Good call on getting Smith for the rest of the season. Balls in his court now to prove he warrants signing for next season as well.
With only four import slots next season and Ifill and Sanchez taking two...if Smith takes the third  that leaves only one for next season.....which does not leave much scope for significantly strenghtening the team.

He is quoted as saying negotiations are underway for him to stay next season too!

This is a huge call with one less import slot, writing on the wall for Warner

We will habe Ifill, Sanchez, Greenacre and Smith as foreigners if this goes ahead..............

Great decision to keep him for next season, imo opinion he will have to improve a bit to show that he deserves a contract extension but at this stage I think he's worth his spot.

Only signed for rest of this season. Smith would like to stay for next so I guess he has rest of year to prove himself worthy of import spot, but all things considered, think it is good to have him for rest of year

Sorry, meant to say good that we've signed him until next season, not for next season. Agree that he'll be good for the rest of this year.

I'm glad for the guy and happy he is staying. But it feels like the safe option, I think we should have gambled on signing a striker.

With 10 games left, we are 1 point off 3rd, and 4 points off 2nd. We only have 4 games left at home, so need to do this on the road and we struggle to score goals away.

How many away goals have we scored in total this season? With Smith getting one of them that must make him one of out leading away scorers!

Clutching at straws though, obviously.

Interesting that our 23 goals scored this season puts us in 4th place in terms of goals scored and the twenty conced leaves us 2nd equal with Brissy behind CCM

Sure we have not scored as many away goals as we would like but:

1) Our goals spread across many players = good thing
2) Away  goal problem is nothing new for us
3) There are very few (if any) quality strikers available at the moment that fit the bill in terms of import slot / local and $'s available.

We have scored 4 away goals, Greenacre v GCU, Brown v Roar, Smith v Victory and Brown v GCU.

Yeah I doubt we could have found anyone better without spending quite a bit. Ricki does have a better handle on this than us because he will know how much money is available and will have been in contact with any potential signings. Perhaps that was why this was left so late?

Smith has been pretty good, most of the time (last week excepted) we only play one striker and already have two imports for that slot. We have needed Smith in midfield several times and he has done fairly well. I guess if Lindsay really was ready to start we could have offloaded Smith but I can't say as have never really seen him play. And we could still bring in Killen of course. I'm happy with this re-signing.

2011   W 1    D 2  F 4     A 9     Diff -5
2010       2       2     7     23          -16
2009       3       5     6     12           -6
2008       2       1     8     21          -13
2007       3            10     23          -13

Thats our away record since  2007. Overall this year not too disimilar to best year when look at Goal Differnce, so that is possibly a reflection of a more defensive mindset when away.

Undutedly everyone would love to see more away goals, but at least we seem to have sorted out leaks at the back.

My whole point is however that there is not really anyone around that will bang goals in for us that is available and that we can afford.

Apparently Sanchez wants to go to a club that knows how to use an attacking midfielder properly.

The MAJOR PLAYER ANNOUNCEMENT didn't really phase me.

I'm not convinced he is a 'first name picked' to be a starter and thus he would need to show more to prove that, and to get an import spot next year.

We should be treating next years import slots like gold and at the moment, based on current form, do not think he warrants one for next year. Forward thinking suggests if he signs for next year and the Phoenix want a gun striker then both Warner and Greenacre are gone. Guess he has the rest of the season to prove that.

warner likely to be gne next year for some younger aussie keeper, Greenie will prabably not be on the roster, retire and stay on as a coach.

Has there even been a hint of an official word about this? I know it seems likely, especially given Greenie's player/coach role this season, but has he or the nix actually said anything? All I've heard is speculation.

This place is built on speculation. It's what we do.

There's been nothing official anywhere, afaik,  about Greenie retiring after this season

Apparently I'm apathetic, but I couldn't care less.

Unless we can sign anyone better, I would be happy enough for Greenie to stay another year. His fitness, professionalism and never say die attirude can not be faulted and so far this year, has avoided any injury of note. Sure he is not getting any quicker but his experience counts for a hell of a lot.

I don't see why people mention money as a problem when they talk about signing players/imports. With 20 players we must be miles under the salary cap and looking at the other clubs rosters and comparing it to ours in my opinion our wage bill would be the lowest in the league. We also have all the marque spots left. The money is there at gareths end and rather then donating it to charity I wouldn't mind him investing it into the phoenix AucklandPhoenix2012-01-19 19:39:08
