MEDIA RELEASE

For immediate release

PHOENIX SIGN SPANISH MIDFIELDER

Wellington Phoenix’ visit to Auckland has paid dividends despite suffering a 1-0 loss to Auckland City with head coach Ernie Merrick confirming today he has signed City’s midfielder Albert Riera on a one-year contract.

While Merrick was assessing the prospects of trialists in his own team that day, he was particularly impressed with the display of 29-year-old Riera and invited the Spaniard to Wellington for a trial.

It didn’t take long for Merrick to decide that Riera was just the type of player he was looking for to add depth and experience to his midfield.

“Albert really stood up in that game and signing him gives us cover in midfield which is vital,” Merrick said.

“He is a ball winner and his passing is first class. He rarely gives the ball away and he will bring composure and on-field maturity to an important position.

“I had been looking for someone like Albert for a while because the modern game puts high physical demands on players, especially in midfield.

“On top of that we face some challenges other A-League clubs don’t have in that we often lose our All Whites on international duty.”

Merrick said the Spaniard’s arrival showed that the club had benefitted from taking pre-season games out of Wellington.

“Playing in Auckland, as well taking on the All Whites in Rotorua, gave me an opportunity to look at suitable players in a competitive situation,” he said.

“I’d heard about Albert but it was important to see him in a real game situation rather than a training situation in Wellington.”

Riera was today finding it difficult to comprehend what has happened to him over the past seven days and is determined not to waste the opportunity he has been given.

“I am still shocked because it has all happened so quickly,” Riera said.

“All I was focussed on was doing pre-season with Auckland to get myself fit for the coming season.

“When I spoke to Ernie and got to training I understood what he wants from me and I want the same things. I like the way he wants to play and know I can fit in with the team.

“Playing on Sunday (in an intra- squad game) in that fantastic stadium was great and I am going to enjoy Wellington.”

Ironically when Riera arrived in Auckland almost three years ago the last thing on his mind was playing football, especially not for a living.

“In Spain I was a paramedic and played semi-professional football,” he said.

“It was hard work fitting in my job and training and it got to the point where I felt I needed a break. I decided to take a year off and do some travelling with friends.

“That was how I ended up in Auckland and now I am a professional footballer! How good is that?”

This smacks of a Ricki signing for me. Bit disappointing. Why would we not sign Thompson if we are willing to sign this guy? Makes no sense.

Was just asking this on twitter but might as well put it to thread.

Does this mean Merrick sees Riera as a starting XI player? He was pretty clear early on that was the only thing import slots should be used for.

So is Lia shit out of luck in terms of a starting spot now? Manny? Or have we just used an import slot on cover?

I think he looks good from what little I have seen him play but thought the international status meant he was going to be out of luck.

a couple of years and he will be ready for the all-whites, that's how we do things now, right?

How will the Auckland City coach feel about this..? I think I heard somewhere that he won the ACFC player of the season last year as well as the O-league player of the season? Can't be good for their club world cup preparations. Will hold my judgments on Riera until I've seen him play a bit more but from I've seen, he seems like a useful player. Agile, quick and a good passer. Technically good too. I think Ernie is right when he says that he fits the modern game.

City will be happy to see a player move to professional football.

Every chance Ramon will find another Spaniard to replace him.

Have really enjoyed watching Albert at City the last couple of seasons. Tireless worker, reads the game well and has good anticipation. Will be a big loss but hope he goes well and starts for the Phoenix.

Yeah... When we signed Totori it seemed like Ricki just said "What we gotten beaten by underdogs? Sign their best player, He'll be quality right?"
Ernie seems to have done the same thing. Seems like Thompson would have been better, maybe he was asking for too much.

Diff between Riera and Thomson is that Thomson wanted to be a box to box attack-minded midfielder, but Ernie wanted a man to sit and hold and distribute. Different job.

I'm still unconvinced that Ernie will put him straight into the starting XI this week. Doesn't really fit his style imo, but I would be very happy to be proven wrong. But eventually he'll force his way in front of Lia (I say by round 3) and then Lia will struggle for a start barring injuries/suspensions.

That's pretty much exactly my thoughts.

Of course he fits Ernie's style, why else would Ernie sign him? He would be the right price too, I'd think. I've seen him play at ACFC and he was the best player on the pitch, has every chance to be a good signing for us.

I was impressed by him on Sunday, very good distribution and range of passing. Looked comfortable with the ball, even under the pressure, so pretty much the anti-Lia. Happy to give him a chance.

Interesting how the worst thing anyone's said about Ernie so far is "he's just done something Ricki would have done!!!" Which is a bit nasty on our founding coach who had 4 pretty good seasons and a crap one.

This. With the season starting in 6 days it was time to get a bit more realistic about our prospects of signing a gun european player.

Sorry, was a bit unclear. Didn't mean that Riera doesn't fit Ernie's playing style, meant that chucking him into the starting XI straight away after bedding Lia + Muscat in all off-season and going on the record to say he was happy with them, doesn't seem to be Ernie's style of doing things. He seems a bit more methodical than that, so I expect him to take some time (hopefully not too long) to work him into the team.
That's just a hunch though. I guess we'll find out on Sunday.

Well I am record as saying that I would not have signed him as a DM. I think as a LB then that's ok. However now he is one of us, I hope he proves me wrong. It would be great to have a player that is successful in that DM role (even if I can't see it myself)

All we can do is watch it unfold.
