can't see it becoming viable until such time as you-know-what happens... if that's the case, otherwise you have the fundamental point that the Confederation does not WANT us in their competition. Unless that changes for some reason, then I'd assume we'll be out (relocated to Aus with a couple of games poss played here - pointless).
If I'd wanted to support Aussie's I'd have stayed there

Surely we could have 'head office' based in Oz whilst actually being based in Wellington. IRD might try do the club for tax evasion though.
HN I totally agree to being AW fan first and foremost, but I'd still have the passion for Nix. I've never supported a club side before now, Knights and Kingz included.

Just a question.
Anyone watch the ACFC match against the African champs. Was that standard, A lesser than, B equal or C better than the A League.
If it was either B or C then why should we care if we play in Aussie.
The standard is not so bad here.
So just turn up and watch local football.
7000 to 8000 a game, problem solved.
Everyone is a winner.
And HappyTed was right.
PS I don't go and watch Auckland play any more, since they moved to playing Sunday's, I work then, shift starts at 2pm.

The other thing here is that I really think this is a RACIST issue.
The fact is, the Asian countries don't want any more WHITE boys playing in their competition.
What other reason can there be for such vehement opposition to such a small insignificant number of players competing.
It ain't the quality or style of football.

The concept of moving the Nix across the Tasman is dependent on someone stumping up with the money. What's in it for Terry? It's his money we're talking about?

I'm afraid the AFC has the FFA by the 'short and curlies' as the FFA needs AFC support for the Australian WC hosting bid in either 2018 and 2022. The FFA can't just tell the AFC to FA (so to speak).
It's been suggested that we appeal to FIFA. Only possible if we have the backing of the FFA. (See above 'short and curlies' comment.)
The threat of interference by the AFC has always been on the horizon.
Does that explain why the FFA has taken so long to consider the request by the Nix for a long-term contract?
Is the simplest solution for the FFA to simply ditch the Nix and let our current A-League contract lapse, thereby saving itself a lot of headaches? What would you push for if you were an FFA executive?
(Don't know how the AFC will feel about the FIFA proposal for the AWs path to future WCs to be through involvement in an Asian group. But that's for another forum.)

hopefully this is just a really early April fools joke.
is it not possible to just say "stick your ACL spot up your arse Bin Hamman" and we just carry on as we are now.
sorry if that is a stupid question I haven't read the article properly because it is really confusing.

This is heartbreaking. I know that it isn't done and dusted, but Asia have never wanted us - ever.
The Phoenix look like that they are going to die before they have just begun. Everything this club has done for football in New Zealand and Australia seems to be ignored.
I'm not angry. Just very, very sad.

i think we did a big win tonight to lift the spirits. The boys need to be told our situation up front and tell them that all we can do at the moment is enhance the game in this part of the world the best way we can, and thats by winning and drawing big crowds.
Would love for us to surge up the table and qualify for the ACL. And then tell them to shove it and don't even bother with it

I quite like Duncan JOhnstone's writing ...
The final point ... Otherwise, Wellington Phoenix FC should belong to the second division of the A-League, which should be newly created by the Australian body.
As a positive, I think we should / would / could clean up in that division although it would not be as exciting as the top flight we are in now and Terry might wonder if its worth continuing to bank roll ...

We'd win 2nd division and not be allowed to top flight

if we went into the 2nd division and won it would we be allowed to be promoted?

I would very much doubt it. He's not an idiot. I'd be surprised if it got the same amount of exposure, in the media etc, as the 1st Division would. He's already losing money in the A League as it is, how much more would he lose if we were in the 2nd Division?
If it happened, and we dropped to a 2nd division, I'd imagine there would be big changes. Not playing at the ROF might well be one of them.

An excerpt from this:
Wellington officials could not be reached for comment on Thursday night, but an FFA spokeswoman said: "We're very encouraged by indications from the AFC regarding Wellington Phoenix's eligibility for the ACL. But there are some issues we need to follow up with them for clarification."
'Issues for clarification'.. Not sure how I read FFA's comments here, but you could suppose that they might go into bat for us a bit..

Simple solution: John Key and Kevin Rudd create a workaround that,
for the purposes of football only,
NZers eligible to play for Wellington Phoenix and any subsequent NZ based A League clubs will be legitimately classed as dual citizens of both countries, entitled to the rights and privileges of citizens of both countries.
Imo,
Any political or commercial restraint-of-trade interference by the AFC on the lawful conducting of business between NZ and Australian citizens and entities is overstepping their jurisdiction.
