No they are big shoes, just everyone wearing them has small feet.

Big shoes to fill, small feet to replace.

2 small left feet!

As I see it he has only 12 months until he can apply for citizenship as he's already been here for 3 years? (someone please correct me here if I am wrong) Therefore if he turns out to be a little gem like I am hoping having never seen him play, then we can offer a longer term contract from next season and potentially have him as a "Kiwi".

Sounds like he fits the bill for Ernie and he has won 2 League titles so I am going to trust him!

Of course he fits Ernie's style, why else would Ernie sign him? He would be the right price too, I'd think. I've seen him play at ACFC and he was the best player on the pitch, has every chance to be a good signing for us.

Sorry, was a bit unclear. Didn't mean that Riera doesn't fit Ernie's playing style, meant that chucking him into the starting XI straight away after bedding Lia + Muscat in all off-season and going on the record to say he was happy with them, doesn't seem to be Ernie's style of doing things. He seems a bit more methodical than that, so I expect him to take some time (hopefully not too long) to work him into the team.

That's just a hunch though. I guess we'll find out on Sunday.

Yeah but speaking poorly of players in the media doesn't seem to be Ernie's style either. As someone mentioned earlier he's hardly said a bad word about a single player since he got here, and surely he doesn't think they're all top quality.

pleased we've (Ernie) has made a decision around the DM position, this puts massive pressure on Lia - frankly I don't think he needed any pressure to lose his spot in the starting lineup - he hasn't exactly done a lot to secure it of late. Reira v Thompson is cleary a moot point, Thompson wanted to be more attacking and was probably more costly than we wanted to pay, Bertsch had the youth thing against him given Ernie wanted exprience and Reira offers that, plus in 12 months he becomes a kiwi freeing up that import spot.

Everyone knows Ernie is contract tied as to how he develops his squad.

Let's support him. Someone did a great job in orklund in closing down the Nix.

Credit due.

really pleased with the signing, it is a slight blow for Bertch but I think despite being unproven at a-league level, Riera will offer some experience and maturity and even leadership. Also Riera has been in the country 2-3 years so he would've adapted to the kiwi way of life by now and is hopefully settled unlike some other import options.

Very happy with this signing because

1, He has a better skill set than Lia and will enhance our midfield play

2, Mature player ....tough on Bertsh but his time will come

3, Is a low risk import.....already been living in NZ and settled in our culture/language

4, Ernie likes what he brings and in Ernie we trust

Without over blowing this Reira could be that little cog that makes the whole machine work. I was seriously worried that Ernies game plan was not going to work because we were lacking that vital DM. If Reira can make a success of winning the ball, holding it under pressure and distributing it well then we are looking good. Look what Flamini has done for Arsenal. A hugely underwhelming signing for the fans who has turned out to have transformed their midfield by doing the little things right.

Welcome to the Nix...hope you have a long and succesful stay

Mario Bilen will be next - if Ernie's got good eyes.

I think it is an ok signing. A fair bit better than Bertsch and Thomson imo. I still think Hicks should be signed though.

Fux sake. Maybe Gareth should make a contribution to the ACFC WCC travel fund. Just to keep things sweet.

Yeah well, El Grap has been very quiet since the Kiwitea St result. You haven't noticed?

So Tegal, you'll be happy next time you're in Dorkland to come to Kiwitea St and watch the Nix development squad?

I'm not really sure what you're getting at, so have no idea how to answer. After reports of nix fans going to the preseason game and coming away without being stabbed, I might think about it now.

From Wikipedia Catalan: "Viquipedia":

                 Albert Riera Vidal

http://translate.google.co.nz/translate?hl=en&sl=ca&u=http://ca.wikipedia.org/wiki/Albert_Riera_Vidal&prev=/search%3Fq%3DALBERT%2BRIERA%2BAUCKLAND%2BCITY%2BFC%26rlz%3D1C1AFAB_enNZ468NZ468%26es_sm%3D93

Modest playing background in Spain - Fourth-tier clubs   CF Balaguer and   FC Benavente   in the Spanish Third Div.which is really the Fourth:  "The Third Division ("Tercera División") is the fourth level of the Spanish football league system. The top three are the Primera División, often referred to as "La Liga" in English, the Segunda División, and Segunda División B. and is superior to the regional divisions...

The Tercera División currently features 361 teams divided into 18 regional groups, corresponding to the Autonomous communities of Spain"

In other words he played for one of the 361 teams in the fourth tier, in effect in a regional league....

So more comparable to non-league football in England.

NB The Spanish Third Div. (fourth tier) is not at all analogous to the fourth tier in England, League Two, which is a national league of only 24 teams.

Not to say that capable players can't come from modest leagues.

It's a good idea. We've got at least 5 physios on my Gaelic football team. (A whole bunch of Irish girls come out here to work as physios, no idea why, it's like Kiwis being bartenders in London.)

Your team could play the Christchurch Irish builders team that was on TV 3 the other nite...Nix curtain raiser!

For sure - and Adelaide are turning to Catalonia big time from staff to players - they've signed two Catalonians from Segunda Division B (the third tier in Spain) the level above the one Riera was playing at in Spain. Their club sounds like a spoof of FC Barcelona, "FC Badalona" but is actually a real club!!! See here, an excellent series of pre-season previews of A-League teams coming out one side every  day on the Guardian, UK website (amazing a UK paper has such good A-League coverage!):

"The former Barcelona youth coach Josep Gombau arrives at Hindmarsh Stadium via Hong Kong, where he performed admirably with Kitchee FC.

With him he has brought his assistant from Kitchee, Pau Martí, as well as two Catalans who weren't good enough to play for Barcelona, but managed to turn out for CF Badalona, a club in Catalonia which my sources tell me is just a crappier version of their more illustrious southern neighbours. Sergio Cirio and Isaías Sánchez add to a squad already laden with Latin types, which should bring something different to the competition."

All the previews so far with accompanying videos (Nix preview coming soon!):

Well, I already played in the first NZ Ladies' Gaelic League last year. I was second-choice keeper for Auckland, but Welly turned out without a keeper so I filled in for my native town. Auckland totally thumped us but I saved at least one goal. :)

(note: Auckland has six 15-a-side ladies' team while Welly/Hutt has two 7-a-side teams, so the gulf in quality was not unexpected. Canterbury are tougher.)

Yes, a full Gaelic squad is 15-a-side and the pitch is about 50% bigger than a rugby field. Here are some highlights.
Oh right, I missed that is was Gaelic. My bad. I went to an All-Ireland semi-final at Croke Park in Dublin a few years back. Bizarrely it was tied at full time, so they packed up and waited to play a full replay on the next Saturday.

I went to one as well, 1988 or 89 I think Cavan vs someone [wasn't a final] was amazed at the speed of the movement from hand to foot. Was all over in about an hour and everyone off to the pub... Saw Croke Park for the first time again when the All Blacks played there recently, what a transformation from when I went there....

Yeah, it was a really great game to watch. Only problem was I was sitting right in the middle of a bunch of Mayo supporters and another bunch of Fermanagh supporters and had no idea who to back. The pub before and after the game was humming though.
