Ernie moves fast. Nice signing. Cant wait to see him play in 6months time.

I have an amazing ability to find my way out of mazes. I'm pathological.

ANother youngster. From the oldest squad in the league we are fast becoming the youngest.

Who is he? What is he made of? Can he kick a ball?

We will never fully decide who has won the football.

Has he played in the ASB prem?

Our midfield is looking pretty foreign... Riera, Cunningham, Hernandez and Gorrin.

Does he have good fifa stats?

According to Newstalk ZB it's a 2 year deal with an option of a third.

Ernie rates him very highly.

Wow. That seems like a huge signing on the surface of it. Young at a Prem League club (admittedly soon to be championship), choosing second last team in A-League? Must have offered alright coin. Also wonder about attitude, as you'd expect there's a reason no one else has picked him up. But I'm happy to back Ernie's judgement and can't wait to see him play - potentially alongside Riera?

Welcome

Not sure of the reasons why you have chosen to leave the sparkling city of Sunderland and come to the glorious city of Wellington

But who cares !!

If you can solve our midfield problems, we will love you to bits xx

Sounds like a tip from a mate of Greenie's... I like the sound of it/him, and breaking the trend of older imports - this kid will (hopefully) have something to prove and want an opportunity to kick on (pun intended).

Has to be an upgrade on the current players player of the year also.

I agree with the other Smith this likely signals the end of Carlos (and possibly KC) and am ambivalent. I hope that this also means (given Ernie's noises about signing some experienced starters) he has a quality non-Visa player lined up.

I'm looking forward to seeing Alex - and also pleased to see he'll be here when pre-season starts!

Pleased to see an early definitive move. Sounds like the type of player we need as well. I am a bit surprised by the age given that he is our last import and presumably on a decent wage but optimistic.

Could be an interesting signing, I like that it is a Youth signing rather than someone who has come here to retire.

I'm an optimistic pessimist.
I'm positive things will go wrong.

Maybe he plans to retire at 23.

They are saying on 442 forum that we paid a transfer fee.

I wonder if the 1 year extension is an automatic trigger based on playing time? We might be looking at playing him for a couple of years then selling him on.

Well yes, but Wellington and the money he will get for the next two years... not much to retire on :P

if this is an indication of future signings by Ernie I'm stoked - no more old retiring imports, but young prospects who show talent. 2 years to proove himself option of a third and if he is a star then resign him for another couple and suddently we have a kiwi player who is only 25 running our midfield!

Queenslander 3x a year.

At least there won't be a language problem with those 4.

Maybe he thinks he is going to Phoenix Arizona?

It really is odd that he's signed for us.

The Sunderland fans seem to rate him, been linked to Borussia Dortmund, a bit of googling shows articles about him being close to breaking into the first team, etc.

Some quotes:

The ball-playing midfielder enjoys getting stuck in at both ends of the pitch and is renowned for his excellent attitude to the game.

and

Can pass all day long and has lovely technique, also has an eye for goal.

Really excited about this guy.

Edit the regexes or whatever to detect quoting seem to need some tweaking.

Maybe NZ citizenship is a really valuable thing...hopefully he'll be a bit of a Broich. Fingers crossed.

Quite surprised he's on his way to our shores, Looks decent from what I've seen of him and the old man who goes to most of the u21 games reckoned he was worth another contract although still a little lightweight for the first team.

Not surprised hes leaving SAFC, big clearout on the way up there but wouldn't expect to many more to be persuaded by the A-League, more likely lower premierleage and championship outfits..

I'd imagine he see's it as a stepping stone to better things or a chance to get some first team experience. He's only 20. The Phoenix are maybe hoping he will shine and we may make some coin if someone comes in for him while he is under contract.

This is a weird attitude - being "surprised" that a young talented player is coming here! If you really think that only oldsters looking for an easy retirement pay-cheque would want to play for the Nix, then screw any chance of us ever winning the league!

Most people have come to terms with what types of players the Phoenix can be expected to recruit Daloras and this guy sits somewhat outside that bracket so they think they can smell a rat. Or are at least entertaining the future chance of disappointment. This is the YF forum afterall

Fuck this stupid game

We get plenty of people from Europe come to our office on secondment, they are all in their early twenties and come for a year or two. It's a regular thing in our company - about half end up staying - but it all starts short term, for people in the northern hemisphere NZ is an exotic mystical place that visiting is a once in a life time opportunity.

You hop on an Air NZ flight from anywhere north of the equator and people are gushing with their expectations for a visit to our shores.

Who says that this kid isn't actually sick of struggling to break into the main team and thinks comes to the other side of the world, get some first team experience, a highlight real, make some dosh, and also get to go somewhere a bit different?

Maybe he's just a crazy LOTR fan?

I suppose the difference is, people who go to your office on secondment are not passing up on the opportunity to $5m a year to come and work for $200k.

Or maybe he is a REALLY batshit crazy LOTR fan!

I think he has already represented Spain at youth level (from memory).
